Wow, what to say. A lot of positives, a few minor negatives that I’ll mention last. The resort staff is amazingly friendly and accommodating. They mean it when they say you’re part of the family. Went out of their way to make sure everything was going well and you were enjoying you’re time. Limited people, so you’re not fighting for dinner seats or pool chairs. The Burre was fantastic. Spacious, a large sitting area and the bed room and bed was large and comfortable. Spacious bathroom, two sinks so plenty of counter space for the ladies. Double shower, as well as an outdoor shower. The AC is not going to freeze you out, but once you figure the most effective way to use the small AC, ceiling fans and widows the room is very comfortable. The AC unit is situated to blow across the bed, so it and a single sheet and you’re fine at night. The Burre is quiet, and all have a beach Burre if you want to sit and watch the waves. The meals were exceptional. Delicious, plenty of variety thru the week and the Chef takes great pride in plating. All dinners were three course (scrumptious appetizers, main course and some amazing deserts). The food was always a visual treat, as well as a treat for the palate. One warning, we’ve eaten crab legs all over, but we have never encountered crab shells as tough to break as Fiji. They say it's the water and heat. But the seafood platter they offer is excellent despite the extra work.

We have just returned from 7 days at the Yasawa Island resort and it would be impossible to say anything negative. The staff are magnificant. The food is excellent. Managment is excellent and we even had the pleasure of meeting Erin one of the owners and it is obvious that she is very passionate about the island and the people. We experienced a cyclone while we were there and the staff barely missed a beat. They very quickly had the placed prepared and kept us informed at all times about what was happening. We had to stay in our Bures for around 24 hours but they kept us well fed and watered. Nothing was too much trouble even during a cyclone. Luckily the worst of the cyclone passed to the west and damage was minimal if there was any at all. it was my wife's birthday and even whilst preparing for the cyclone, were still able to provide a cake at dinner and have the staff sing Happy Birthday. Nothing is too much trouble. The only other thing I will say is, please read about the island and it's location and other reviews before going. If you are after 5 star big hotel/resort experience it probably isn't for you. Everyone else please go and enjoy yourselves. We will be returning.

