Before we left after a 2 night stay, we were asked by the hotel to submit comments to help improve. But it is hard to improve on perfection.
We have stayed in many places in our years of travelling - Shangri La, Four Seasons, Lela, Taj etc, but never have we had better facilities and service and all for a very modest price.
We were picked up from the airport in a nicely kept Mercedes, one of 3 cars from the hotel (there is a lovely looking Rolls also).
The hotel is located in a beautiful, leafy Johannesburg suburb. There are two pools and a tennis court in the manicured property. Our suite was huge with glass chandeliers in each of the large bathroom, separate sitting room and bedroom. Outside we had our own jetted hot tub and large marble table and shared an ample sized swimming pool with 2 other suites. You could happily spend your total day in the suite. But you would be missing out on the lovely common areas of lounge, bar beside the koi pool, spa, gift shop with beautiful and reasonably priced African art and beautiful dining room.
Without exception the staff were well trained, professional, friendly and helpful.
Our bounteous breakfast which was included in the price, had bubbles, fresh juices, delicious fruit, yogurts, cereals and OYSTERS plus an ordered cooked breakfast, if you felt you could handle more. We enjoyed two wonderful dinners overlooking the gardens and on the last night were too full for dessert, but were brought a surprise of chocolates over frothing, steaming dry ice. A perfect way to end a perfect stay.

We were welcomed by the guard, who took us to reception. Checking in was seamless and included completion of covid questionnaire and recording of temperature. Rambo assisted us with our luggage and took us to our suite. The Madiba suite is exceptional and we got an orientation around the suite. He further took our lunch order. The salmon was perfectly done.

Later had dinner outside after spending time in our jacuzzi. We had pork belly and salmon. The pork belly was accompanied by a delicious pumpkin sauce. Did drinks at the bar and later moved to the lounge. The lounge was disinfected prior to us moving there as there were previous guests.

Breakfast included cold and hot servings with could being buffet style. The menu is not extensive, however the food preparation and plating is tops.

Forgot my fitness tracker and was able to pick it up a day after we had checked out. Amazing service for the entire period we were there. Thank you for making it memorable.

We arrived late at night on our first ever vacation to Africa and we’re so warmly greeted by the staff who were waiting for our late night check in at the beautiful Residence Boutique Hotel. When we were escorted to our room and opened the door there was a very nice spread of snacks (fruit and cheeses) set out for us. Just one of the many special touches this hotel has.

The Staff at this hotel was amazing so very friendly, kind and helpful We were so glad we had planned three nights here after two days of flying just to get here!! It was absolutely a wonderful place to just relax and unwind and get oriented to the South Africa time zone before venturing out to our three Safari Camps.

We absolutely loved our relaxing breakfasts out on the patio amidst the gardens and were spoiled by our cappuccinos and champagne breakfasts. We had two wonderful dinners here as well. Our waiters were amazing. We did not venture from the property as we wanted to just relax. There were so many fun rooms to just sit and relax and enjoy a drink. Beautiful pool area. This is a beautiful property. We definitely plan to return. We are already talking about returning.

We had to spend a night in Johannesburg in order to get a flight out the next day. The room was so amazing we decided to order room service so we could enjoy it before having to leave. When I say room, I mean rooms! and a large deck with a jacuzzi that already warmed up and waiting. We looked at the stars from it. The bedroom has a large adjacent living room. There is a large bathroom with two sinks and the shower has two shower heads. You could also have a bath if you wanted. The walk in closet was great for keeping your bags out of the way. I can't say enough good things about the staff who were kind and helpful. When we went to breakfast the next morning I started to put my purse around the side of the chair and all of a sudden the waiter put a little table next to me to put it on. Now that is service! Once again on our month long trip through southern Africa, we were probably one of a handful of guests (if that many) in this amazing hotel. With regard to Covid, I felt safer in all the four countries in Africa that we visited than I do in the US. Masks are mandatory indoors and outdoors if in a group. Temperature checks are required everywhere. You are given hand sanitizer before entering any building or store. Covid tests are required coming and leaving all countries. No one checked for a Covid test upon our arrival home to the US!

