Old property with a lot of rules (felt like being at aunt's house). WIFI ? 100mb voucher and that's it. (very poor connection). Seriously?! Single beds stacked on each other - no chance to sit. And Durban-well...

There weren't many visitors during my one night stay, so I had a dorm room to myself. However, there were small lockers in the room (with electronic locks) to keep valuables locked-up. There was also a modest and clean kitchen. The lobby/lounge area was eclectic as it's full of art and touristy items that guests can purchase. The staff were...

Hello PNW Many thanx for your positive review. When we check people in we give them a map and show them what and where the to do things are in Durban. Together with that we explain and show the location of about 25 restaurants all in a 6 min walking distance from the lodge. Such a variety and selection could...

One of the best backpacker hostel we have been to. The owner is super helpful. We used a private double room with a shared bathroom and everything was clean and comfortable. There is a laundry place and a supermarket nearby.

This is one of the best backpackers I have ever used. It was very clean and tidy, comfortable, and homey. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast provided in the mornings was very filling with fresh fruit. I always felt safe entering and exiting the venue, and it's very close to Florida street and other shops and...

Hello Annastessia Thank you very much for the great review of Gibela. Those extras are what make us special. This all cost money and hence a slightly more than average bed night. We do pride ourselves in keeping the facilities spotless. Hope to see you back one your next travel to Durban.

Calm, organized, clean, useful guide on where more safe to walk in Durban and where less safe. Great breakfast. Convenient to supermarket and restaurants. Recommended. Internet available during specified hours. Quiet. Worth staying there when on Durban.

Hello Viajante We have upgraded our I-net to a 24 hour service, but is still limited to the common area around the pool and breakfast area. Good to hear that you had a safe and enjoyable walk about in Durban. Glad to hear you enjoyed the breakfast.

Morning Tumi Thanx for taking the time to write such a "refreshing" review. We do try and stretch the limits to satisfy our guests requirements and needs, but as you can imagine it's not always to everyone's satisfaction. I had a really nice stay at this hostel. Cosy and safe place. The guy at the reception was very helpful. Supermarket 100 m away. They sell nice African Art at the reception. Small pool. It didn't like it that you cannot lock the dorm room.

Hello Nadine We are pleased that you enjoyed a cosy stay at Gibela. We are on top of the security issue and provide a safe, comfortable stay. Private rooms can be locked but with dorms we find it becomes a bit noisy with 6 people locking and unlocking and locking themselves either in or out of the dorm. Hence we...

Elmar's been running the place ~14 years now (is what I heard). All the information...

TOP CHOICE - Lonely Planet 2012 "If this hostel (a tastefully converted 1950's Tuscan home) were a B&B, it would be described as 'boutique'. One of Durban's best hostels, it has sparkling surfaces and rooms neat enough to pass an army major's inspection. It even provides a continental breakfast- to be enjoyed in an attractive indoor-outdoor dining area."
