In a city renowned for hospitality, Derwent House stands out as one of Cape Town's leading boutique guesthouses. Located in the heart of the vibrant Tamboerskloof/Gardens neighbourhood, this small hotel combines historic charm, contemporary Afro-chic style and all mod-cons for a uniquely Capetonian blend of ambience, warmth, and comfort. Our wonderful team completes the picture -- we go the extra mile for you and our guests leave as friends. We love colour and celebrate African design - you'll find it everywhere. But when it comes to the basics - like breakfast, bedding, showers, climate control, Wi-fi or news from home - we don't compromise so you don't have to. At Derwent House, you're steps away from the hustle and buzz of Kloof Street, with its collection of superb restaurants, bars and trendy boutiques--and just a few further to the nightlife hub of Bree and Long Streets. Yet just a short car journey from the Table Mountain cable car, the beaches of Clifton or Camp's Bay, and the V&A Waterfront. There's nowhere more central -- but come and see for yourself. We're waiting for you!

Detailed Reviews
This hotel is the perfect antidote to large and impersonal accommodation.
The rooms and social spaces are designed beautifully and the bedroom has everything you need. Ours had a great view over the pool and was really comfortable. The breakfasts were spot on - freshly cooked and omelettes the size of frisbees. The cakes and coffee/tea in the afternoon is a great touch and the location (really close to the base station at Table Mountain, just a short walk from a range of really great restaurants and in very quiet and safe residential area) is superb.
The thing that makes this Hotel stand out is the care and attention given by Luca, Candice, Future and the team to making each guest's experience as memorable as possible. They really are interested in your plans for the day and have a million suggestions as to how to make them better. They're incredibly well connected and when the recommend a restaurant or a trip you know they've been on it. Absolutely nothing is too much trouble.
We'll definitely be returning.

Response from Derwent owners, Owner at Derwent House Boutique Hotel

Dear Steve1810H, Your thoughtful and generous review of your stay with us really made everyone's day at Derwent House -- just as we were preparing to close the hotel in preparation for lockdown last month. A wonderful accolade from wonderful guests -- and a huge boost just when we need it most! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with other travellers in this forum. You've touched on lots of little things that we've always felt were important for guests: giving first-hand recommendations of experiences, restaurants, sights and services, for example. We all spend our time off trying new things, testing new restaurants (it's a tough job, but someone has to do it 😋) and generally making sure that we're up to speed with what's new and worthwhile or tried and tested around town. But indeed it's our amazing team that really makes the Derwent House difference--special thanks to you for this kind shout-out to our managers by name. We're delighted to hear that you'll be back again -- and we'll definitely be here for you with a better-than-ever Derwent House when you get here! Thanks again for your lovely review, Anahid & the Derwent team

What a superb hotel, quirky, friendly comfortable and like a home away from home.
We arrived in the morning after an overnight flight from London and were immediately offered coffee and breakfast (don't miss the breakfasts, they're great!). We were then given a "refresh room" so we could shower and change before heading out to see Cape Town. On our return our room had not only been prepared, it was decorated to celebrate our birthdays including balloons, champagne and chocolates, a lovely and unexpected personal touch, typical of this hotel.
The room is huge and very comfortable with a king size bed, huge wetroom, including shower and bath and a massive balcony with superb views. The hotel itself is comfortable and homely, with lovely, vibrant decor and some really attractive personal touches, it's more like staying in a friend's home. The staff are so friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. They advise on things to do and the best times to go, book restaurants and private tours for you and even park your car!
The breakfasts are great and there's an honesty bar that includes beers, wine, soft drinks and cocktails, lovely cake (complimentary) in the afternoons and tea and coffee all day and night. There are comfortable lounges and a great outdoor area and pool. The staff will recommend and even book restaurants for you and there are dozens within a 10 minute safe walk of here. The recommendations have ben great so far.
Overall can't fault Derwent House and would definitely recommend this as your base to explore Cape Town

