Great customer service and staff were attentive and helpful. Would visit again in the future if I return to South Africa. Located near Ushaka Marine world. However it is not advisable to walk alone down Mahatma Ghandi Road towards the city end in the evening, especially when you are a foreigner.

What can I say. It was perfect. Everything was big and comfortable. Fabulous stay. I'd very definitely go back. Very close to unshakable and the oceanfront promenade. Handy for buses. Great views from the rooftop bar.

A very nice backpackers with lots and lots of room to hang around, a big well equipped kitchen and clean bathroom facilities, but it was dead quiet. As a solo traveller I struggled to meet new people. There is a bar area upstairs but I rarely saw anyone there as well. The rooms have comfy beds and efficient ceiling fans...

Durban is dirty. Ugly. There's nothing to like about it. But somehow it works. Happy Hippo had a special atmosphere that got me to meet up with much more people than any other backpacker's hostel. I found amazing friends I will never forget. stuff was very nice as well

The beds were clean and we felt save at the Hippo. The reception was extraordinary helpfull, we planed and booked nearly half of our trip there. The bar upstairs is quite nice, but it can get very loud at weekends, what can bother Families or non partyinterestet travellers. They do laundry service (ZAR60). Unfortunately the free wi-fi is not that...

I read bad reviews about this before going, but figured a bar usually closes down at midnight and isn't usually too loud, especially if its located and part of a sleeping establishment. WRONG! Cons: 1)The very loud music and beats went on until the early hours of the morning, as did the 'clipclop' of heels which echo across the dancefloor...

Happy Hippos is an interesting place to stay with great staff. It used to be an old warehouse that they have converted into accommodation. On the first floor the whole centre space is given over to shared areas, with seating, tables and chairs. There is a good kitchen (although when we were there the other people did not keep it...

Loved the stay at this hostel. Great clean rooms, staff helping out (those at the reception could be friendlier - the boss comes sometimes around and is very kind though). On the rooftop is a bar that sometimes offers concerts. It is close to the ushaka marine center so the area is safe to walk over to the beach. Would...

Dear Julia F Thank you for all your kind words. We are really glad that you found us! In response to the internet; we do have a 10 MBPS line which unfortunately slows down when 20 people or more are on it; something that we cannot control as fibre optics have not reached our area yet. "only in Africa!" We...
