We stopped over in this historic city and hotel of the colonial times. Which is well maintained. The rooms were clean and neat. The beds were very comfortable . Nicely situated in central town and museums if you are interested in them. The service was good

Stayed a night and this hotel in Hilton very nicely located in this town and close to main road, so very accessible . The hotel seems renovated/ well maintained with an old " European or British feel" Rooms are comfortable and quite simple. Very clean and convenient.

The main entrance of the Hotel was shocking from the main road. The Hotel is not part of the Protea Group but advertising still under the brand. The reception did show me the rooms and it was very modern. Loved the space. Stayed in room 111 and it was close to the garden. The BAR was open and services was...

I stayed here with some friends the night before the Comrades down run. The location was fantastic, only about 400m from the start line. The hotel supported competitors really well, putting on a (very) early breakfast and providing a little welcome gift with a bottle of energade and some fudge. As with other hotels in South Africa, they aren't good...

The hotel itself is good enough, reasonably sized rooms, clean and shared with the restaurant and car park with the police station across the road so it's very secure. However, it's central location there are no bars or restaurants locally so it was some watch of a surprise to find out that when I arrived 20:00 after a very long...

This is an amazing old hotel. It's been tastefully renovated throughout the entire hotel. The rooms are clean and well appointed, but don't offer in-room I tenet facilities for guests which is disappointing. The food is great and the service is good and friendly.

A lovely hotel with friendly staff in a wonderful central location in Pietermaritzburg. My room was excellent and I loved the breakfast. Just a shame the wifi is limited just to reception but I recommend it as a great place to stay.

My stay at the Protea Hotel Imperial surprised me in so many ways. This little beaut has so much history and classiness. Everything from the historical pictures on the walls to the 137 year old floors and elevator is just such a great experience. The staff and management are so friendly and nothing is ever too much of an effort...

Located in the heart of Pietermaritzburg, Imperial Hotel is filled with charm and classic elegance. The Prince Imperial of France, Napoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph Bonaparte, only son of the Emperor Napoleon III and the Empress Eugénie, graced this hotel with his presence in April 1879 and it was duly renamed in his honour. Built in 1878, it is an absolutely gem in the 'City of Choice'- Pietermaritzburg, which is also the capital of KwaZulu Natal. Within walking distance to the Provincial Parliament, Government head offices and the Natal Railway Museum, the hotel is ideal for both corporate and leisure travellers. The hotel is 103 km away from the Durban International Airport and 8 km from Pietermaritzburg Airport. Imperial Hotel, with its historical ambience and tranquil flare, offers 70 air-conditioned and en-suite bathrooms with a choice of a single or double-bedded room and family suites. For the convenience of our guests each room has in-room facilities that include a satellite TV, telephone and tea/coffee facilities. Secure parking is available on the premises at no additional fee. 8 state-of-the-art conference venues are available, seating up to 300 delegates, fully equipped with all the necessary equipment including broadband wireless internet access in the Courtyard and foyer areas. The Garden Room restaurant is open from 06h30 to 22h30 serving mouth-watering buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. Relax with friends or meet the locals at the Woodhouse Bar which is open from 11h00 to 23h00. Pietermaritzburg is not only a historic area but there are numerous exhilarating events that take place in this area. The city gives start to the Duzi canoeing event, the Comrades Marathon, Midmar Mile Swimming competition and the Amashovashova Cycling Race. In winter, guests can witness snow in the midland areas such as Bulwer, Underberg and Drakensberg. For some Kasi (South African townships) flavour, guests can visit Madlula's Place. ... more   less
