Gringo Bill’s is not a five star hotel, but it is a cool, comfortable and unique place to stay in Machu Picchu pueblo.
We had a family room (2 adults, 2 teenagers) which had a large main room with a double and a single bed, and a cool loft with a double bed. There were no damp issues as suggested in other reviews. We stayed for 3 nights. It was very comfortable for 4 people.
The main room had a covered balcony with a great view over the town. We even saw a hummingbird from the balcony one afternoon.
Basically, the hotel snakes up the side of the mountain with rooms branching off at the various levels.
Breakfast was included in the room rate and offered a good range of fruits and toast as well as some other hot food and eggs to order.
The hotel is located close to the Plaza de Armas and many nearby restaurants as well as the bus station for Machu Picchu.
There is a small pool which we did not try as it was quite cold when we were there. There is also a jacuzzi at an extra charge (it was not filled when we were there).
The staff were pleasant and helpful.

I have mixed feelings about this place. And so a Mixed review. Check in was fine and fast. But there were apparently not
Any rooms available despite having booked well in advance. So there was a choice between a room on a lower floor with no view or we had to climb 6 steep flights of stairs (no working elevator). Which was fine, I dodo t mind climbing the steps. The hotel was built against the steep mountain. Just had to stop and rest here and there due to altitude. The main reason I booked this hotel was because it had a dipping pool and jacuzzi tub outside surrounded by plants. The photos I saw looked beautiful! But no one advised me that neither were in working order. So much for an afternoon dip or an evening soak. Finally reached the top and into the room. It was mostly clean. Generally kind of had a hostel feel to it. At this point I was annoyed that I was paying so much. But the covered balcony was enjoyable in the evening with a bottle of wine and a semi-view or the mountains. There was a heater unit for when it got cold but no AC or fan for the heat. The bad part however, was the bathroom situation. The toilet and shower were separated by the bathroom sink and that is just fine so someone can have a shower while someone uses the toilet. BUT! Both enclosures for shower and toilet were open to the room at the top. So steam from the shower added to the humidity of the room and, well, the use of the toilet requires many courtesy flushes to reduce any odors coming into the rest of the room. I really enjoyed the high water pressure though. Good for the shower. Breakfast ended early (8:30) and was “meh”. The hotel is pretty in a rustic way. It really was pretty. Just weird and I felt I paid Wat too much.

We paid for a mountain view with double bed and 2 single beds, which we were not offered. We got a choice of 1 large double bed or two single beds and looking at each room (we wanted seperate beds anyway) we chose the 2 singe beds as the room was bigger. Would be nice to get a heads up on the stairs, as we were on the 4th floor. Staff were nice but surpised he did not offer to take mine or my friends bags and help us out...check in and out was easy and simple, no problems there. The room does have a funky smell, which was not pleasant, as we stayed 2 nights and i felt really sick the 2nd day and was ready to leave this place! Breakfast was not good in my opinion, hardly any choice and didnt look fresh so I didnt eat anything - even though I had paid for it, so that was disappointing. They also tried to charge me extra for getting makeup on my pillowcase and the towels (they hadnt even bothered washing them first) so I explained it washes off and refused to pay as thought that was extremely cheeky of them to charge me for that!

We booked this hotel for 1 night. we came with our two dogs which in advance they told us they would charge 20$ each. they are very well behaved, clean and quiet chihuahuas. we agreed and it was ok, even though we still find this very expensive. the staff was very nice and let us leave our bags and dogs in a spare room while we went to machu pichu.
We had two very big issues during our stay. First they did not inform us in advance that the whole hotel is under construction and the pool and jacuzzi are used for concrete mixing. They were the whole reason we chose this hotel, we are very unhappy with that. they didn't offer us any refund and only let us know about this situation AFTER we paid for the room. At one point a bucket of concrete even poured from the roof right onto us, standing in front of the hotel. they didn't offer any help, we had to ask for a cloth to wipe the concrete from our clothes. even though they apologized we were very annoyed for our clothes are now ruined.
The other issue is that due to a power out we couldn't have our included dinner. they did not offer any solution except to wait a half hour because electricity might return. it didn't (all night long) which of course is not their fault but still we think they should have offered a solution. we had to ask about it at the end of our stay and got a refund of 10$ each.
even though the room is nice, the staff is friendly and the location good we had a really bad experience with this hotel and i am very disappointed, since it was very expensive.
other things you should know: you have to pay for drinks extra during lunch and dinner (even if you booked a full meal plan). check out is at 10 (no late check out possible) although they can store your things.

We had a wonderful night stay at this boutique hotel at the foot of Machu Picchu. The staff bent over backwards to make sure we had a box lunch at 6am for the grueling hike in Machu Picchu and held the room until we were back from a longer hike than we had anticipated. The room was charming.

The hotel is very conveniently placed just off the plaza and our balcony overlooked the plaza and has a great panoramic view. The room was comfortable and had everything we needed.

The outstanding aspect of the hotel was the service we received from Carlos and Joe who were attentive to our every need. Carlos used his contacts to circumnavigate a fully booked day to Machu Pichu and provided us with our own personal guide. I can’t thank him enough for making our visit so memorable.

Gringo Bill's is a really funky hotel in the very best location in Aguas Calientes.
Our room was very spacious and comfortable. We had a lovely balcony looking over the courtyard. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Restaurants, the bus to Machu Picchu and the train station are all very close.
The only negative was the many stairs to our room, 69, which was difficult with altitude sickness. BUT there is an elevator almost ready to start up.

Nice location right at the center of the city. Very close to restaurants.
Good service (whatever limited they have).
Breakfast is as fine - the usually once.
Room was big I was given the top floor penthouse kind. Excellent view .
I would suggest anyone here with exception if they start bar and full restaurant service.

I didn't see anything wrong with Gringo Bills. We booked a double room with an ensuite WC. The room was comfortable and clean, the shower was hot, and the staff was excellent. We even had a television. It's right in the main square and a few minutes walk to the train station and buses to Machu Picchu. I payed through Pay-Pal and didn't have any problems at all.

They serve dinner at night for I think 30 soles (for a lot of food), and it was very good. Definitely try the Quinoa soup. They also can make a bag lunch to go which was basic but filling, for 15 soles. I'd recommend Gringo Bills to anyone, as I enjoyed my stay.

I was just wondering if there's a "best season" to visit without heat or a lot of raining?

We went in October and the weather was good for trekking. Also our guide said that MP is quieter at that time of year.

Gringo Bill's was a good place for us. Clean room and bath. Don't remember any odor issue. Don't know about the VAT as our travel agency arranged and paid all our tour fees. Gringo Bill's is just a short walk from the center of Aquas Calientes where the tour buses load for the trip to Machu Picchu. There are numerous food venues, shops with souvenirs, clothing, etc. in close proximity. The train station is fairly close as well.
