My family of 11 people had a great time in Los Lagos! We had three separate "superior rooms". I liked that they were actually free standing cottages, allowing for lots of privacy. The hot springs were clean, relaxing and not too crowded, especially in the morning or after dark. The buffet breakfast was really good, with gallo pinto, sweet plantains, cassava pie, pastries, pancakes and this yogurt drink we all obsessed over. I would call it above par for a hotel continental breakfast. The swim up bar was a great spot to hang out, but the food wasn't too exciting. A few of us got the back massage treatment at the spa. I recommend trying at least one of the treatments during a stay. The rooms are partially open air, letting you take in the sounds of nature, and you get to relax in a private room with tea afterwards. The 40 minute back massage was a little under $60 per person and they were very punctual.

Our favorite thing about Los Lagos by far was the horseback riding tour. There is a barn on the property where you leave from and take a trip through the jungle to an observatory that shows a beautiful view of the Arenal volcano. Our guide was Danny, who I highly recommend. He was incredibly friendly, funny and skilled at controlling the horses. The ride up was tricky but the horses were very calm and knew what they were doing. We were bruised and sore after the ride, and a few of the more nervous folks were a little scared, so that is something to keep in mind. However, I felt very safe and we all had a great time by the end. The tour lasted about 2.5 hours and we left at 8am. If you go doing rainy season, I suggest going early to avoid the rain.

I took one star off because one of our rooms lacked hot water, which we brought up to the front desk and was never resolved. We were too busy to follow up, so I consider that partially our fault. Also, another room had a sulfurous smell, but again I don't think that was brought to the attention of the front desk. Overall the rooms were well kept, if simple.

We wish we could have stayed a few more days here! We had kind of low expectations for this place based on other reviews we read and we were sooo happy with our choice to stay here. The rooms were clean, nothings fancy but all you need. The pools and hot springs were awesome! The slides were so much for not only my 6 year old son but adults as well. Side note- check the depth of the pool before going down slides. If you have small children or older guests get a room close to the main area the resort is very spread out. The bartenders and servers were super friendly (Kevin was our favorite!). The breakfast buffet was great! All the traditional American breakfast essentials and some authentic Central American options. You are at the base of the volcano and the views are amazing when it’s clear. The walk to the observatory is a great workout and you will see many horses and cows. The front desk was helpful and friendly. We booked a tour through them with a local company and they booked us the wrong time, however, the tour company let us come the next day and made it all right so no harm done. A taxi to downtown La Fortuna is only about $10 USD and about a 10-15 minute ride. We had a great stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to the Arenal area, especially with children. My ONLY wish is that they had a water slide for little ones (2-4 year olds).

We visited a few hotels in the area, first of all they charge so much for extremely basic rooms, outdated with absolutely no view. we paid over $160 per night for the farthest room in the resort which they missed to communicate. You can tell from the minute you arrive to the reception how old and outdated everything is. We had dinner at their restaurant one time and we paid $50 for 2 people at an open buffet, everything tasted bad, literally nothing was tasty or made me want to go get more of at all.

The pools were nice and the resort is huge. Drinks are okay at the pool and they are pretty cheap. The look out spot is cool but don't drive up at night its pitch black with no signs and you will not know where to go.

Breakfast is included but it also tasted very bland and was just uneatable for me.

We ended up just grabbing what we need everyday morning and heading out all day and just coming back late at night to sleep.

I would not recommend this place to anyone.

While on with a tour group in Costa Rica part of the tour was an afternoon visiting this resort and taking in the hot springs for a few hours.
The resort has a nice changing room/restroom building on the property with secure lockers to store your personal items while relaxing at the springs.
Then it is a short walk to the stairway that leads down to the hot springs area which has a multitude of hot tub and pool style hot springs. The largest at about 104 degrees is a 4’ deep pool with a swim up bar/grill with stools in the water and bar service while you soak.
There is another hot springs pool with a couple of jetted loungers and waterfalls.
Then several more private enclave soaking areas as well throughout and all are varied in temperature levels from tepid to hot.
All of the areas were fairly well maintained with only some of the smaller spas having some leaf debri in them.
The staff was accommodating and helpful.
The tropical landscape was very nice and the old mill wheel was a nice accent.
Also on the property is a large gift shop with a very nice selection of gift items, snacks, clothes etc. to easily find something you cannot do without.

Good:
I loved the hot springs- really good to have access to them included in the price which made it good value.
The gardens at the hotel were beautiful and lots of birds, lizards and butterfly garden to see.
There are stables on site and a great ride up to the observation point. Horses well kept and cared for.
The shower was really good - best I found on holiday.
Big choice for breakfast and good quality.

Not so good:
Staff not as friendly or helpful as other hotels I stayed at but this is a big hotel I suppose.
It would be much better to have Wi-fi available in rooms rather than just communal buildings.
I was in a basic room and just two beds a long side board and a wardrobe. The only chair was on the veranda outside the room which other guests walked past to get to their rooms.
One bed was good other really old and lumpy.
Safe old and had to get an engineer to help me open it.
Not keen on the alligator being kept in a small pen.

