This is a character hotel - which seems to be converted from a plantation mansion and grounds leading down to a lake. The bedrooms have old world charm - half of those staying in my room said that it could have benefited from a lick of paint - but this did not detract from our

I was lucky enough to have spent a few nights at Hotel Casa Turire while on a business trip last week. The hotel was chosen mainly for its location as it is halfway between San Jose and The Southern Caribbean town of Puerto Viejo. Little did we know that we stumbled upon a true

Before I even arrived at the driveway of the Casa Turire, the visit was already pleasant, for the surrounding countryside is beautiful, and the pace of life (if the way people drive in these parts is sufficient evidence) seems more relaxed. This was my fifth visit to Costa Rica,

I usually take the #32 on the way to Puerto Viejo. This time I decided I wanted a break with a stopover in the mountains. I have driven Turriabla route many times because I like the views, but never stayed. I am hooked! If you are one of these people who enjoy the journey

Beautiful gardens and surroundings, comfortable beds and spacious rooms, super friendly and helpful staff at both front desk and restaurant. Very good breakfasts made to order. Would love to stay there again!

Are you driving yourself or taking a bus? If you are driving yourself than I highly highly recommend having a GPS. Otherwise you will get hopelessly lost as road signs seem to be few and far between. I would also recommend making sure that you are there before dark. The roads there are full of switchbacks up and down the mountains and, while beautiful, every turn could bring you up to an on-coming bus or a guy with a horse pulled cart. It was a beautiful ride but I was white knuckling it by the time we got there. All that being said... the place is gorgeous. Well worth the trip. Enjoy.