Fiji was on my bucket list for 25 years! I found Yasawa Island Resort and Spa in the Costco Travel brochure. When I read “unlimited daily picnics on a private beach,” I was almost sold. But it was my research on the resort and the reviews that solidified my choice. The owner James McCaan replies to every single review (he may have missed a few, but that’s it, a few) regardless of the comments. That shows that he’s involved, and that’s vital. With 25 years of expectations, there was a lot to live up to. Imagine my delight when the entire trip exceeded my best dreams. My stay was October 31-November 7. Dealing with Costco was smooth, and I had a good sense of comfort which made everything easier and worry-free. From the moment I landed on Yasawa Island, I knew I’d made the right choice. Stepping off the little plane, we were greeted by resort staff and adorned in a plumeria necklace. Just a few minutes later when we arrived at the resort, more staff members greeted us in song. The words were in Fijian, but everyone was clapping and smiling and swaying, so it was clearly a happy tune. Check-in was quick and thorough, but I wish I’d taken notes because I forgot a couple of things that were important later. The food at the resort was wonderful! Breakfast each day features a full menu and one awesome daily special in addition to a plate of cut fruit and pasties. Lunch and dinner each offer a first plate with two options, a main course with three options, and two dessert choices. One option each meal was vegan or vegetarian, and tho I am neither, I did opt for that selection multiple times. Portion sizes were just right, where I was neither stuffed nor still hungry after eating. The restaurant is open air and lovely. Dinner tables are set up poolside and some are located on the beach. The staff will direct you to your table at each meal, so don’t just go take any seat. I stayed in a Deluxe Bure Suite. It’s big, about 1250 square feet, with three double doors to the big deck and a door from the indoor shower to the outdoor private shower. Steps from the deck led to my hammock and covered lounge chairs and then a bit further to the beach and water, visible from the room. A small water spigot is set by the steps to clean your feet before reentering the Bure. The bedroom area (not enclosed) has an air conditioner and overhead bed lights for reading. The king sized bed was very comfortable. The living area has a comfy couch and two or three chairs plus two more day bed style couches near the front door. Even tho it was just me, I made a point to sit everywhere to get full measure! The bathroom is huge with double sinks, a closet for hanging, and closets with shelves. The shower is also very big, but I didn’t ever use it. Right outside the inside shower was an outdoor shower, and I could not force myself inside after the first shower. There was always a pitcher of water in the mini fridge. I ordered a few things for the mini-bar at check-in but the only thing I drank was the water and then used tap water. I didn’t spend enough time in the room and wished I’d not ordered anything at all. The tap water was perfect. Manasa’s Bar in the main area is wonderful. There are plenty of bar stools plus seating on couches, comfy chairs, and bar tables and chairs high and low top. I tried several different cocktails and purchased a few bottles of champagne and a bottle of wine. I did not go with the drinks package and likely spent more by not doing so, but some of the drinks are not included in the package, and I wanted full bottles of French Champagne, so I knew what was coming. Drink prices are consistent with what we pay in the US, about $13 for a craft or premium cocktail. Full bottles of wine started at about $40 and Champagne ranged from $80 to $275. They had Moet, Veuve, and Dom Perignon. Activities for the next day are scheduled at 630PM at the bar, so don’t forget to do that! We also got a daily schedule of activities as well as who arrived that day, who had to go home the next day, and special celebrations for any guests. The beach picnics are free unless you add alcohol and aren’t on the alcohol plan. The meals are light but filling and include bread, fruit, a main item, and dessert. The activities director will work with your schedule if you’re participating in multiple activities on the same day. The spa does the same, and if you can get the package, do so!! It’s about $225 and includes one treatment every single day. EVERY DAY! I had two massages, a pedicure, and some sort of coconut body thing and all of them were freaking AWESOME. There are snorkeling trips, tho you can also get fins and a mask and snorkel just off the beach. There is a trip to the Bukama village that includes the opportunity to buy handmade items from the women of the village, and you can also attend a church service at the village. You can take a walk across the island and “walk” to the lookout. That “walk” is really a vertical climb of about 300 feet or more. I still laugh. Walk. HA HA. I did a deep sea fishing trip with two other guests. The trip was two hours and was about $100. There is a trip to the Blue Lagoon Caves. That is about $15 or maybe that’s 15FJ$, and the money goes to the village that keeps it up. Ladies from that village are present to sell their handmade goods. You can request the seafood platter for dinner (dependent on successful fishing by the villagers). I think you can request a romantic oceanside dinner, but I don’t know that for sure. One night I was seated oceanside tho I didn’t request it. It was fabulous. The pool is huge and the water was a perfect temp. There is an umbrella per two lounge chairs (plenty of chairs!), and there is a hammock poolside. There is always a jar of fresh orange water which I loved! There are chairs on the beach that hang from a large tree. The breeze at the pool, bar, and restaurant was exquisite. There is a small library in the main area (it’s air conditioned) with various paperback books for you to take and replace, and there were a LOT of Stephen King books! In there you will find “the book!” It’s a picture book scrapbook style of the history of the resort, and it’s fascinating!! There is a small shop of necessities and souvenirs. The staff, every single staff member, was simply the best in every single way. They all were smiling and friendly, greeting me with a bright, “Bula!” (hello) and always saying “Vinaka!” (thank you). They whistled and sang and laughed all the time. And they were just nice. Like, really, really nice. They greeted me by name all the time, stopping to introduce themselves and ask how I was doing, where was I from. I loved it, and I loved meeting every single person I saw. I truly enjoyed meeting the guests! It was a constant rotation, but I still had the chance to visit with all of them and share meals with many of them. About half of the guests were from Australia and New Zealand, and most of the other half were from the US and Canada. I’d guess this is consistent, with a couple people from other places (Spain and China while I was there). The visitors were all really kind and it seemed there was always someone to make sure people met each other. I loved that part! I was so lucky to be on the island when the owner came to stay. She is a wonderful woman and in her telling of the story of how she and her husband came to own this resort, I was taken by the passion in her voice. Yasawa Island Resort and Spa is a labor of love, and that is patently clear as I listened to Erin regale me with history. I was at the resort to celebrate a milestone birthday, and my visit with her lent itself to one of the best celebrations I’ve ever experienced (and there have been many)! If you’ve gotten this far, I hope you will just go. Just go because it’s that good. It’s that great. A few things to know or expect: Prices I’ve listed are in USD. The dollar was particularly strong while I was there, and as a result, everything was very affordable. You are on a tropical island, and there are ants and geckos and other small island creatures that will sometimes get into your room. So don’t leave food out and clean up spills. The ants are tiny and don’t leave the walls too much and the little geckos stayed on the walls and overhead “somewhere.” Neither will bother you. There are mosquitoes at night. Believe me on this. Use bug spray or come home looking like you have chicken pox. (I look like I have chicken pox, but hey, I brought some of Fiji home with me. Is that a win?) The staff will take care of you. Some things can’t be fixed in a hurry. Remember that you’re on an island and there is no store to run to in case you need something or if something breaks. Overall, everything was in good order. I did find one broken thing and wondered about the type of person who would break something instead of wondering why it wasn’t repaired. Buy trip insurance. Protect your investment. Buy the insurance. If you need a power converter, get the Australian converter. Phones charge SUPER SLOWLY, more quickly when powered off. Consider a wireless charger. My internal charging port got moisture and couldn’t charge for several hours. A wireless charger would have worked and would have relieved a ton of anxiety. They are not kidding about the no wi-fi or TV in the rooms. It is always available in the main area tho you’re asked to not be on your device in the restaurant (fair). Wi-fi was strong. If you don’t have an international plan with your phone, you can buy a data plan at the Nadi airport. Make sure your phone is unlocked or the SIM won’t work. Everyone speaks American English. The tap water is desalinated and fine to drink. You’ll get an insulated water bottle in your room. Use it, refill from the carafe of water in your room or the orange water in the main area, and save resources. Seriously consider buying from the ladies that sell their hand-made goods. There are some nice Fijian pieces, the prices are good, and the money is well-used. Budget for the Christmas box which is used instead of tips. The money is for staff bonuses. They earn it and deserve it. The people of Yasawa have invited us to their home. This is the only resort and many of the villagers work here to make sure our stay is everything we expect. I’m not sure if they go out of their way, or if this is just who they are. I reminded myself each day how lucky it was that I was able to be there. I never felt the other way around. If you love the resort, tell everyone. If you have a problem, tell the manager, privately. Yasawa Island Resort and Spa is a gift.

