Detailed Reviews
You can either arrive by Yasawa Flyer or seaplane. Be aware the Yasawa Flyer only takes you so far, then you get picked up by the resort boat, it takes a while - extra cost and you might need seasickness pills. Arriving you are greeted by song and a hug. Wow you really feel special.
The room is really nice, you have ac, comfy bed plus tea/coffee making facilities. The bathroom required a few steps down to enter but was just fine. Yes you might get the odd gecko but that was fine.
Actually I was impressed that there were virtually no flies or mosquitoes here. There has been a lot of thought into the rooms and each has a bushy tree between the bures so it feels very private. You even get your very own chairs by the shore.
One day we were sitting on our deck and a guitarist serenaded us. Such a lovely experience.
You can do nothing, a little or a lot. There are activities but it’s entirely up to you.
The staff were amazing, from Patrick and his lovely wife, to Sarah, Appy, Caroline, Joe etc, all were just so warm and caring.
Now onto the not so great (pains me to do so)
The wifi, only in reception was very poor.
The food. Very hit / miss. Seafood was a hit. Non seafood not so good. My chicken burger was just chicken mince with a lot of stuffing/dressing. Terrible (seriously why not a small chicken fillet fried?) and filo pastry needs to be oven cooked not microwaved. It was tough and soggy.
The sea there is so clear, warm and lovely, we found mornings the best time in the water before the wind picked up later in the day.
Also everyone seemed to wear smarter clothes in the evening/for dinner.
It was a shame we had to cut our visit short by a day due to the cyclone (Sarai)

Bula & Greetings Thank you for taking the time reviewing your stay with us with kind words of encouragement and areas we need to work on, meeting the demands of all visitors to our shores. Our Resort boat picks up off Yasawa Flyer, transfers from Waya Island (Octopus) which cruises 50 minutes due west to Viwa Island. Seaplane transfer takes 30 minutes from Nadi International Airport, a beautiful colourful scenic flight with views of many uninhabited islands. Viwa Island's location is remote, the last of the Fijian Islands west of Fiji Waters. King Beds in your choice of Deluxe Air Con Beachfront Bures (45 Sqm) or Executive Air Con Beachfront Bures (65 Sqm). Being in the tropics, our friendly gecko do make an odd appearance and the breeding areas are environmental control to minimize pests. During sunset, Bati (string band) serenades between the bures inviting all guests to drinks and cocktails at the Lounge Bar. Water activities, land & cultural activities are programmed daily for the energetic or you can just sit back at the comfort of your balcony, viewing and sound of the waters lapping on to the beach or sights of the turtles popping their heads through the oceans surface. Being on a remote island, the most west of Fiji Islands, located at sea level. Our WiFi services are irregular and inconsistent. We are working with our Provider in upgrading the mast so service are consistent, faster and available throughout the resort inclusive in the Bures. Sorry our South Pacific Cuisine was not up to expectation and have note this as "constructive" for our kitchen team to digest on. The seafood are fresh from our surrounding waters, fished by the local community. All meats are freighted in from the mainland and thank you on suggesting, the alternate of "chicken fillets" in the bugger. The white sandy beach and crystal clear waters in front of the resort is a marine sanctuary which houses 23 giant clams, many species of colourful fish and turtles feeding on the the ocean floor Thank you again for posting your review and the kind words. We, the staff enjoyed the company of your stay with Best Wishes & Good Luck into 2020 Vinaka Patrick W

We flew both ways by seaplane where we saw breathtaking aerial view. I recon you to book this air transfer with the resort. If you want to connect to an international flight, make sure the flight arrives in Nadi early enough to catch up seaplane as it only runs during day time.
Good sides:
the most special souvenir from the resort for all guests (keep this in secret)
drinkable tap water
friendly staff and good services;
adult only island;
good view and good snorkeling but not great;
free charge for kayak, boat snorkeling, stand paddle and other scheduled activities (coconut demo, basket making)
Downsides:
quite costly drinks and dishes(we understood it but it was a fact);
nice presented dishes but half of them tasted ok;
it had to be guided to walk outside of the resort like the village visit (understandable but a bit surprising and disappointing);
no cellphone internet connection (wifi only available at the lounge area);
The bure was not big but provided everything that we needed. We didn’t get any trouble with insects or mosquitoes which was a surprise. As we don’t normally have big meals so we didn’t go for any meal plan. We felt breakfast, all pasta and cocktails were good but others were just ok during 7 days stay.
The snorkeling condition in front of beach was better than boat snorkeling. Other guest saw some turtles but we didn’t see any under water during snorkeling. I had two scuba dives, the site called the zoo was good.
The staff were friendly, especially Bati and Caroline and Sara. We experienced category 1 cyclone during the stay, which was quite windy half time. But the staff were trying very hard to organise more indoor activities. So we enjoyed the whole period stay. Appreciate all.
I recon to book this accommodation before comparing prices. The owner changed in 2016 if you are interested.