What a wonderful, comprehensive recommendation, Pete H--we're overjoyed that all is to your liking here, and definitely, as discussed: hope that we've set the bar very high for the rest of your travels in South Africa! What fortuitous serendipity that your [excellent!] agent booked you with us -- sharing a passion for colour and pizazz as we do, so that you feel right at home. It's a real honour to host you for this special trip with so much to celebrate, so I'm thrilled that we've helped make it memorable 💘🎉🍾. Yet, while comfy beds, a good shower, balcony and fun design are great, it's definitely our amazing team that make Derwent House special--and it's feedback from guests like you that have propelled us to the top of the TripAdvisor rankings for service in South Africa. But we do love to help keen guests like you two discover the city that we know . . . It's really a pleasure. Thank you so much for this generous and detailed review. You've covered lots of things that we've worked hard to get just right, so its truly gratifying to get "live" feedback like yours. We're always looking for ways to improve, however, so come back soon to see what else we have in store for you! And wish you safe and happy onward travels meanwhile . . . from the whole team, all our very best wishes and warm regards, Anahid & the team

I loved this hotel. It is located in a lovely neighborhood just off Kloof St with its good selection of restaurants and otherwise in easy Uber (or walking) distance of most major attractions. It is quite small and personal, but also well run and professional. The staff was excellent in all respects, warm and friendly, but also helpful and informative. Rooms were very comfortable and the common areas attractive and well kept.
WiFi was a bit slow, but I found that to be more or less the case with both cell and WiFi service throughout the city. There are sufficient outlets but if you are coming from overseas bring a good assortment of UK and European adapters and long cords - or of course SA adapters if you happen to have them. There are all 3 types in the room, but if you have several things to plug in it gets a bit tricky as to locating them all!
The buffet breakfast is copious and delicious - so much so that I never managed to try the daily special cooked portion of the breakfast offering. The tea time snacks were also good.
I was very pleased with my choice of Derwent House and look forward to a return to both the city and the hotel.

Many thanks, MBKNJ -- we loved hosting you too! You were so well organised and independent, we weren't sure what more we could do for you, so it's great to hear that you felt comfortable and well-looked after. What a shame you missed the hot breakfast! Definitely something to come back for: beyond the daily selection, we also have a daily special of varied, interesting and exotic choices, curated from our travels around the world . . . Next time! I do promise you faster Wifi next time as well: you are correct, the whole country suffered constrained bandwidth from the beginning of February when a major trans-oceanic telecommunications cable supplying South Africa was damaged. Weather conditions apparently restricted the repair vessels, so regular speeds and service has only just been restored this week. We do have high-speed unlimited fibre internet, so speed is normally very good! Thanks for the tip about adapters -- of course, you are right that two outlets is not really enough these days. We'll ensure that there is always a multi-plug available in the room and look at replacing some more of our wall outlets with international adapted-outlets. We too look forward to welcoming you back -- and tempting you with a hot breakfast this time!?? Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience with us here. We really appreciate it and so do other travellers. Warm greetings from the whole team, Anahid

What a wonderful experience we had at the Derwent house. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we said our goodbyes, the staff (Future, Candace, Luca, Dorcas, Benathi, etc etc!) at Derwent house went above and beyond to make our stay in spectacular Cape Town even more memorable. And for that, we are so grateful! We even had an opportunity to chat with the owners who made an appearance on 2 of our 5 days there. The decor is colorful, comfortable and cozy. The art is amazing and care is taken to feature local artists and handicrafts. Every detail is thought out and many of the items we encountered through out the hotel were available for purchase from their little curio behind the front desk. What a treat to do all my shopping from the comfort of the hotel!
Derwent House is tucked away off Kloof Street, the location was perfect. We were able to walk to many places safely and we appreciated this very much. Close to restaurants and small shops and a 20 or so minutes walk to Long Street (far too loud and touristy there!) and about 28 minutes to BoKaap. The rooms are well appointed and quiet and the views of Table Mountain from our little balcony made the room extra special.
Staff was helpful without being intrusive and made sure all our plans were plotted out. Tickets arranged, calls and reservations made. Not a single level of service was overlooked.
Daily breakfast was exceptional and the selection of coffee, tea, wines, liqueurs, the gin bar and baked goods every afternoon made us feel as if we were at home vs at a hotel. My favorite being greeted with Amarula Creme when we returned home from dinner.
We highly recommend Derwent House and have already shared our experiences there with many world traveling friends who are excited for their visit.
Thank you again for making our stay so wonderful! It may be a while before we return to Cape Town, but when we do, we will most certainly stay here.

