I was in San Jose for 2 weeks' work. A friend recommended Hotel Don Carlos. It was a lovely "home away from home". An older style hotel, with extremely helpful and friendly staff. The room was clean and serviced daily. I had a large room with TV including satellite channels; a very clean ensuite with large shower; ample storage space,...

Stayed at the Hotel Don Carlos when I landed in San Jose, before heading to Hone Creek. The room was large and clean. The beds were very thin and uncomfortable. Overall, the service was amazing. Every single person that worked at the hotel was friendly and helpful. The breakfast in the dining room was lovely and more than sufficient. We...

We stayed here for one night on 1 Feb 2017 after arriving from Paris. Although many people arrive in San Jose, stay at an airport hotel, and then move on from there, I would recommend a night in San Jose to get a feeling for urban Costa Rica and its culture and history. And Don Carlos is a great place...

Very friendly and helpful staff. Convenient restaurant with good food. Big, CLEAN rooms. (No problems with the shower as mentioned in other reviews) Great gift shop. Quiet. Many peaceful nooks to sit and relax in. Beautiful tiles and art work. Walking distance to museums and pedestrian "mall". Three blocks from other restaurants and a beer tap room!

Stayed here on our first and last night's in this beautiful country and could not have chosen a better, central location for these pivotal nights. This charming hotel has been owned by the same family for several generations, and their attention to detail shows. They are very attentive and happy to help where they can. This former presidential home is...

After a fairly lengthy and slow trip from the Alajuela International airport our driver arrived at the Hotel Don Carlos. Coming through many 'sketchy' parts of the crowded city I starting wondering what sort of place we were headed to. However, all fears were allayed after arriving at this historic and quaint hotel very close to the downtown parks and...

I had stayed at Hotel Don Carlos 25 years ago, and couldn't wait to get back. It is such a charming building. My family loved it. The location is great. San Jose is very safe to walk around now, even at night. The front desk people will give you a map, and tell you areas to avoid. We stayed in...

Delightful family who run their hotel with great care and have such pride in providing a positive experience for guests. Not luxurious but superbly clean rooms and very comfortable beds. The building is fascinating and filled with interesting objects, ornaments and quirky furniture. Definitely a unique hotel. The only downside for us was the noise level at all hours which...

The hotel is a historic, former residence in a nice, quieter spot on the edge of downtown, called Bario Amon. There are lots of beautiful old houses and buildings in the area and you are only a short walk away from the heart of downtown attractions. The hotel is an interesting old building, rooms are adequate and comfortable and they...

The more time I spent here, the more I liked it. Very helpful friendly staff and a beautiful building. So many bits and pieces of art to look at. Lots of character. Rooms we had on first floor were much brighter than rooms we had on second floor. So much better than the big chain hotels. Real charm. Food in...
