We travelled with an organised group which may have influenced the type of room and service we were given. We received first class service with a large comfortable room (10A) having a view of the volcano from the bed (cloud permitting).

Arenal Observatory Lodge is the closest hotel to Arenal Volcano. Unfortunately, the volcano's peak was obscured by clouds everyday, but I did have a beautiful view of Arenal Lake outside my building. The property has multiple hiking trails, including one to a waterfall and another...More
This is an excellent location. We took two hikes during our two day stay -- one near the lodge to view birds, howler monkeys, flowers, trees, etc. and the other up the side of the volcano. The guide was excellent.

We loved this place and hope to return. From our balcony in one of the Smithsonian rooms we had a stunning view of Arenal and constant passing views of coatis, trogons, oropendulas, tanagers, and honeycreepers. Trails lead off to see even more wildlife, waterfall, and...More
We got in really late driving from the San Jose airport and the even though the kitchen was closed, the restaurant offered us excellent soup and salad. Our tour guide, Eduardo, for the morning walk around the hotel property trails was fantastic! He was so...More

We stayed in Casona. The lodge that has 5 rooms and shares 2 bathrooms. There were2 coffee makers in the communal area with coffee packets on our room. I did make coffee in the morning before I went to breakfast. I used tap water in the dining room there was a large water cooler which we filled our water bottles that I brought along. There were also water bottles you could purchase.

The La Fortuna Waterfall is about a 30-minute drive from the lodge. If you will have a rental car, driving yourselves would be the easiest way to get there. Alternatively, a cab to the waterfall would cost around $30 each way. There are also several tour companies that offer trips to the waterfall and could pick up from the lodge if this is something you would be interested in.
We look forward to your upcoming stay and please feel free to ask any additional questions you may have.

The lodge is pretty far away from town. I think that you can to and from town by taxi. However, I'm not sure there is much reason to go to La Fortuna in the evening. The attractions of the area are nature and adventure tours, not the night life. However, if you like to be in or near a town, you should probably consider another place to stay.
