I think 3 or 4 nights at The Springs is sufficient, especially if you plan to visit other parts of the country. My family of 5 recently stayed for 3 nights (out of our 8 total nights in Costa Rica). We loved The Springs, and at the time of check out we were sad we didn't have at least one more night there, but based on our overall itinerary, 3 nights was perfect for this trip.
Depending on what you want to do and where else you want to go in Costa Rica (it was our first visit to CR and we wanted to stay in several different locations throughout the country), you may want more or less nights there.
If you're staying at the Springs, you can go TO Club Rio for free (to eat at the restaurant, enjoy the hot springs, lounge by the river). Aside from that, you pay a la carte for the different activities offered.
