Grand Budapest Hotel, ah, I mean Helga's Folly is spectacular. Although we only planned to stay one night, we couldn't help but stay for another. This place is so special and amazing - way beyond its decorations: the staff is outstanding and the atmosphere is enchantingly unique. We are very grateful for this experience and the inspiration it gave us...

We booked a room at Helga's Folly a little by accident, because we wanted something different from basic guesthouses and impersonal resorts. The first impression was a bit strange: a narrow access road, a big red 1930s building hidden behind big trees and staff in smart red uniforms. Inside, one steps into a world of colourful paintings, beautiful antiques, strange...

Beautifully quirky and eccentric, nestling in the hills overlooking central Kandy, there is a bohemian feel to this family home which has grown into a guest house through necessity rather than choice. It is steeped in history, Gandhi stayed here, the colourful interiors are decorated with murals, gifts and objects given by former guests which add to the atmosphere. While...

The Folly is just as magical the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or even Fifth time you return than it was the previous times. This is one of those places that is unlike any other in the world. The atmosphere, perched up on the hillside in Kandy, is second to none. We didn't stay, but would have really enjoyed the experience. What we did get, was a tour of the beautiful place by Helga herself who has an incredible life story. We felt like...

You'll read much about Helga's Folly, so I can only add our experiences over the two nights we stayed - it was extraordinary, relaxing, delightful, and a pleasure to feel 'looked after' in this sprawling, rambling, slightly ramshackle home. The bedroom was comfortable, if slightly dark, but the bathroom was clean and the swimming pool spotless. The monkeys woke us...
