The Last House is so-called because it was the last building designed by the great architect Geoffrey Bawa. It's down a side sandy lane, completely unsigned so that many drivers spend a lot of time trying to find it. It is beautiful but simple. Just a few rooms and no air-conditioning, so people looking for sophistication and glamour should avoid....

We stayed here for 3 nights in the ground floor room at the front. The room was fab, really big, four poster bed, lots of space and a fantastic bathroom with a second outdoor bath/shower. There wasn't aircon but we were fine with that. The peacock is seriously annoying at night! The food was excellent. Breakfast was huge with a...

We spent 4 nights here on our recent visit to Sri Lanka. It is in a very quiet spot at the end of a track in fact so quiet and unsigned that most taxi drivers have a problem finding it! Once we got there we found it to be on a lovely beach with nice beach cafes where you can...

This was the most expensive hotel (US230 ++ pn) of our Sri Lankan trip and was very poor value. Positives - * great decor in the public areas * great location on a lovely stretch of beach and we really enjoyed swimming in the sea - but it is isolated and there is nowhere else to go for a meal...

It is the last house designed by famous Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, right on the beach close to Tangalle (10min in Tuktuk). Boutique hotel of 5 amazing rooms in a beautiful house. We had the one on the first floor, with sea and pool views, the bathroom with shower and old bathtub is as big as the room and...

We had a fabulous stay here for a few nights. It is a stunning property with truly personal service and excellent food. Our room was delightful. The beach in front of the garden is a paradise..with some lovely local bars serving fresh fish for a lunch time snack. .but it is also worth turning left and exploring the beach over...

The perfect place to kick back and unwind, with great food, attentive and non-intrusive staff. While Bawa’s legacy lives on in a well-maintained house and garden which flows. Few family houses on the beach have equivalent diversity of wildlife in the garden: Langurs, iguanas, squirrels, Misha the dog, and a range of birds including sea eagles, kingfishers, peacocks and peahens,...

We arrived at the Last house as the last stop (second to last) after a tour of the Island. It's just a beautiful place. We were lucky in that the place was nearly empty so we occupied the whole of the top floor of the house. (2 adults and 2 teenage children). The house is fascinating. I loved being able...

We stayed here for 5 nights. After exploring the rest of the coast, we believe the location was one of the best locally to unwind. The beach was effectively private as we never saw anyone else on it and it was a safe beach for swimming. The architecture was simply beautiful, and the interior design unique and charming. There were...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
It's beach and chic at this Tangalle beach villa. As Geoffrey Bawa's final example of his infamous brand of architecture throughout Sri Lanka, this six-bedroomed seaside escape enjoys space, ventilation and barefoot luxury in a private location. Decor throughout the property is largely a mix of fresh white walls and grey polished cement floors, serving as a backdrop to a mixture of antique and contemporary furniture, all adorned with bright colours. Bedrooms enjoy views of the sea or a lagoon, set in tropical gardens with a central swimming pool. Whether with family, friends or as a couple, this Tangalle Hotel - The Last House is a truly serene tropical hideaway planted beside the Indian Ocean. It can be booked in part or as a whole house, and is staffed (including a chef) to accommodate up to 14 guests. Well suited for couples and families, and situated at the end of unspoilt Mawella beach. The house is also a perfect wedding hotel in Sri Lanka. The Last House Tangalle beach hotel provides for a quintessentially seaside holiday combined with a variety of wildlife, cultural and heritage destinations to visit on the south coast. From The Last House you can visit Yala National Park to see Sri Lanka's highest concentration of Leopards, see elephants at Udawalawe Reserve or visit the Turtle Conservation Area at Rekawa. Alternatively try whale watching from Mirissa, only 45 minutes away. Or closer to home, get aboard our Fishing Boat to try your hand alongside Mawella's fishermen, dive off the boat to swim or snorkel, or just observe the Blow Hole at Kudawella from the sea. For sights nearby, take a short trip to the Mulkirigala Caves boasting a remarkable temple and monastery carved out of a large and sheer rock formation in the surrounding forest. Also nearby, fans of Bawa's architecture should visit Ruhuna University and Claughton House. There's the Dutch Fort at Matara to warm you up before a visit to Galle and its own UNESCO World Heritage Site at Galle fort, also an oasis for some browsing and shopping in its' boutiques. ... more   less
