This is great for a one or two night stay. Cozy room that is clean. There are hand towels and bath towels provided along with the basic lotion, soap, shampoo and conditioner. The room is older and provides heavy blankets for warmth. There is a river outside so if you don't like the sound this may not be the room for you. It was an amazing view for me. Also there is Wi-Fi. Most television channels are in Spanish. The staff was pleasant and held our luggage during our trek to Manchu.

The hotel has wonderful views from the rooms facing the Urubamaba River with comfortable beds, however the room I was in had no Wi-Fi coverage except in the corner nearest the door.
The room was also quite noisy from early in the morning due to the buses departing for Machu Picchu from 6am onwards.
Breakfast was generous and the staff were friendly and helpful.

We stayed here for one night as part of a tour with Overseas Adventure Travel, so we didn't have to do all the normal research to find the place, check in, pay for the room directly, and related stuff. With that caveat, we found the neighborhood where the hotel is situated to have a bunch of stores, restaurants and other commercial properties. Hard to say if it was safe at night and during the day, though no one in our party had any issues. When we arrived during the evening, the walk to the hotel was rather spooky, as the street lights were out and the street was not in the best of condition. Regardless, our tour guide assured us that the hotel was safe and in a safe neighborhood. The area is also host to several good restaurants, one of which we ate supper at. That restaurant, Inkawasi, is the subject of another review. The hotel is situated right across a narrow road from the Urubamba River, and you can hear the water rushing along as soon as you step out of the lobby. Very scenic and very rugged. The hotel was clean and the staff very helpful. They even loaned my wife a hair dryer when hers wouldn't work. The room came with three, yes three, double beds. Two of them were very comfortable. No noise to speak of, other than the rush of the river, and we got a great nights sleep. The breakfast that was served was very good with an assortment of hot and cold items. This isn't a fancy place, but it is clean, well kept and a nice place to lay your head for a night or two. We would come here again if we ever return.

We booked this hotel last minute and were very happy with the hotel. We had a large room with a private balcony overlooking the river. The river was very noisy but I guess this is the same for all hotels next to the river. The distance to the center of town is 10 minutes and we had great views from our room. Breakfast is simple but good and the best thing is that upon returning from Machu Picchu the bus dropped us at the entrance of the hotel. No more walking back from the bus station!

My experience at Hotel Santuario was excellent. I had a shower the first night and the following afternoon after I did my hike to Machu Picchu. The hot water worked fine both times. I had a room with two beds. The spacing in the room was fine. It was chilly the two nights I was in Aguas Calientes but the bed sheets and blankets kept me warm. There is an elevator at this hotel. The wifi at the hotel worked excellent. The continental breakfast consisted of eggs, sausage, sliced ham, another sliced meat (I didn't ask the name), pineapples, papaya, watermelon, avocado, brocolli, croissant, sesame bread, and a few other items. The view from my room was amazing. I could see the river and the mountains. The lobby gives you a good view as well. The river had a relaxing sound to it that made me fall asleep easy at night. The hotel is clean. The staff is polite and professional. The receptionist had put me in contact with a tour guide for Machu Picchu named Eddy. Eddy did a fantastic job. This hotel is off the main strip so it is very quiet. If you plan to walk/hike to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes this hotel is near the starting point for that.

We enjoyed this place! Great views and nice sound of the river overnight. Staff was very helpful. Room comfortable, large, and with a good shower. Breakfast was a bit limited. The hotel itself is one of the furthest from the train station but still very walkable.

We stayed here for one night. We got a 2nd floor room with a small balcony (although there is another door from the hallway that led to the balcony and to our room. Our room also had a door leading to the balcony). At first I thought it was great to have a balcony looking over the the river, but then noticed that the lock to the balcony door leading from our room can be easily unlocked from the outside if you moved the door back and forth. Also since our room was close to ground level of the hotel, the bathroom window was located so that anyone from the outside can probably break in to our room. We did not feel safe. the room smelled musty, there were some stains on the carpet and the lighting wasn't that great. It made the room feel dark. There was also the issue of the bathroom shower door not shutting and it fell off while I was taking a shower b/c the door hinges were broken off from the shower wall. The only good thing about the room is the bed - which was a double, but adequate.

My husband and I are seasoned travellers and we've stayed in many hostels and small cheap hotels and motels all over the world. we've seen hotel/motel rooms similar to this hotel, but in better condition than the one we stayed in. Maybe it was just our room that had these issues, but I am sure other guests complained about this, but nothing was done to correct these issues to make the guests feel comfortable and safe.