Bula Hannah Thank you for your review and sharing your holiday with Management & staff who all enjoyed the company of your stay. We are a private, secluded couple's resort, on a remote island, the last of the islands west of Fiji. Great view from all eleven of our beachfront bures on white sandy beach and crystal clear waters. The Deluxe Beachfront Bures are 45 sqmetres and the Executive Beachfront Bures are 65 sqmetres. Fresh water source are rain water and reverse osmosis desalination processed water. dinner menus changes nightly complimented by herbs from our organic farm, contributing to our Chef's South Pacific Cuisine. All Prices that are quoted displayed on our menus etc., are inclusive of 25% Government Taxes in Fijian Dollars. The resort sits on 4.85ha of Viwa Island, leased from the local community, home of the Land Owners. They open up their doors and sharing their traditions and cultures to visitors to our shores adding to the uniqueness of our destination. The resort provides an escort for all trips not within the resort's boundary, as a sign of respect to the local community's private areas. Being seclude, on a remote island at sea level, our communications and internet services are irregular a times. Our Providers are currently looking at upgrading our mast in providing an efficient standard of service and coverage throughout the island inclusive servings the local community. The resort's beachfront houses 23 giant clams on the farm and daily activities of turtles feeding on the seabed or surfacing the ocean surface. Daily snorkeling trips are schedule and privates snorkeling trips are organised to many of our other sites depending on tide and sea conditions. The beachfront are in front of the resort is a marine statuary, a "No Fishing Zone", in partnership with the landowning community who are the Customary Marine Resource Owners. Many Diving Sites are housed within the surrounding waters of Viwa Island and greeted by different species of sharks, dog tooth tuna,giant trevally, schools of barracuda, potato cod, Eagle Ray and colourful species of different fish, soft and hard corals. We had adverse weather conditions (tropical disturbance/depression), that developed into Cyclone Sarai, over the festive season that confined more indoor activities with strong winds and rough seas. Thank you again for your review and we wish you both "best Wishes & Good Luck into 2020. Vinaka Patrick W

We took a sea plane (Recommendable as it is a bit far from Nadi) and was a great experience, staff received us singing and was adorable, I can say the nicest staff I have meet so far! They make you feel especial.
The island is just amazing, you can swim any time, water very clear and comfortable, great snorkeling, turtles right there swimming and eating near the beach, staff take you as well out the reef and was awesome.
Food is a bit pricey (Probably as any resort), and some dishes are very nice! but you got to know what to order (Try seafood dishes, usually very good).
Got a bit sick during the trip but nothing serious for like to stop me from enjoining the day :)
Bungalows are very nice, great view, they clean it everyday and change the towels every other day. Only down is the open toilets and towels, but for me was not a deal breaker.
I would definitely comeback that's for sure!

Bula & Greetings Thank you for taking the time in reviewing your holiday with us.We the staff enjoyed the company of your stay. The seaplane is a beautiful 30 minute scenic flight west of Nadi International Airport. Viwa Island is remote, secluded island with white sandy beach and pristine crystal clear waters. Too many lovely pics to upload. Relaxing holiday atmosphere with truely friendly and supportive staff, they are a great asset to the resort. Any fish dish was delicious, other meals great, perhaps more practice required for the eggs Benedict. Staff singing and dancing spectacular, snorkeling just off the beach fabulous if u don’t want to join an organised trip ( included) and I finally saw one of the turtles just as we were leaving. Felt safe sending our youngest off on his dive with Manni. Caroline, Sarah, Api, Palu, Andie, just too many of u to name and thank. Flew in by float plane ( gorgeous) but Captain Frank performed a spectacular boat transfer to the adjacent island to catch ferry back with the encroaching cyclone. We trust u all stayed safe