Yasawa resort is on an amazing beach resort with charming staff. We went during the offseason as we happened to have a spare week and were already in asia. Overall I would say it has more isolated resort vibes than luxury vibes and so if you are looking for a more natural experience I think it’s a great option. In many ways it’s more affordable than its closest competitors but it’s still in the luxury resort price category. Some of the issues we ran into probably were due to the fact that it’s still offseason. We stayed in the very large honeymoon suite as I wanted access to the private pool. I really enjoyed the vibes, and the staff will deliver anything to you since you are located at the edge of the resort and are a bit more isolated than the rest of the guests. Perfect if you want some more privacy. Also when you tell the staff where you are staying they definitely up the level of game and give you the best experience they can. The honeymoon suite gave us access to daily massage which is for sure worth it. I’d recommend if you stay to get the massage/spa package as it’s way cheaper than ala carte (think 350 for 5 massages vs 200 for 1). The chartered flight to and from yasawa is very pretty and we got some great video footage. Pros: Got that isolated island feel Great spa Lots of fun activities Very pleasant staff Cons: If internet is your thing, I would not recommend coming. The wireless here is extremely slow and the 3G hardly works. We were regularly grateful we had bought prepaid SIM cards in Nadi, because the wifi would go down randomly. Tons of ants in the honeymoon suite. Although I got ants in my room at the Sofitel as well. I think fiji has a lot of ants. As much as they claim they are gluten free friendly my wife got glutened a few times and we constantly had to remind them. Despite asking detailed questions (ex. do you have a separate dedicated fryer for potatoes, like many different restaurants do), we would recieve different answers from different members of staff, leaving us with a sense of unease about whether the food was safe. The menu for every fourth or fifth meal would be annotated with which dishes were gluten free, but it did not happen consistently. They use only one toaster for gluten free and regular bread, despite the cross contamination. I don’t think they take gluten allergies super seriously, but I think a little bit of training could radically up their game. We have been told they are taking steps to fix this and that allergies are a big focus . Some of the facilities are a bit fragile. Our french doors were broken constantly. A large chandiloleer fell in the middle of the dinning area one day (fortunately, not on any guests). They left some nails on the stairs during a repair of the porch which we could have easily stepped on if we hadn’t noticed them. This is a big deal given we were mostly barefoot. According to the management, The directors of the resort have planned for some extensive renovations at the start of 2024, which will upgrade the resort and facilities in many ways.As part of a soft refurbishment that has been ongoing since June this year, the hanging lights in the dining room are all being replaced imminently. They’re not prepared in really basic ways for off season. The honeymoon suite was very clearly made for warm weather, and when we asked for more blankets because it was uncomfortably chilly when we tried to sleep, they just gave us another thing sheet like covering for our bed.

