If you want to feel like you "have arrived in Africa", instead of staying at the run-of-the-mill international chain hotels near the airport, you should consider African Rock. The hotel is small and quiet with a personable and professional staff. They have an excellent chef- the highlight for me on our stay was springbok carpaccio and excellent beef fillet. The rooms are luxurious with heated bathroom floors and towel rails. The photos by other reviewers are accurate. And they offer free transfers to/from the airport - about 20-minute drive each way. This was my 3rd stay and I look forward to returning.

Wonderful small hotel in safe location. Hotel is lovely and clean, with large rooms and a beautiful pool area. We also enjoyed dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. Would recommend to anyone needing somewhere to base themselves.

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Part of our itinerary include spending one night at the ARH on our inbound journey and one night on our outbound journey. The ARH is an absolutely first class hotel which offers amazing facilities, customer service and food all provided by very efficient and extremely friendly staff. The service starts with an airport meet & greet and transport to the hotel. Our respective drivers were very good and nothing was too much trouble for them. We were allocated the same room on both our separate stays and it was superb. We had three meals on each of the days we stayed at the hotel the quality of all of them was amazing prepared by knowledgeable chefs. On our first stay we had Springbok for our mains and it was awesome and there is no wonder Lions like it! My wife and I also took time to use the hotel's Spa and she commented that her facial treatment was the best she has ever experienced. My massage was also very good and relieved and took away the strains and aches from our long flight getting to South Africa. This trip was going to be once in a lifetime but we loved it so much that we are planning to return next year and we will definitely be calling in at the African Rock Hotel again! …

When we arrived greeted and treated kind with respect. Helpful staff. Great room with coffee bar and extras. The food is top of line and they accommodate food sensitivities with grace. They go above and beyond. Hence we are staying here again :)

Just a wonderful place to stay! Very nice Spa, great food , special gift shop, extremely helpful and warm and friendly staff. We were only there one night , but will return again. We would choose to stay there instead of the airport hotel, it’s convenient and they offer a free shuttle.

This lovely boutique hotel within close proximity to the airport has a true african heritage and beautifully decorated. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and has authentic african decor. There is a spa, relaxing lounge area, outside patio area and great pool all surrounded by beautiful gardens and lush greenery. The cuisine was great and the service was very good. Overall, I highly recommend this boutique hotel to all travellers.

We ended up here by happenstance after a missed flight connection to Botswana and could not have felt more lucky. The hotel is charming and cozy and very well appointed - lovely bedding and furnishings and extremely warm and welcoming staff. It is safely tucked into a gated community so one can even go for a jog. They quickly arranged a guide to allow us to make the most of our bonus day in Johannesburg and see the Apartheid Museum - which is a truly memorable, moving and educational experience. Calvin took good care of us and helped to really give us a sense of South Africa in our short time there. Dinner back at the hotel at the Blue Hippo restaurant with Chef Timothy was wonderfully good - excellent food with great service at a lovely table by the pool in front of a roaring fire place. A perfect first dinner on our trip. Breakfast the next morning was very very good, and a ride back to the airport was arranged to put us back on our way. All of us were glad for the unexpected layover and would build in another stop here on our way to the Okavango Delta if we are lucky enough to return this way.…

Excellent place to be! The best! Very high quality and levels. Thimothy de Villiers is an extra ordinary good cook! Excellent as well. Owners and staff are also very friendly and highly professional. Feels like home. Fireplace, wines, food, breakfast, everything. Massage the best ever experienced.

Very comfortable overnight stay in transit. Setting was quiet and relaxing. I was in room 4 on the first floor next to the shop. The garden was beautiful and in the evening there was a fire in the outdoor fireplace. Had dinner and breakfast on site and the food was delicious.

Very nice boutique hotel in Johannesburg, few rooms make you feeling the only guest, and rooms are filled with all nice details to make them each different. Dining is superb, with internal kitchen and chef, only slightly slow at breakfast during peak hour. Very quiet and safe, continently close to the international airport