This boutique upmarket guest house is set in a residential street close to the main attractions of Cape Town. The stle of decor is eclectic African - colourful and vibrant
An inner courtyard has a sparkling swimming pool along with a hot tub
The property was spotlessly clean, and all Co-Vid protocol were being observed, but without feeking in any way restrictive.
Meticulous attention to detail, an eagerness to please, and luxurious environment make this the ideal base for a trip to Cape Town. The staff all go out of their way to ensure guests are happy, helping with restaurant reservations, co-vid tests, and shopping advice.
Would rather have kept this luxury guest house as my personal secret, but the staff and management deserve to be praised on a more public platform !

Dear capetravller, We're very grateful that you decided to share -- but promise to always find space for you when you're here 😊! Your latest booking with us was the very best accolade of all. Your comments on managing the fine line between hygiene and hospitality are especially welcome. It's a very difficult balance to achieve and we've worked long and hard on our protocols and standards to ensure they are maximally effective yet minimally invasive. So it's really gratifying to hear from a very experienced and discerning traveller like yourself that we're succeeding. You've hit the nail on the head, however, that it's our amazing team that make the Derwent House "difference." And it's recognition like yours that has earned us top spot on Tripadvisor for service in South Africa for the last 5 years running. Not to mention: giving every single one of us a huge motivational boost today. Thank you so much for that! And thanks for deciding to share--we really appreciate it! Best regards, Anahid & Luca

Where to start?! without doubt, the most exceptional hotel experience we have ever encountered. Derwent House is a real 'home from home' and you are made to feel so wonderfully welcome by Anahid, Luca, Patience and the team from the moment you step through the door.
The rooms are very well appointed, quiet, equipped with everything you could possibly need. The added 'extras' like the turn-down service, the night stand water and the chocolates are lovely touches.
The booking process was easy and communication was faultless as were the many recommendations provided by the hotel for trips and restaurants, all were fantastic.
The hotel itself is beautifully decorated and the food and drink.. well.. let's just say we certainly did not need to eat in between Derwent's delicious breakfast and supper.
The location is great, easy to walk into town (20 mins) and we even walked over to Camps Bay and beyond in less than an hour. Great bars and restaurants are 5/10 minutes walk and you can uber everywhere in the city for all of £2 per journey.
We also cannot thank the team at Derwent enough for making a Christmas and New Years spent away from home so magical, again, all the little extras were so gratefully received and we thoroughly getting to know the other guests (pretty much all of which were returning which says everything you need to know).
We cannot wait to return this Christmas/New Year this year!

Wow, AA195 -- this awesome review really made our day today: great big heartfelt thanks from the entire team 🥰! "Flawless" and "the most exceptional hotel experience [ever]" are accolades we only imagine -- so you've made our dreams come true. Most meaningful is your sincerity of feeling welcome, comfortable and at home with us -- that's truly what we aspire to offer guests. We know that it's not always easy to be away from home for the holidays, so we want to make sure that you're not homesick at all and enjoy a different style of holiday celebration in sunny Cape Town! It was only a pleasure to help with your Christmas and new year plans -- lots of visitors are caught out by how busy Cape Town is at this time of year, so we've learned to keep a few provisional bookings with our neighbourhood favourites just in case . . . Thanks for your detailed feedback on how much you appreciated some of our little touches: we do believe it's the little things that make up the big picture. And Arthi personally thanks you for all your generous compliments about her breakfasts while you were here--so kind and sweet and always very much appreciated by our fabulous team. It was wonderful to see you make friends with our "regular crew" -- we're delighted that you're joining the club! There's no greater endorsement than a return booking and we're looking forward to celebrating again with you this year. Meanwhile, you have all our very best wishes from the whole team for a happy and successful year! Anahid