Based on reviews we switched our tour advisors recommendation from the Four Seasons to The Residence and have to say we were disappointed. Upon arrival we seemed like an inconvenience. The “hostess” presented us with a COVID form to complete and then disappeared. Information about the hotel’s amenities, restaurant or area where not given. When we went to our room we discovered it was not the type we booked and when we asked we were told the room we asked for was occupied and the “sauna was broken anyway”. The room was large but tired. One window was broken and would not completely close. The room was over the lobby so was noisy. The hot tub was also quite old and did not work- this plus the sauna was the reason we chose this hotel. We had planned to go into the city for dinner but were tired from safari so decided to stay at the hotel even with the VERY limited menu.
The restaurant staff were the only redeeming part of the hotel. I went to check if they could customize something for a vegan diet (they had 1 appetizer and 1 menu item that was vegan) and was told no. Richard the host was very friendly and when we came to eat remembered my dietary restrictions and wine selection request. Service was great at the restaurant but food was uninspired and as I do not eat rice my vegan coconut curry was a few pieces of broccoli and carrots ina but if sauce for a lot of money. No tofu or legumes to be found. Richard was very friendly and attentive as was the other waiter but based on food and price I can’t recommend the restaurant or hotel. Disappointing stay and was glad it was only one night. When we checked out bellman and staff were no where to be seen. Again felt like an inconvenience and the girls at the front desk have zero understanding of customer service.

We have become regular guests at The Residence because it’s such a clean, comfortable, warm, welcoming place to stay. The property has everything a traveler needs and the rooms are well appointed and maintained. The dining room has outstanding dishes, and the cozy bar with its fireplaces and live piano is always inviting. The staff are very accommodating and they even remembered us from previous visits. The concierge arranged for one of their cars to take us to Nelson Mandela Square and then pick us up later, which we very much appreciated. One of the highlights of our visits in Johannesburg is a stay at The Residence.

Just so nice to stay at such an excellent hotel that isn't owned by a big chain. You can tell the difference and not even the Four Seasons can compare. They don't skimp out on any amenities and you don't feel as though a consultant has come through and told them where to save on money!

The staff here are first class. We were a group visiting from America & Europe. Most of us are young professionals and I booked this hotel to try something new. It exceeded all expectations. They picked up a couple in our group in their classic Rolls Royce, dropped us in town for a tour and when we went out to the bars at night the driver was calling me to check on us and came to pick us up when needed. What a superb hotel! The rooms are super luxurious and each one appears to be slightly different. I don't think anyone could be disappointed!

The girl at reception couldn't do enough for us and all of the staff were great. They are a credit to The Residence Boutique Hotel who are lucky to have them! Many thanks team for making our trip so great. I think a couple in our group came back again and booked your penthouse because they liked it so much!

The Residence is a unique property located in an upscale neighborhood. Beautifully and warmly decorated, each room is different, clean, spacious and well equipped. Very comfortable beds, big walk in closets to organize your luggage, large bathrooms, and a home away from home feel. The common areas have cozy little niches for relaxing with a coffee or something stronger. Nice pool area. The service here is friendly and very obliging. We enjoy the restaurant very much and it has an excellent selection of appetizers and main dishes. Try the Malva pudding. Wine list has some great South African choices. We were met at the airport by the hotel staff who drove us in a Mercedes sedan to the hotel and pointed out a number of landmarks. The Residence is a great place to stay for both a tour of the city or just for a layover coming from or going on a safari. We stayed here twice and were very pleased both times.

My wife and i experienced this hotel in August.
Nothing is spared on attention to detail and decor and furnishings throughout.
Our room boasted a separate lounge area as well as a (small) sauna in the basement and a jacuzzi on the patio.
They run a beauty salon on the premises where those who want pampering can enjoy anything from pedicures and manicures to massages.

The staff are very attentive to clients needs and very friendly.
Both dinner as well as breakfast were superb in the well appointed restaurant.

There is a cosy lounge in the bar area where one can have a relaxing drink and conversation at the romantic fireplace especially on cold days.

This is a fantastic hotel for the discerning traveler or tbe hopelessly romantic couple wanting a five star break with personal attention and pampering.

Love it!
