Gibela B&B is located in a safe area of Durban with good resraurants nearby. The owner of Gibela B&B was very kind and helped us to plan our day trip. There is a nice Shop within the B&B were we bought hand crafted cristmas gifts from the locals.

Thanx for the kind words. Being a backpackers lodge, but referred to as an B&B is a real compliment. We assist where we can to arrange excursions and plan / book accommodation ahead. Now a days not many travellers actually ask for assistance as they try to sort themselves out by surfing the net. Quite often the locals actually know...

Stayed two nights over the weekend, it was really quiet during my stay and the owner even gave me the weekday (and not the weekend) rate. Was struck by the effort the owner had put into the place relative to other backpackers by for example having shelves, a clothes rack and coat hangers in the dorm so that you can...

You had the calm before the storm, as the holiday season was super busy. It is very pleasing to read that you appreciated all the extras on offer at Gibela Backpackers Lodge. Most travellers just take it for granted and don't actually attach a "price tag" to what it takes / cost to offer the extras. We take pride on...

The Gibela Lodge is the perfect alternative to Tekweni Hostel, if you do not necessarely want to party every night. Nice, clean and quiet rooms and lovely outside area with swimmingpool where you can lie in the shade and surf the web. What else do you need! ;-)

We need more travellers like you. Kick back, relax and enjoy the pool area. Definitely not a party hostel here and all your positive remarks is what our guests are looking for. But then Florida road with endless restaurants, bars and cafes is just a short walk away. Happy travels !!

After we saw all the good reviews and recommendations, we booked one night at Gibela and it was such a disappointment...The room was cosy, though not very quite, the staff seemed to be annoyed that we were even there, and the breakfast was literally the worst we had in whole South Africa, and we had quite few breakfasts...We were happy...

Yet another one night wonder guest, who obviously didn't read or understand what previous reviewers wrote. I have said on multiple posts that Gibela and Durban is not a one night stopover. Especially if you have driven from Kruger Park (700km) and then heading of the next day to East London (600 km) totally exhausted from driving. A 2 hour...

The lodge is very centrally located and the airport shuttle drops you right at the door. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The property itself is small, but spacious, neat, clean, quiet and welcoming. My flight out was after check out but reception kindly stored my luggage until I was ready to leave later in the day. Excellent value...

Hello Michael From your review I take it you spent a few days at Gibela. What you have mentioned is exactly what Gibela is all about, central location, service orientated, well connected to public transport, clean and neat. Hope to see you back one day.

We stayed at Gibela for 5 nights and really enjoyed our stay. It is the cleanest hostel I have ever stayed at and the owner Elmar has clearly taken lots of care on the building and outdoor area. The breakfast was really good: toast with jam, cheese and peanut butter, excellent granola, fresh fruit and yoghurt. Elmar is an expert...

Greetings Laura WOW what more can we ask for. Thanx for the great review and recommendation. It's rewarding when we see and hear that guest take the time to appreciate and notice all the small things that make Gibela what it is. I often tell guest we are not the best "one night wonder stop-over". Durban has a lot to...

The owner is very welcoming. We got immediately a map of the city on which he indicated where to go or not to go. We were too early for check-in, but the owner let us already park the car and leave our lugage so we could visit the city already more easily. Breakfast was very nice: cereals, bread, jam, peanut...

We stayed here for two nights. The place was immaculate, that is just the owner's style. The breakfasts were continental but still quite delicious with cheese, bread, yogurt, cereal, juices, coffee, tea, and fruit. There was a good kitchen and several common areas to hang out. The Internet only works when the office is open, which means it is shut...

Hello Lucky for you, you stayed with us over the Valentines week-end and hence the cup cakes (but we do this ongoingly on special occasions). I always tell people you get what you pay for. A large group of us stayed at Gibela's for about 10 days and enjoyed our stay very much. The lodge is very beautiful, charming and welcoming. Morning Thank-you for taking the time to write such a thorough review. Hosting groups is always a challenge as their seem to be simultaneous "mass demand" on facilities. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
TOP CHOICE - Lonely Planet 2012 "If this hostel (a tastefully converted 1950's Tuscan home) were a B&B, it would be described as 'boutique'. One of Durban's best hostels, it has sparkling surfaces and rooms neat enough to pass an army major's inspection. It even provides a continental breakfast- to be enjoyed in an attractive indoor-outdoor dining area." Gibela is conveniently located in the safe, residential area of Morningside and within walking distance to the center of Durban’s entertainment life, Florida Road, where there are restaurants, cocktail bars, clubs and coffee shops galore. ... more   less
