The Balalaika has been around for many many years and somehow, this quaint hotel managed to maintain a very personal feel although it is really a very large hotel with a phenomenal amount of rooms. A leafy environment with many trees and 2 swimming pools. Stayed here for a few days on a business trip. Very helpful staff, attentive management,...

The perfect place to stay while visiting Sandton. The gardens are absolutely superb and a great meeting place to catch up with Family and Friends. The family rooms are by far the best we have ever had and the service is excellent. Staff are absolutely phenomenal. We brought my elderly mum to spend a day with us in the gardens....

We are grateful our agent selected Balalaika Sandton, 4 blocks away from Mandela Square and its great restaurants and nice shopping center. We were leaving at 5 am and they even arranged for a breakfast bag just by asking. Waiting for us at the reception

I recently stayed at this hotel for 2 days. Its busy and dusty with all the building going on around it, the parking is a nightmare having its entrance a mile away from the hotel, and the main building bedrooms are a bit tired. The bars are OK, the service is not always what one would expect, and this is...

It's a 1940s hotel, low rise spread over a wide area – my room (2347) is at the back overlooking the rear exit, but as I’m on the top floor it’s bright and airy so acceptable. There is construction work next door but that was quiet over the weekend. The Club Sandwich was odd being a concoction of the guests'...

I booked this hotel for my leisure trip to Johannesburg as recommended by my friend [originally because of safety of other locations]. The hotel located 5 minutes drive from Sandton Gautrain. While I am not aware initially, when arriving Sandton by Gautrain, you can take shuttle from train station to the hotel for free (probably just need the hotel know...

I stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights, the rooms are clean and all.The downside was we went in Winter season so its very cold, the heaters/ac in the room does not work efficiently. We struggled to get the heating system to work properly as it would go on and off. We opted for breakfast only at the hotel cause...

Situated in Sandton, the rooms are clean, and housekeeping is very good, food is good, alas it has a few bad points, construction all around it, so can be very noisy. And as a few Protea Hotels we found that, communication between departments in the hotel are bad at best, with our booking, we were on a bed and breakfast...

In an accessible and safe location, although with much building going on around it currently. It is a favourite of airline crews. Rooms are fine, but the best bit is probably breakfast on the terrace overlooking the gardens. A calming experience with friendly and attentive staff and the normal buffet selection, and a good omelette station. It was looking a...

The Balalaika has been around for ages. It's well located for Sandton, the Gautrain, etc. But the hotel is a bit tired and even shabby in parts...... I've stayed here a few times over the years and the rooms are really nothing too special. In fairness, they are comfortable and certainly the value is a lot better than some of...

Dear “GPDxb” Your feedback on ‘TripAdvisor’ is much appreciated. The Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton was established in 1949 and has stood the test of times. As mentioned we are located in the “heart of Sandton", with Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square and the Gautrian Station, just down the road and we offer a complimentary shuttle to...