I cannot speak highly enough of my stay at Yasawa Resort! Yasawa Resort has perfected the art of "relaxed luxury". For me, the thing that set Yasawa Resort apart from other luxury stays is the love, attention and sense of connectedness that comes from spending time here. Sure, all the main amenities of a luxury resort are there, but as the only resort on the island, the Yasawa community (who work at the resort) really make you feel like you are welcomed into their home. And what a home - this island is stunning (and mostly untouched). There was a fantastic mix of activities (both group and individual/couple), as well as opportunities to relax and unwind. I would say, if you are looking for 24/7 WifFi, TVs, extensive spa treatment menus and multiple restaurant choices, Yasawa is probably not for you. But, if you are interested in staying in a beautiful beachside luxury resort (with breathtaking views), fabulous food, interesting activities (think snorkelling, diving, hiking, Sawa-i-Lau caves), even better company and service and experiencing the unparalleled hospitality of the wonderful community that makes up Yasawa, then this resort is for you!

Bula VInaka, Wonderful to read your review, thank you for posting. Our experience is definitely not about wifi and T.V - we try to offer an experience where guests unplug, unwind and relax. That's not to say there is nothing to do - the complimentary activities, trips and tours can keep you busy and entertained. The opportunity and experience of connecting and interacting with the Fijian people and the local culture becomes a real highlight for our guests. Your description of "sense of connectedness" and "relaxed luxury" is important and I think sums up what Yasawa tries to be. Vinaka, James McCann Owner Yasawa Island Resort & Spa

This was a perfect way to end our honeymoon! Everything was wonderful. Kind staff, excellent food and comfortable accommodations. The activities were fun (thank you Smiga) and the private beach picnic was a great memory we will cherish forever. We especially appreciated the staff sharing their culture, the singing on Sunday and the community dinner on Tuesday. Highly recommend the seafood platter! And again, we cannot say enough about the kindness of the staff - it really stands out (thank you Aku). Recommend this resort to anyone.