Cola Vina Jo Vinaka Vakalevu for your review and sharing your holiday, experiencing our "friendly fijian hospitality". Our fish supply are fresh from the local community with meats and eggs freight in from the mainland. We have our organic herb gardens to compliment our menus and will venture into a supply of fresh eggs into 2020. Will work on getting our "Eggs Benedict" to perfection. The entertainment by the staff are exciting, lively singing, Staff Choir, Fijian & Polynesian Show, fun games and our own International Crab Race. Snorkeling can be off the beachfront from your bure with daily organised trips to many of our sites depending on tides and sea conditions. The resident turtles feed daily on the resort's beachfront seabeds on weeds and sea grapes. Dive Sites are within the surrounding waters of Viwa Island for the certified Diver and shallow sites (12m) with Dive Instructor Manny, for Discovering Scuba. The float sea plane take 30 minutes from Nadi International Airport. A scenic flight with the amazing colours of the ocean and the sight of uninhabited islands of the Yasawa Group. Thank you for your kind words. We, Staff enjoyed the company of your stay and hopefully we can met again renewing our friendship. Best Wishes & Good Luck Patrick W

We were given our time on the island as a gift from our daughter. My wife and I just recently spent 6 days/5 nights at Viwa Island Resort for our belated wedding anniversary.
After investigating the island’s location and remoteness, as well as reviews, we travelled with open minds and were not left disappointed.
Firstly, the resort staff are amongst the friendliest people we have ever met in our travels. Upon arrival at the beach, we were greeted by Sheung and a number of staff singing the welcome song.
Checking in was easy - a sit down on the verandah, with a coconut drink, taking in the necessary details.
The bures were amazing. Each new resident is treated to some local towel art work and flowers on the bed. The bure is a spacious retreat where one could sit and read or take in a nap or two on the large comfortable bed with a selection of pillows.
Air-conditioned and with sweep ceiling fans, this provided a cool retreat from the afternoon heat.
The adjacent bathroom was open to the outdoors, but well-appointed, airy and private.
The cleaning team do a great job, including a nightly turndown on the bed.
There is also a fridge and tea and coffee making gear.
Sitting on the lounges on the verandah of the Bure was a pleasure. Taking in the view, with a cool breeze and a good book, what more could you want? A massage? Sure, indulge in an hour long Fiji Massage – heaven in paradise, right on your doorstep!
This is a place to really forget the outside world, relax and unwind and lose yourself in Fiji time - no TV, no radio, limited mobile and internet connections, and best of all - NO KIDS.
The resort is nestled on the shores of a large lagoon, where the warm crystal clear waters are great for snorkelling and swimming. The grounds are as expected: palm trees, hibiscus bushes, frangipanis and other flowering trees all attracting the birdlife on the island. There is a small grove of palm trees between the bures and the beach. Some are lucky to find a large hammock for that afternoon nap.
This band of palms provides lots of shade and some protection from the strong winds that can occur.
The only “downer” was the two-hour power shutoff during the night.
Meal times were very casual. Breakfast was from a small selection of dishes and made to order.
Each meal had at least one Fijian dish and at least one with fish. The choice of two or three menu items for lunch was made at breakfast and dinner choices were made at lunch time.
Lunch was also a casual affair, with drinks available from the bar.
Pre-dinner drinks in the evening were held at the bar during happy hour, where Illy and the boys would serenade with Fijian ballads and other more well-known tunes. This was the best place to meet the other guests and get to know them.
Dinner was a little more formal, but not dressy. Male, the head chef would pop out after dinner to make sure all was OK and even occasionally join with Illy and the boys for a singsong.
After dinner, there is usually an evening activity, such as Crab Racing, Kava drinking ceremony, trivia night etc. - lots of fun.
The daily activities were listed on the board before breakfast.
Every day had something different.
The cross-island walk to the far village is an eye opener, and educational. With some traditions to be observed, it also became a cultural lesson.
The islanders are so happy, friendly, and willing to share a laugh.
The village visit was a good place to buy a few souvenirs, so take some FJD.
Snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, kayaking, handline fishing, private beach picnic, basket weaving, coconut husking, hermit crab hunting, cooking lessons, school visits and village rugby challenges were some other activities.
Most activities were led by Ba, the font of all things Fijian.
Best of all, the activities were free and optional. So you could do all, some or none.
The staff were all so friendly, with big smiles and "Bula" every time you saw them.
The new owners, Sheung and Roy, were very friendly and loved a chat. They are lucky to have such a great team!
Roy was most enthusiastic about the ideas for the resort’s upgrade in February 2015. We wish them all the best with their plans.
We travelled to and from Viwa Island Resort on the Yasawa flyer and the resort boat. Next time?
Take these travel tips.
In the morning, take the Yasawa Flyer to the island, as the sea should be calm, but arrange to catch the sea plane out in the afternoon, as the sea can get rough. That way you can see the islands from the sea level and above.
Take some books to swap or leave behind in the resort library. Feel free to take a book with you, if you have not finished reading it.
If you are feeling philanthropic, take some supplies for the school, such as pads, paper and pens. Lollies? Enough for about 80 kids.
Viwa Island Resort is truly an amazing place. The beach is beautiful, the sunsets gorgeous to behold and is the most relaxing resort we have ever been to.
We would recommend this island to anybody looking for the great escape.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive and detailed review. It was indeed a pleasure to welcome you both to Viwa Island Resort and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us. The power is currently switched off between 3.00 am and 5.00 am (when hopefully all the guests are asleep!) to enable the generator to cool down, but we are turning to solar energy as part of our renovation plans so this will not be an issue in the future. At Viwa, we are fortunate enough to be blessed with a beautiful beach and gorgeous sunsets, and we are especially lucky to have a fantastic team of staff with big bula smiles to make sure you have the most wonderful holiday. We very much hope that we shall have the pleasure of welcoming you back to Viwa in the not-too-distant future.

