We stayed here for 5 nights. After exploring the rest of the coast, we believe the location was one of the best locally to unwind. The beach was effectively private as we never saw anyone else on it and it was a safe beach for swimming. The architecture was simply beautiful, and the interior design unique and charming. There were...

My husband and I honeymooned here for one night and it was absolutely the most divine experience! It was an incredible oasis of calm, the sound of the waves at night was just mesmerising and the house so beautifully appointed and decorated. The staff were without fault, offering to go into town to buy us toothpaste after we'd stupidly forgotten...

This beautiful boutique hotel is named the last house since it was the last house that Geoffrey Bawa (interior architect who also did gardens) designed. His style can be seen in all the area's and rooms in the hotel, with al its see through area's and stunning views. The last house is located near Tangalle and lies on a spectacular...

A yearning to return after impressions of the past became a reality. This time, The Last House let our thoughts be spontaneously drawn to George Bernard Shaw’s most imaginative saying. “Ceylon is the cradle of the human race because everyone there looks an original” The Last House has given loftier meaning to this phrase by extending it to encompass all...

We were so lucky to stay here for 8 nights and most of that time we were the only ones booked in (we were unbelievably lucky). The staff were so attentive, placing petals on our evening table, pouring our drinks, asking what we would like for dinner (Western or Sri Lankan dishes), giving us free cooking lessons and making sure...

Stayed here for two nights with my partner. The main house was occupied by a family and we had the Moonamal suite which was perfect for couples. The staff were lovely and food delicious. Was a great experience, only downside was can only swim in the beach this time of year up to waist as currents bad but that is...

This is such a charmy place that gives you the opportunity to live where a famous architect and artist lived. This reminded me Port Lligat and Gaudi House somehow. Exquisite design with pretty swimming pool , great staff and lovely cooked meals. The sorroundings are beautiful and with no masses of people. Our tip: go down the beach and you...

We were booked in to stay at this hotel and had prepaid for the accommodation through our guide who organised our itinerary. We travelled to Sri Lanka in April during the heatwave from hell with extreme temperatures. It came to our attention over a week prior to our stay that The Last House did not have any air conditioning and...

A beautiful hotel - stunning design - on a quiet bit of beach in Tangalle. Great service. Extremely well run. It is small, welcoming - an excellent and private getaway. Our room had a sweet outdoor shower. Highly recommended.

Last House is simply delightful. Although it is quite basic there is something magical and relaxing about it. You don't get disturbed but service is there if you want it. We only had 2 nights and ate at the hotel. Food was good but if you're there for longer I'd suggest eating out occasionally. The beach is a 10 second...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
It's beach and chic at this Tangalle beach villa. As Geoffrey Bawa's final example of his infamous brand of architecture throughout Sri Lanka, this six-bedroomed seaside escape enjoys space, ventilation and barefoot luxury in a private location. Decor throughout the property is largely a mix of fresh white walls and grey polished cement floors, serving as a backdrop to a mixture of antique and contemporary furniture, all adorned with bright colours. Bedrooms enjoy views of the sea or a lagoon, set in tropical gardens with a central swimming pool. Whether with family, friends or as a couple, this Tangalle Hotel - The Last House is a truly serene tropical hideaway planted beside the Indian Ocean. It can be booked in part or as a whole house, and is staffed (including a chef) to accommodate up to 14 guests. Well suited for couples and families, and situated at the end of unspoilt Mawella beach. The house is also a perfect wedding hotel in Sri Lanka. The Last House Tangalle beach hotel provides for a quintessentially seaside holiday combined with a variety of wildlife, cultural and heritage destinations to visit on the south coast. From The Last House you can visit Yala National Park to see Sri Lanka's highest concentration of Leopards, see elephants at Udawalawe Reserve or visit the Turtle Conservation Area at Rekawa. Alternatively try whale watching from Mirissa, only 45 minutes away. Or closer to home, get aboard our Fishing Boat to try your hand alongside Mawella's fishermen, dive off the boat to swim or snorkel, or just observe the Blow Hole at Kudawella from the sea. For sights nearby, take a short trip to the Mulkirigala Caves boasting a remarkable temple and monastery carved out of a large and sheer rock formation in the surrounding forest. Also nearby, fans of Bawa's architecture should visit Ruhuna University and Claughton House. There's the Dutch Fort at Matara to warm you up before a visit to Galle and its own UNESCO World Heritage Site at Galle fort, also an oasis for some browsing and shopping in its' boutiques. ... more   less