Bula Luke, The interaction with our staff becomes the unexpected highlight of a stay with us. Fijian night with the Love feast, Meke and communal dinner is a great way to get a true appreciation for the culture of Fiji - we are so lucky that all of the singing, food and interaction is provided by our staff and local villagers from Bukama. This is our second visit to Yasawa Island Resort (previously visited in 2018) and when we were considering where to spend our 20th wedding anniversary, this resort was an obvious choice. We were drawn to the quaint and secluded location where guests are not just numbers (there are only 19 rooms), but rather made to feel welcome. I would consider the entire resort as an experience, from the accommodations to the staff and other guests to the activities. Getting There The resort arranged our transfer flight from Nadi to Yasawa (they did not do this for our previous visit) which was really nice. We didn't get our departure date until right before the date so it was a bit more difficult to make appropriate accommodations in Nadi, but it did not matter to us a whole lot. The planes are very small (from 6-11 seats) so if you get a bit motion sick you might want to take a Dramamine. For all my trips to Fiji it seems the plane leaves LAX or SFO (coming from the States) in the late evening and arriving around 6am Fiji time. I have booked a day room at the Fiji Gateway hotel, but with their recent remodel it appears they want you to book either the night before or the night you leave. We had no issues coming or going. The Resort The welcome is outstanding and you begin to feel right at home. We stayed in a Deluxe Beachfront Bure (room 10) and noticed the regular bures were smaller and without direct access to the beach. We had the famous cookie jar along with a press coffee maker. The best was very comfortable and they have clearly remodeled since our last visit as the shower was nicely appointed. We completed a mini-fridge order form upon check-in which was quickly stocked. I didn't see anywhere to get these restocked without asking someone. During our last visit these forms were available in the room (which was nice). All the activities/massage etc. directors were present at the 6:30pm cocktail hour. It took us a night or two to figure out who we were suppose to find, but after that it was pretty easy to schedule activities. We were even able to schedule a few activities ahead if our chosen ones were booked the next day. Food and drink is included, but if you are picky eater, your options are limited. Beers were $12 Fijian and cocktails were $30. I would agree with other reviews that their cocktails are not consistently made which seems like an easy thing to fix. Perhaps craft cocktails are popular in the US so we are used to really good drinks, but securing a few good recipes and preparation standards will make their cocktail hour more popular. Activities I got the spa package ($550 Fijian) for a daily treatment which was really nice. They have really improved their spa experience since our last visit. There were several trips to the blue lagoon each week, several snorkeling trips to different locations, and the weekly Kava ceremony, Fijian dance and resort meal, visit to the village and Fijian church service. By far one of the best experiences is the daily picnics to one of their remote beaches. Basically they pack a picnic lunch for you (ordered ahead of time) and you take a boat to one of the locations. They drop you off with a radio and first aid kit, along with your lunch, and pick you up at a time of your choice. Each of the areas are beautiful but each have a little something different to offer. We completed the Scuba Certification Course with Aku and had a wonderful time exploring various dive sites. He takes scuba safety very seriously but ensures guests have a great time. Would highly recommend for those who are either certified or looking to become certified. We had a private beach dinner scheduled for our 20th wedding anniversary and the staff went out of their way to make this really special. I would highly recommend this resort for anyone who is looking for a unique experience. I would totally go back again!

Bula Thanks so much for taking the time to do a your really comprehensive review and for coming back for a return trip all the way from the USA. Wonderful that you got to do your dive course with Aku - our head of activities and Dive Instructor - Aku is one of the gems on our Yasawa team. We are blessed to have so many untouched dive sites all to ourselves and it was great to hear your feedback on his attention to safety. We strive to offer something a little different and unique to our guests - so thank you for your comments. We hope we see you back again on island soon - you will be able to give us your thoughts on the improvements, updates and changes we are doing. Vinaka, James McCann Owner Yasawa Island Resort & Spa

Peaceful and serene with a focus on relaxing. We really loved our time at Yasawa. Very sad to leave but have great memories. Pristine beaches, friendly and helpful staff, great food and for the price, we felt it was great value. Highlights for us were: Blue lagoon caves Visit to the village and the school. No crowds. No children. Walk/hike to the lookout. Private beach picnics. Falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean every night. Great meals with just enough choices. Spa treatments overlooking the ocean. Emphasis on cultural and traditional practices (cooking demo, Kava ceremony, dancing and singing.) The activities offered were just right in our opinion. No TV in the rooms (and we didn't miss this at any stage.) Plenty of privacy due to the way the buses are laid out. Very large rooms/bures. Plenty of room to spread out. We will definitely be coming back and can't wait.