As to how to review this place. The staff are not happy and the undercurrents are bigger than any found out to sea. Visually Viwa is like any resort island in the Yasawa Islands, lovely but there are so many other options that don't come with all the baggage.

My partner and I arrived back this week after a 5-night getaway from work, feeling the happiest and most relaxed we’ve ever felt after a holiday, all because of the wonderful staff at Viwa Island Resort. We are delighted to highly recommend the resort to prospective travellers to Fiji. The resort has been under new management since the start of the year, so please disregard the poor reviews from pre-2015 because they no longer apply.
We chose Viwa Island because of its beautiful scenery, remoteness, and lack of technology (no TV or Wi-Fi) and children (for 16+ only). Don’t go expecting 5-star luxury because there is no dress code or day spa… which we loved! Shoes are optional (even at dinner) and the rooms are simplistic but very comfortable, adorned daily with a sprinkling of local flowers from housekeeping. An outside bathroom (shower, no bath) is attached to each bure with privacy from other guests, but do expect to co-exist with super friendly local wildlife because the outside room does open to the sky!
Each day an activities menu is written up in the main building, led by the delightful and always enthusiastic team of Ba and Vata. Activities run even if there’s just one couple interested, and they are very flexible in re-arranging the schedule depending on the vibe of the day. Activities include: hiking, snorkelling, fishing, kayaking, volleyball, village visits, weaving and cooking lessons, and diving etc. The history hike costs F$2 p.p., village visit F$4 p.p., and there are some costs associated with taking the boat out for fishing or diving, but all prices are more than reasonable.
There’s no pressure to participate so feel free to get involved when you’re interested, or do your own thing, which for us meant a lot of time in padded wooden deck-chairs on the beach (there’s a set with umbrella for each of the 11 bures). There’s also an activity each night after dinner (fire dancing, Kava drinking, trivia etc.), which is a great opportunity to socialise with other guests and staff.
All meals are served in the main building (which is a spacious covered deck overlooking the ocean), as there are no other commercial enterprises on the island. A continental breakfast each day was included in our package (cereal, toast, fruit, and beverages), but you can add a cooked breakfast for F$10 more per item (the coconut and banana flapjacks are amazing!). Otherwise the continental breakfast is F$6/item. Generally the system works for guests to pre-order lunch at breakfast, and dinner at lunch, but if you’re not hungry/still weighing up your options do let the staff know otherwise they will kindly continue to pursue you around the resort for an order.
There is a huge range of options for lunch, including: salads, sandwiches, burgers, pasta, stir-fry, and a wide variety of local fish-based dishes for approx. F$20-30 per item (with some lighter options like potato wedges for F$12). The dinner menu generally has 2 to 3 entrée (F$21-25), 3 mains (F$45-49), and 2 desserts options (~F$20), which change every night. There seems to always be a seafood option and a beef option which was nice. Do not be concerned about having only one place to eat on the island because once you’ve tried the food you wouldn’t want to eat anywhere else anyway – it is nothing short of superb! We didn't have a bad meal our entire stay, and the fresh seafood was both copious and great. We also really appreciated a romantic table on the beach for our last dinner, and loved our surprise musical interlude!
In total we spent around $800 AUD extra during our stay, which included lunches, dinners, cocktails (F$22.50 ea. or F$17.50 during happy hour) and two dives. More than fair for the quality and service that is provided.
The only downside to our stay was that the pool was unavailable due to maintenance, which would have been nice during low-tide/bad weather, but we didn’t really mind. It looks like it will be back in action soon!
The seaplane only flies during daylight hours so keep that in mind when booking international flights and accommodation (we stayed at Denarau Island our first night and caught the seaplane the next morning).
We loved our stay at Viwa Island Resort and are already dreaming of a return trip! Hopefully nothing much changes in the interim as the current set-up is pretty well perfect for those like us looking for a friendly and low-key paradise. Thank you to Sheung, Roy, Louise, and all the Viwa team for making our holiday so special, we miss you and Bula-time already!

