Certainly a beautiful hotel in a highly convenient business location. A ton of potential. Nice views and pleasant rooms. A couple of things that were frustrating: Mainly, an extremely confusing rate structure where additional payment is required for use of fitness facilities and pool, and sometimes for breakfast. Service is general was okay but a bit pedestrian for this level...

Dear levtahor, Thank you very much for choosing the Okura Garden Hotel Shanghai for your recent stay. As you mentioned, Okura Garden Hotel is located in a nice neighborhood with several shops and restaurants around, without mentioning the beautiful garden next to the hotel. This is one of the worst 5 star hotels I have ever stayed in. I cannot believe this is a 5 star hotel. The hotel is situated in a wonderful location in the middle of the city, with a beautiful garden and historical building. It's a shame the service staff's training and attitude are not fitting to reflect the outlook...

I am a frequent traveler to Asia and the Okura Garden is my favorite in Shanghai. The location cannot be better - it's within 5-minute walking distance to the Huaihai street and three subway stations (Lines 1, 10, and 13), and yet quiet and tranquil for mega city of Shanghai. The facility there is not ultra modern, but clear and...

Dear Longhornliu, Garden hotel is a very clean and elegant hotel, setting in a beautiful garden with excellent service all around. We have a great location for exploring the French Concession, with convenient metro connections. There are also a lot of local cafes and shopping around, as well as large modern malls. The Rose cafe dining area serves up a...

We really enjoyed our stay here! We stayed for a lengthy period when visiting Shanghai. I will go through various aspects of the hotel. 1. Smoking - this has been stopped in the hotel altogether. (I did not quite understand the legal position, I think it has been stopped in buildings in China? Or it will be later in the...

This is a very beautiful historical hotel but it does not look old at all. The concierge was extremely helpful and friendly and recommended some very nice local restaurants for us. The rooms were a bit small and plain, but the heated toilet seats were very nice! Front desk did have some trouble speaking and understanding English when we checked...

Old Shanghai Charms with modern/upgraded amenities. Well maintained and great service. Had a pleasant experience here. Location was really good in town. "With breakfast" rate an excellent value. Will be back. The backside was nothing to...

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
