We had a wonderful long weekend at Umkhumbi with our three young kids in the newly developed self catering chalets. Excellent accommodation in a beautiful sand forest setting. We walked and road bikes and enjoyed the amazing bird life and animals. Special birds including Neergards Sunbird and Woodward’s Batis. Missed the Narina Trogon, Green Malkoha and African Broadbill but will definitely return for another stay. Anton and Emma were great hosts and Anton’s reptile exhibition an eye opener and something we will all remember. Kids didn’t want to leave and neither did we!! Couldn’t recommend the place enough.
We had a great stay here. There are a number of trails on the property. I even had a close Nyala from the back deck. In the evening it is also possible to see a Galago (bush baby) at the feeding station outside the dining room. The room we had was comfortable and spacious. The kitchen was accomodating of special diets. The electricity was erratic, as is customary for this region, but they provide electric lanterns in each room. Sounds from the adjoining room might be heard.
Stayed here for a couple of nights on a recent birding trip. Had a wonderful time. They have several hiking trails on the property and the game reserve that abuts it allows guest to walk (not drive) on their roads and trails. Our host and everyone else was very friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious and had a large deck overlooking the forest. There is a very nice open-air bar/lounge on the second floor of the dining building. It is a pleasant place to have a sundowner while watching the sunset. The dining room served very nice meals and the wait staff were pleasant and fun to talk to
We stayed three nights and really enjoyed our time here. Everybody was really friendly and helpful, our room was spacious, clean and well presented. Nothing was too much trouble, especially where food was concerned and one of us is a very picky eater. Many thanks for the changes made to the menu each mealtime! The lodge has many lovely signposted trails which we explored with lots of bird life, red duiker and warthogs. We drove to Hulhluwe and Imfolozi park which is about 30 minutes away but had also booked a game drive through Umkhumbi who arranged for Pete to take us out for six hours. What an amazing day and one we wouldn't have had without their knowledge. Umkhumbi is also only and hour and a half away from St Lucia and the hippos. The only negative about this lodge is how few people were staying. It has a fantastic upstairs bar but there was only one other guest beside ourselves.…
We have just returned from an amazing 4 night stay at Umkhumbi Lodge where we were made to feel part of the family. Anton and Emma have a beautiful property with several spacious, clean and comfortable lodges, we stayed in a family lodge with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The upstairs bar has the most amazing views and is truly spectacular at sunset. We were able to use Umkhumbi as a base whilst we explored the area, visiting the Hippos in St Lucia, a guided walk around a local village and school, an elephant interaction, a Cheetah rehabilitation centre and a night time walk to find scorpions! The highlight for us was when Harriot took us for a guided walk around their reserve and we saw Nyala, Antelope and Wilderbeast, and we sat with the Giraffes! Harriot also runs a small re-wilding centre from Umkhumbi and whilst we were there a baby red Duiker had been brought in, my daughter was able to help bottle feed her which was just fantastic, an experience she will never forget. Thank you to all for making us feel so welcome and looking after us so well, I highly recommend a stay at Umkhumbi, you wont be disappointed! …