Thank you Kerry for taking the time to write such a lovely, detailed and informative review. We loved having you and Joe stay with us, and we are delighted that you enjoyed your time here. I'm sorry that the pool wasn't quite ready when you were with us but it will be completed in the next few days. It's been a long labour of love but it will be worth it when it's finished! We really do hope that you will be back again soon to enjoy even more happy Bula times with your friends at Viwa Island Resort.

Ahhh ,Viwa Island Resort ,firstly the staff are the best I have ever experienced ,the friendliest people I have ever met.
The crystal waters the snorkelling the fishing and NO CHILDREN.
This is a place to really relax and unwind , there are only 11 Bures no mobile reception no TV's.
The accommodation is fantastic .
The resort got taken over by Cheung and Roy on the 12th of November 2014 and will be taking this resort to the next level.
A very big thank you to all ,it was THE PERFECT RESORT.
One thing I must mention , if you suffer from sea sickness I recommend take the aqua plane for half hour flight or be prepared for a 3.5-4 hour sea trip.
Chief and Mrs Chief. 4.5 out of 5

We spent days looking for a hotel in Fiji. Hotels were either (1) big, overcrowded, factory-like resorts, or (2) overly expensive. Until we found Viwa Island. The farthest island on the western front, there is only 1 hotel and 3 villages on the island, 12 bures & a restaurant. This is as isolated as it gets. With no TV and making a point of not using phones & Internet, we had the most relaxing stay. Here are some of the features of the hotel:
Lagoon - Splendid. I went to a lot of islands in my life, in the Caribbean or French Polynesia; I can honestly say i have never seen such a healthy and colourful coral and so many fishes. I truly was impressed. And you don't have to go far, 5m from the beach only. They also take you to other locations in the lagoon.
Restaurant - As food lovers, we were a bit worried about the quality of the dishes but the Chef quickly proved us wrong. We especially enjoyed the fresh fish from day. The highlight was to go hand line fishing and eat the fish we caught, simply perfect.
Bure - Calm & Comfortable, we slept so well and for so long. The bed was very comfortable and cleaning was done daily. We enjoyed seating outside on the long chairs at sunset, so relaxing.
Activities - There's a lot to do from snorkelling, kayaking to hand line fishing. There are activities in the program every day. We loved the hand line fishing with the locals. The school visit was an eye opener, this is one of the highlight of our trip. I enjoyed paddle boarding at sunset. I also brought my kitesurfing equipment and was able to do it for a few days ... Also offered are diving and fishing for those interested. If you're afraid of getting bored, don't worry there's plenty to do every day.
Music - Every night the staff plays music at dinner. We really were impressed by their performance, the singer has such a great voice it was beautiful to listen, and the staff in general is so smiley and friendly, it is a good environment to be in, good vibes.
We had such a great stay at Viwa Island, and with renovations in the way I am sure it's only going to get better. One thing is sure - We know where to go when we need space and time for ourselves, I can't think of anything better.
A big Thanks to all of the Hotel's staff and owners for making our stay such a beautiful memory.

We really appreciate your taking the time to write such a glowing and comprehensive review. It was an absolute pleasure having you and Ezzi stay with us and I was very happy to see you test out our new stand up paddle boards. I was also most impressed with your kite-boarding skills - it's not often we see kite-boarders on Viwa Island so it was fun to watch. We are all delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Viwa Island Resort and we very much hope that you will be back again soon!
