Stayed for a few nights for work. Hotel looks good online but is lacking a lot. Things like dirty windows (not just dust but mould on the outside) breakfast was very ordinary with cold food. The worst thing was the front desk staff, even getting someone to order a taxi was a mission.

What a pity! The hotel was remodelled from a very old Shanghai building which gives it architecture a very unique design. The room is spacious and very modern though with form they gave up ease of use and convenience (for example, you have to climb up into the shower). The most terrible part is service. Breakfast was self served which... More

I'm so sad because this hotel used to be truly amazing, great service, vibrant ambiance and cool everything in general. Now it's just not the same and has gone downhill completely. Now the place is like a ghost town and the service is just terrible. I've stayed here around 4 times and this time was a huge disappointment for me... More

Used to be my favorite hotel in all of Asia. Nice blend of boutique size, restaurant and location, plus awesome rooftop bar with DJ. This Summer they decided to cut off rooftop bar at midnight. I understand the decision but it removes one of the key awesome parts to this hotel. I would go somewhere else

Unfortunately, we were only able to stay in Shanghai for the final night of our 10 day honeymoon, as the majority of it involved exploring Central China. Upon arrival, we prayed (to no avail) that the impending Typhoon would force China Eastern Airlines to cancel our flight, and allow us to spend more time at the Waterhouse. Allow me to... More

A very humble entré but most things behind are top class. Large room, mine with a great view of the Bund. Very nice and service minded staff in the front desk. Quick laundry service. Great breakfast! I hopen for a better equipped gym but except from that - a very good hotel!

If you want sleek and chic during your stay in Shanghai, this boutique hotel fits the bill as it has history, too. It’s a converted warehouse, yes, but was also a headquarters for the Japanese army during World War II. There is little trace of its past in the design except for the bare concrete walls lining the expansive lobby.... More

This is a beautiful hotel! Pros: Lovely industrial decoration, strong character, amazing rooms and bathrooms, great staff. Cons: location is not very convenient, service is slow during breakfast hours.

The Waterhouse at south bund is excellent. My partner and I stayed for 2 nights in early December as part of a 2 week trip around China. The rooms are excellently presented, each with individual quirks and remnants of the old warehouse. Concrete washrooms and timber board flooring add to the industrial feel along with a unique front of house... More

We've stayed at the Waterhouse for one night and we won't probably return. The design is quirky and hip (we chosen the place for that) ... we prefers boutique/design hotels rather than big corporate ones but many details aren't up to 5 stars' standards (dirty walls/floor corners, ruined tend edges, dirty windows' glasses, unpleasant room's odor, room's poor soundproofing etc).... Staying in South Bund

Neighbourhood Profile
South Bund
This waterfront area below the most famous section of the Huangpu River has undergone multiple phases of development that started when the Waterhouse Hotel opened its doors. Though it’s been slower to catch on than people expected, every year something new and exciting opens up and gives people a reason to keep calling the South Bund the "Next Big Thing." There are a couple of landmark hotels and restaurants of excellent quality that serve as anchors, and multiple annual events such as beer festivals, art and fashion fairs and music shows take advantage of the wide spaces, waterfront location and the tiny man-made beach to host huge crowds of people. Wandering about the newness, one can stumble upon authentic Chinese life in the stone gates of people’s residences or the street markets.
