We loved the feel of this family-run boutique hotel. The food was excellent; the best we ate in Wales during the whole of our two week tour of the country. The breakfast doesn't have a "full english" option but the breakfasts available are inventive and tasty. The chefs both mornings of our stay also made some porridge for our children, which was superb, as was the pancakes. Every single meal we had here was of very high quality, but we particularly enjoyed the smoked salmon platter and chocolate dessert.

Due to COVID we decided in advance that it would be easiest to book for dinner both nights at Llys Meddyg and we were so glad that we did given the quality of the food served. The secret garden which is currently used as a restaurant is well laid out and has good atmosphere and lighting (and heaters!).

Our room was well equipped and the beds and pillows very comfortable. The children appreciated the good wifi and I liked the teas, coffees, hot chocolate and oat milk.

The staff were helpful and friendly. One young waiter spent a good few minutes talking with us about the best things to do on a rainy day with two children and we greatly appreciated his advice.

The hotel is well located on the edge of the town, but close enough to walk through town and down to the water.

We had one issue, the room that we were in had noise transference from the kitchen and secret garden (which is being used extensively as a restaurant at the moment due to COVID). However, I wouldn't let this put others off. If you are likely to be kept awake, then avoid rooms 6 & 7 but don't miss out on this wonderful hotel.

Amazing! We came in hoping to book a table and were greeted by two lovely, welcoming waitresses. Unfortunately they were fully booked but managed to squeeze us in which we were very grateful for, right away they took our telephone numbers, names and addresses for track and trace. Dining in llysmeddyg was an unforgettable experience and we will be returning. The food came quickly and was full of flavour, the portions are very generous and the service was impeccable, the atmosphere in the garden was calm and controlled, thank you llysmeddyg for making our holiday that little bit extra special.

The food here is exceptional. We had some special requests and they were delivered without any fuss and were very well received. I had ox cheek with creamy mashed potato. Absolutely melted in my mouth. My daughter's vegetarian cauliflower main was almost too pretty to eat and she said it was delicious. In fact everybody loved their meals. The wine was great too and not over expensive.
The restaurant itself is in a lovely setting with huge french doors overlooking the garden. Service was excellent. Incredible value @ £28 each + drinks.
I've also had a lovely Saturday night meal in the cellar bar with family and our cockapoo. It's a more intimate venue with a roaring fire in the winter.
Highly recommended. Wish we lived nearer but I guess we could always stay the night in one of their lovely rooms.

Sadly the evening didn't turn out as expected. We fully understand that due to the ongoing pandemic it's hard to get staff and source ingredients but some of our disappointment was wholly avoidable.

First the good stuff. All the staff were polite and friendly; they did try hard. The food was mostly to a high standard and well presented. Bread board was delicious with generous servings of tapenard and balsamic vinegar. The seats outside are hard but ask for cushions; they will be provided without question. Good choice of wines by the glass

Now the gripes:

When we booked a table it was not made clear we would be outside in the garden. Fortunately it was the warmest evening for weeks but we still needed the overhead infra-red heater partly as this was also the only source of light. But the control knob that adjusted the intensity also controlled the next table's heater and they really wanted a lower setting, which caused some awkwardness.

When our breadboard arrived the waitress offered to bring side plates but these didn't arrive until we chased them later
Our side orders arrived so much later than our mains we'd assumed they'd been forgotten
Twice we asked for extra bread but this never materialised
My crab linguine tasted strongly of chilli which totally overpowered the flavour of the crabmeat. The waiter checked with the chef and indeed this wasn't mentioned on the menu. He agreed it should be and in fact took the price of the dish off the bill which was unexpected and a nice touch. Thank you.

Overall we didn't regret eating here. We understand it's tough operating a restaurant under current conditions but a little more care, organisation and maybe better training could have made a difference

Went with expectations based on an earlier visit. This was different!. Rather than eating in the pleasant main building, we found our own way, unguided and undirected, via a back stairs to an outback building which is now the eating house.Paltry decor, cheap art work confirms the shanty town standards now being endorsed. Outdoor, unheated and poorly lit toilets more befitting a drunken Summer music festival are the new standard. The food was acceptable and the service attentive. but nothing good befits this ambiance-shabby rather than shabby chic!

Really disappointed with the service at the Kitchen gardens in Llys Meddyg. We had to ask to be served after a 20 minute wait and then had to wait a further 50 minutes for just cocktails. Furthermore, one of the staff was very short when we asked how long our drinks would take, saying how ordering 20 drinks would take at least an hour to make when we ordered 12.
However, we did go for a meal recently and the food was really outstanding and really good value for money- especially in Newport!
Sadly, the service we had on drinks has really put us and our friends off from returning anytime soon, especially as this was our favourite spot in Newport as locals.

Overpriced hotel, rooms shabby need decorating, paid £180 for one night room had damp patches on walls.
Staff rude and not accommodating. Wrote to management after visit sharing our concerns, never heard a thing back from them. Won’t be returning.

What a fantastic place in a stunning location, everything was perfect from our arrival and the warm welcome we received to the very mouth watering food we had. The room was just about perfect great nights sleep. But I feel what made this place more or less perfect was the staff, nothing was too much trouble and the amount of knowledge on local spots was very welcoming. If you want to have a special time at a stunning place then this place is right up there.

Having been recommended Llys Meddyg by friends and family, we decided to stay for a night and we were not disappointed.
The hotel is stunning and so is the decor.
We found the owners and staff to be friendly and welcoming.
Breakfast was delicious with their very own home smoked salmon.
Perfect place for exploring this beautiful area .

Every last corner of the hotel is absolutely beautiful. is very well done. Provisions in the room are unbeatable (especially the coffee machine). The bathroom was incredible and we all enjoyed a lovely bath just because it was so nice. Staff were helpful and pleasant on the phone prior to arrival and during our stay.
Welsh signage around the hotel and restaurant would have been appreciated.
The Secret Garden and cellar bar are fantastic - cocktails in the garden with the fire really made our stay feel special.
Breakfast was the best we’ve ever had! Excellent choice even for the children who were delighted with extra pancakes and cinnamon sugar. The young man who served us was extremely affable and we appreciated the few words of Welsh greeting he spoke to us as Welsh speakers.