We loved our stay. The hot springs and all of the pools were amazing and the grounds in general were so beautiful. We booked 5 activities through the hotel, and they were all amazing. The staff took care of this before we even arrived, and when we wanted to add an additional activity, they helped us to book the one that would be perfect for our group.

We rode horses up to the observation point, and it was clear that the horses were well taken care of. Our guide Danny was both funny and informative, and he was passionate about taking care of the horses and all the other wildlife.

We got massages, and the spa was incredibly peaceful. We left feeling very relaxed, and it was a great experience!

Our room was beautiful, and we were treated to a cheese platter and sangria upon arrival. The shower was amazing and our patio was lovely!

We ate at the restaurant many times, and the food was very good, although there are also many great options outside of the resort. We would recommend the buffet over the a la carte, as it was cheaper and the food quality was very good. There were many options for breakfast, and it was very tasty.

I wish there had been wifi in our room instead of just in common spaces, but this did not end up being too big of a problem.

For 88$ per nice this place is fantastic. Is it the nicest place we’ve ever stayed? Nope. But I’m factoring the price I paid with this rating.
Pros
Adequate clean rooms with housekeeping service daily

Phenomenal shower and pressure of water

Grounds are beautiful- loved all the pools and hot springs

Great gift shop

Great location when doing adventure activities near Arenal

Very good breakfast buffet

Cons
Customer Service isn’t magnificent and they charged me 10$ for losing a key ( really?)

Dinner at the restaurant was expensive and terrible. Do yourself a favor and take a taxi for dinner into town- even with the taxi your meal will likely be better and cheaper

The grounds, location and staff are clean, good and friendly. I was extremely frustrated with the internet situation. There is no internet in the rooms and the cable tv is all in spanish with only 1 english channel. On days when i didnt want to do any tours and just sit in the room to watch tv or use the internet, i could not do that. You have to go to the lobby or bar to use an extremely slow wifi. If the hotel managment is reading this i would rather have the option to pay for wifi access in my room if its premium connection. The buffet was a repeat of the same items every day which was rather boring and bland. You cant watch any TV. A resort of your caliber should have Smart TV's where users can connect to a netflix etc. For what i paid for this hotel and the amenties, food , etc i give it a 3star rating and will never repeat a stay here.

I’ve just retuned (with my husband and 5 year old) from a single night at this resort as part of an overnight tour with our tour guide.
The resort is breathtakingly beautiful and the rooms spotless and large and the view of the volcano is stunning. There is also plenty of paid activities to do if you have bottomless pockets and little sense!
The hot springs are brilliant and beautiful and the two slides kept out five year old amused for ages (it’s just a shame that those particular pools are FREEZING and only the children could seem to cope with the temperature).

However, both my husband and myself couldn’t shake the feeling that the whole resort had a really unwelcoming vibe about it. For the entire time we were there we felt really on edge. This was only compounded by the staff who’s attitude was really poor. A few examples being:
1. On asking the man at reception what my room number was his response was to sigh, roll his eyes and say “It’s written on your band!!!” He hasn’t told me this and furthermore what was written on my wristband appeared to be hieroglyphics.
2. The bar staff were all surly and desperate to avoid eye contact. We were only on a B&B basis so when my husband tried to use his card to buy some drinks the response was “No! Cash!” (Which is ridiculous - who, when using hot springs, is going to want you use cash!!!!)
3. The slide/ pool guard appeared to view the slides as a curse upon his life. When some (adult) eejit didn’t wait a suitable amount of time to go down the slide after my son (who’s only 5) and subsequently landed on him in the pool he proceeded to first rollock our son for seemingly not having the speed and skill of an Olympic swimmer. Only when he’d done this did he then turn his attention to the adult cannonballer!

Even if we’d had the time of our lives at the resort it would be unlikely we’d return as this is our second holiday to Costa Rica and we have other countries to tick off. However, would I recommend it to others? Absolutely not! There must be more welcoming resorts in the area!!!! The staff need serious staff development and training, perhaps they could visit our main hotel the RIU Palace to see how they should interact with guests. Smile, be joyful and say hello (even if your not feeling it!)

We landed at the hotel after a long difficult trip. we were greeted by a very rude front desk clerk. We got in around 9:15 the main restaurant closes at 10:00 we ate and drank very poor quality and extremely expensive food and drinks. to top it all off we were at the bar finishing are drink when the staff closed the time was 10:12 we have never experienced this type of behavior at a high-class restaurant or any restaurant in our entire life we gave this place a three star because the pool and the hot tubs were fantastic. the staff and the food at the pool bar is amazing so if you go there just avoid the main restaurants and you’ll have a great dining experience. thanks Arturo and Jose

I don't recall the hours, but we were able to eat before an early excursion pickup. Most of it was fruit, eggs, etc. You could probably grab a croissant or something for the road, but there's not extensive assortment of granola bars or other easily packed items.

I would not recommend the on-site ziplines, they were very basic and tame without much of a view. We did a repelling tour and horseback tour off-site and had a blast at both!