Bula, Thank you for your review. The remoteness and lack of significant guest numbers is a highlight and the reason most of our guests stay with us. It does take some people a day or two to work out how to relax and unwind, but once they have discovered their own version of Fiji Time - recharging & relaxing becomes the focus. There are loads of complimentary motorised and non-motorised activities to do or just relax on the beach, in a hammock or on your own private beach. Many of the guests indulge in our Ultimate Spa Bonus package and have a 50-minute spa treatment every day of their stay. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Hubby and I are just back from 7 blissful days staying at the Yasawa Island Resort. Having read some critical reviews we felt the owners (despite the effects of covid) are working hard to address any issues and upgrade both bures and the public spaces to meet higher end luxury expectations. The pool/bar area is beautiful only surpassed by the natural beauty of the island’s many secluded beaches where romantic couples picnics are on offer. For those more active there is a great range of activities available, whether it be snorkelling, diving, kyaking, walks, cultural visits or you can just do nothing but relax, enjoy a cocktail, the delicious (and plentiful) food and warmth of the happy staff. It would be unfair to single out individuals as we were made to feel nothing was too much trouble by every staff member but suffice to say Manasa you lead from the front and we really did feel truely welcome. Vanaka for a fabulous stay and we hope to return one day!

Response from James McCann, Owner at Yasawa Island Resort & Spa
Responded 11 Sept 2023
Bula vinaka, Thanks of your comments. Manasa is the father of our resort and the figurehead and leader of our local team of staff. The resort is 32 years old and Manasa has worked for us for over 35 years. he is an icon of Fiji Tourism. Yes we are working hard in doing our unobtrusive upgrading and renovations. Bures have seen a selection of new internal and external furniture, decoration and rugs, with new hanging lights starting to go in to all rooms. The restaurant and bar has seen new furniture, tables and chairs - with more to come, with new lighting on the way. The soft refurbishment is continuing on and we are proud that guests are starting to see a significantly refurbished product. vinaka, James McCann Owner Yasawa Island Resort & Spa

My wife and I had an amazing 6 nights at Yasawa island resort. From the moment we stepped off the small plane ride from Nadi, we were made to feel like family. We loved the welcome singing form the staff. What a beautiful view of the water from the dining area and pool. Our Bure (1) was incredible. Much larger than we anticipated. The bed was very comfortable and huge walk in shower. We had a view of the water from our deck. Which also had a large sunbed. Bale was our attendant and did a wonderful job. She created a memorable evening by decorating the bed for our anniversary evening! The entire dining staff were great. Each meal was prepared with perfection and delicious. Manasa and Charles were great at the bar. The drinks were fantastic! We did the reef snorkel and the Blue Lagoon trip. Both were great and must do’s on the trip. Waqa, Olive and Apo were awesome with the dive/snorkel team. Special shout out to Smigger for showing everyone their cultural Cava ceremony. We also did the private beach picnics with Olie piloting the boat to a beautiful beach with a great basket of food and wine. Our favorite event was a beach picnic which we used as photography hour on their beautiful Yawani beach. Our favorite person/ event organizer was Masi!! She planned each days events the night before at pre dinner and everyone signed up at that time. She accompanied us on our photography hour to Yawani beach to snap about 100-150 pictures that we wanted for our 25th anniversary. Special thank you to Masi for her help with this! Another big thank you to Dan and Jopa out of the office for taking care of anything we asked for. Our spa visit was perfect with a view of the water directly in front of you. Carly and her husband are the general mangers and are very nice to meet. Thank you to the whole staff at Yasawa island resort for making our anniversary the best vacation experience we’ve had!

Bula Vinaka, Thank you so much for your review - your title really captures the essence of the resort - "Feels Like Home" this is what we strive for. Relaxation, unpretentious, genuine Fijian hospitality by staff who come from the local village and want to show you a different slice of life - Fijian style. I have passed on your comments and praise to all the staff in our morning meeting and thank you for the wonderful feedback. Masi, Aku, Smigga and all the activities team are amazing and the beach picnics are certainly a highlight. I hope to see you back on the island again soon.
