We booked Hotel Retama for the night before we went to Machu Picchu. A day or two before our stay, Viviana reached out via email to verify our arrival time in Aguas Callientes(Machu Picchu Pueblo). When we arrived at the train station, there was a gentleman waiting with a sign with our names on it. We followed him up the main street to the hotel.

Viviana checked us in and discussed our plans for Machu Picchu. We had booked via Hotels.com and there were no issues with our reservation. We had not booked a guide yet, nor had we purchased the bus tickets for Machu Picchu. Viviana was able to book a guide for us (Hamilton) as well as purchase bus tickets ($24 per person round trip). She advised that normally a private guide for two people would run $50 - $75, but due the greatly reduced number of tourists, we were offered a lower price. We took it. She offered to purchase tickets for Machu Picchu as well, but we had already purchased our Machu Picchu entrance tickets online.

We were planning on booking a guide outside of Machu Picchu but we are glad we did not wait as I did not see any guides available outside the gates at MP (we did see some later in the day near the bus lines in Aquas Callientes). We were also glad to have booked Hamilton as he told us that they were not enforcing the entrance times (our tickets stated that we needed to enter by 7am) and that the buses had little to no queue. Given this information and the possibility of fog during the early morning, we changed our plans to get up at 4am to get to MP by 7 and had a bit of a sleep in and get to MP around 8am. Our Machu Picchu trip went off without a hitch.

Hotel Retama has a very early (11am) check in time, but an equally early (9am) checkout time. We asked to leave luggage at the hotel while we were at Machu Picchu as we would not be back by 9am. Viviana graciously offered us a late checkout, so we were able to leave luggage in our room and take showers and change after we returned from MP. We returned to the hotel around noon after our MP trip. We checked out around 12:20 pm.

The room was great. The bathroom is a bit small, but was never a problem. The bed is large and comfortable. There is an armoire with a safe in the room. Our 3rd floor room overlooked the river and windows can be opened to let in the river sounds.

We were provided breakfast (coffee, fruit, pastries, bread, and eggs). Breakfast was great, especially the coffee. Wifi was strong and fast(fast being relative in the Andes).

Our quick stay was amazing. The hotel is wonderful and Viviana made our stay and Machu Picchu trip outstanding.

We stayed there on our visit to Machu Picchu. Rooms are very nice and clean, with friendly staff who went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. They prepared a take-out breakfast for our 5am departure to Machu Picchu, stored our luggage and provided mosquito repellent, advice on laundry and small gifts. A great hotel and highly recommended!

I was traveling with a group of 15 people and were greeted at the train station by a staff member from the hotel, who was personable and friendly. He spoke English fairly well, too. He escorted us to the hotel. Rooms were generally small, but efficient and attractively decorated. Everything was clean, too. The only negatives were that shower stall (all tile) had no bathmat, so I almost fell in the shower, twice. I loved the sound of the river flowing by, but at night time, my bed felt damp, and I was cold. There were no extra blankets in the room. There is no elevator, just a spiral staircase. Those that had rooms on the 4th floor, had quite a haul upwards with their luggage. The breakfast was very nice with freshly cut fruit and made to order eggs. Breakfast started at 5:00 AM so we could be to the busses by 5:30 and at Machu Picchu by 6:00 AM. The staff was friendly and accommodating, allowing us to stow most of our gear until noon when we returned from MP.

Our daughter booked us a room here for the night before ascending to the sundial. A short walk to the buses that take you to the ruins. What a great location next to the river. Awesome white noise for a good night's sleep. The shower was warm. You just need to let it warm up. The staff was so friendly and accomodating. They met us at out train to lead up up to the hotel. When there was a downpour, they had umbrellas for us to use. Breakfast was excellent with eggs cooked to order. They stored our bags after check-out so we could make our trip up to the ruins unencumbered. What a jewal of a hotel. Highly Reccomended!

We booked 3 rooms for my family at the Retamas hotel and we loved our stay. The bed were very comfortable, there was plenty of hot water and the rooms had great drapes to black out any light and allow for a great night's rest. The river flows right outside the hotel which I loved and found very soothing but my sister for example found it a bit noisy so, if that's a concern, I would recommend requesting a room on the other side to cut down the noise a little bit. The breakfast options were great, we had everything from scrambled eggs to fresh fruit juice that was just made, etc. The staff are also very helpful and accommodating and go above and beyond to help out; for example, we ended up having a slight issue with our reservation but they did their best to fix it right away and we all ultimately really, really enjoyed our stay at the Retamas. The hotel itself has a lovely ambiance as it's in a corner with plenty of trees and greenery around but the upper parts of the entrance have no windows so you find butterflies, etc flying to right outside your door and window which is just lovely. We ended up with only one night's stay but we would definitely come back for more.

This hotel really did all it could to keep us comfortable. They provided free coffee, carried out luggage and allowed us to store our luggage while we visited Machu Pichu. The beds were very cozy, the rooms clean, and the lulling sound of the nearby river gave us incredibly sound sleep. I can’t recommend this place enough.

Conveniently located near the bus and train stations, Hotel Retama was a lovely oasis on my overnight stop before heading to Machu Picchu. The bed was comfortable and the hot shower hit the spot after a long day of travel. The sounds of the river running by just outside the window was the perfect soundtrack to a solid night’s sleep.

The rooms at Retama were very comfortable, and the shower was great. The best things about our stay here were the breakfast and the hotel staff. The breakfast was a buffet spread each morning (breads and jams, yogurts, granola, coffee and tea). The hotel staff made me fresh papaya juice and scrambled eggs each morning. The hotel staff were super friendly in general, always making sure my husband and I had what we needed.

I wanted to write this review because I really feel that the staff here, especially Herbert, went above and beyond to look after us during our stay. We were met at the station by Herbert and then a short 10 mins walk to the hotel. We were upgraded to a larger room which was also great. We got lots of advice for our tour the following morning to Machu Picchu (where to buy tickets for bus and the bus stop) which is 2 mins walk from the hotel. We left our bag at the hotel while we did our tour, all no problem and they even offered to meet us at the train station to return the bag if needed... all for free! On our return to the hotel to collect our bag, after getting soaked in the rain we were offered a room to have a hot shower and change. A really lovely place with staff that will go above and beyond. So helpful and friendly. Can not recommend enough for your tour of Machu Picchu!!
