I loved this place. It was particularly refreshing after the absolute chaos that I experienced the night before at Rocking J's. The staff was endlessly helpful and patient, the showers were spacious and the water hot... plus the hostel well water was potable (as opposed to the rest of town). Wifi was reliable and the bike rentals were cheap and...

Although it could be a little cleaner, I enjoyed staying there. The staff is really cute and so are the cats and dogs living there. The beds were comfortable. There were a lot of ants in the outdoor kitchen, so you have to be careful with your food. It's also the only hostel with drinkable tap water without an additional...

This is a great hostel right near the beach and town! The rooms are clean, there is a full kitchen, a pool table and lobby area. They rent bikes for $5 a day and surf boards for $12/day. The owners were really nice and helpful.

La Ruka has everything a backpacker can wait for: it has a great arty atmosphere, the staff is super friendly, the common parts are clean, there is hot water, free internet and there is a place dedicated for smokers! If you come to puerto Viejo, choose la Ruka for sure!

Great atmosphere, can't beat the price, and hands down the best customer service I've ever received. The staff went above and beyond to get our group in. The owners are incredibly friendly and easy to get along with and really tied the whole experience together. Will definitely stay here again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our hostel has two buildings that are surrounded by tropical jungle filled with flora, fauna & fruit trees. When you arrive you’ll probably be greeted by one (or both!) of our friendly dogs Ruka and Moo Moo and, if you’re lucky, our kitten, Sirena. You’ll find us at the reception in our octagon lounge where you can relax after your journey, grab a brownie & a beer, peruse some used clothing, swap some books at our book exchange and use the free WiFi which available across the property. Upstairs you’ll find our two private double rooms and at the back is our outdoor guest kitchen. Our second building has three separate 6 or 8 bed dorm rooms all with private bathrooms. We have hammocks around for lazy days and also offer snorkel + fin rentals as well as surf lessons and board hire when you’re ready to take in the incredible water, waves and sands of Black Beach, Salsa Brava, Cocles beach and many more ... more   less