We had a lovely stay at this property in June of 2008. After much research and questioning of folks who had visited the area we decided that staying in AC was the best plan for us. The Santuario was our choice and we have no regrets. I spent most of an afternoon wandering around this empoverished town looking at the other hotels and feel we chose well when comparing locations.

Located on the edge of town (actually on the road to MP) there is a bit of a climb to get into the commercial restaurant, shopping, etc. district, but it's certainly not insurmountable. It was at most a 15 minute walk downhill from the new train station. Maybe a 10 minute walk (also downhill) from the MP bus station. Both judged at a strolling pace!

The room was perfectly nice and very clean. Two twin beds meant we didn't have to fight over covers for two nights. Loved having a balcony overlooking the river as a place to hang out. Wasn't so crazy about third floor and no elevator. The breakfast was also adequate, but not anything to write home about. I enjoyed the fresh eggs cooked to order, but found their coffee to be a different story. So we just helped ourselves to the coca tea and moved along.

The porters were most helpful meeting us at the train station and carrying our luggage to the hotel and all the way up to the 3rd floor. On departure they were equally helpful in getting us back up to the train and making sure we were at the correct station as well.

Opinions are like "you-knows" - everybody has one. I've already suggested this property to several friends along the way. It's AC gang. Where all freight moves by human muscle power. Where people live in houses with plastic roofs and missing outer walls. There are no 5 Star hotels in these parts, yet. If you want to spend a lot of money and be right at the gates of MP for the sunrise, then fork it out and stay up there. But if you want to spend some time in a lovely town filled with optomistic people and sleep in a relatively nice place, this is one to visit.

Aguas Calientes reminded me of a cross between Patpong in Bangkok and the archetypal Wild West town so as far as I'm concerned the biggest advantage of this hotel is that it's out of town (albeit just a couple of hundred yards) and so away from the noise and bustle. It's still convenient for both the railway and bus stations and you won't have far to walk, provided you can avoid the dirt and potholes of the dirt track that passes as the main street in front of the hotel - another reminder of the wild west.
Hotel has all the basics - cleanish rooms, reasonable breakfast served from 5am, which enables you to eat and then get out in time for the first bus to Machu Picchu. Try to get a room on the top floor, with a balcony although you probably won't be spending much time in your room. Only downside which I don't believe any reviewer has mentioned is that the beds are small - a "double" room has a standard double bed 4' 6" wide.
wifi only works in the lobby - and then not very well.

After spending a magical day at machu piccu, a nice afternoon massage and dinner at a fabulous restaurant with pur friends we all returned to our hotel tired and ready for a hot shower!! To my disbelief the water was cold and the room is very loud with the trains and river across the road! Not a happy camper!! Very disappointed with jetset for booking us into such a dump. On the bright side... The wifi works! Would not recommend this to anyone unless you are backpacking , but not backpacker rates!!!

The train station is outside of the local crafts market. You have to traverse across the market to get to town. The town is on one side of the river, the train station and the market on the other. The main bus station is on the town side of the river just across the river. The hotel is on the main road going up to Machu Piichu. The concept of "blocks" is not quite correct as the town is very narrow and not laid out in blocks. But distance wise, the hotel is probably a couple of blocks from the bus stop. I cannot speak for the hotel, but when we were there they were very accommodating. When we checked out we had an afternoon train and they stored our luggage from our morning checkout until we left. I would expect them to hold it until you returned to check in. It is a short walk from the train station to the hotel and the only difficulty would be the road and construction. There are some sidewalks, but some were closed for construction. We traveled quite lite so it was no problem for us. Then it is a short walk back up to the main buss station. It is easy to find since it is right on the street, is marked by a sign, and generally a line of people waiting to go up the mountain. I think the schedule was for a bus every thirty minutes, but they leave as fast as they are loaded. We usually had to wait one bus. Buy some bottled water in town before you go up. There is no eating in the ruin, but your ticket is good for reentry so you can exit and get something to eat and then re enter. There is an expensive place to eat up there plus a snack shop. We bought a sandwich down in town and then carried it and ate it up there, outside of course. Your plan is very feasible. We also spent two days there. I really enjoyed the hotel, Machu Picchu, and the town. I am sure you will enjoy yourself.