We can't say enough about our stay with the Derwent House. When we first booked this hotel, Anahid reached out to offer information on things we should do while visiting Cape Town. When we arrived the team was extremly friendly and welcoming. Luca was so helpful in giving us tips on local markets and connecting us to an affordable driver for our longer distance activities. Nasif was an amazing driver. Our room at the hotel was amazing. It was bright, clean and made us feel like we were at home while on vacation. The staff kept it clean for us each day and left information about events/activities happening for following day that we could check out. The breakfast was great. We loved the night staff they always made sure we went to our rooms with anything we needed. The location of this hotel amazing. Kloof street is just down the street and has a number of great restaurants to check out day or night. We got some great recomendations from the staff at Derwent House and were never disapointed. We had an amazing view of Table Top Mountain during the day and at night. The owners Anahid and Armin are amazing. They treated us like family and gave us amazing winery and food recomendations. This was our favorite place we stayed in Cape Town and will be recomending this hotel to all our friends and family. We can't wait for our next visit. Jason and I Thank you all for everything!

Dear Michelle & Jason, Such a lovely Christmas gift for the whole team to read your wonderful review! Thank you so much for taking the time to post such a detailed report on your experience with us . . . To earn your vote as your "favorite place" is a tremendous accolade and one we treasure with humility and gratitude. It's our mission to try and help guests make the absolute most of their visit to Cape Town by sharing advice, insider tips and general support, so it's great to hear that we achieved this for you. I'm so pleased -- at this very busy time of year -- that we were able to make arrangements for your spontaneous Peninsula tour with Nassief, and to get you into some of our favourite restaurants in the neighbourhood. You're so right: we are very fortunate to have many of the best bars and restaurants in town along Kloof Street at our doorstep--makes our job easier 😉. You two did indeed become part of our Derwent family during your stay. It was really such a pleasure to get to know you and we too look forward to your next visit. We promise you an even better Derwent House when you come back next time -- and we promise to take great care of your friends and family meanwhile! We wish you a wonderful 2023! Warm Cape Town greetings from the whole team, Anahid & Armin

I cannot recommend a cuter and accommodating boutique hotel anywhere in the world more than Derwent House. The entire team at this hotel was top notch and extremely hospitable. Breakfast was amazing, they had laundry service (which was really helpful when coming off of safari) and the views + location are unbeatable.
We landed in Cape Town after being off the grid and on safari for over a week. COVID-19 really accelerated while we on safari and without our knowledge. We arrived at Derwent with the news of our cancelled flights back to the US and uncertainty as to how and when we might be able to leave South Africa. Their team was extremely accommodating and let us know that we had a place to stay for as long as we needed. They did research for us to find out which local restaurants were still operating so that we had places to eat dinner. It was amazing to see a team come together to accommodate all of their guests on the brink of a crisis while likely also dealing with their own fears and anxieties. I highly recommend a stay at the Derwent House during your next vacation. Big hugs and thanks!

Wow, Juliana N - what an accolade from wonderful human beings! We can't thank you enough for your kind and generous appreciation of our team -- when your own special honeymoon journey was so overshadowed by this global crisis. We're happy to have been able to soften the blow of the fast-moving events around the pandemic to which you arrived blissfully ignorant. Very happy to hear that you made it home safely and are keeping well. Corona virus aside, we do take honeymoons very seriously: it's a big responsibility to make sure that all is perfect for this special start of your lives together . . . Making memories that you'll keep forever. We're delighted that we were able to help you celebrate appropriately in spite of the circumstances. And we did want to be sure that you were able to experience Cape Town's renowned culinary scene to the max, even with some shortened hours and curtailed service---really pleased that we could help you eat well 😋. Your lovely review means such a lot in these trying times. You have the heartfelt gratitude of every one of the team for taking the time to recognise their efforts to make you feel safe and comfortable in this forum. Thanks for the warm recommendation and we hope that you two will be back again -- perhaps an anniversary?? -- to experience our beautiful city in more "normal" circumstances. We promise to be here for you when you do! Please stay safe and well meanwhile. Very best regards from Cape Town from everyone, Anahid

+1
Exceptionally well run, beautiful boutique hotel within easy walking distance of the many restaurants on Kloof Street and conveniently located to enjoy everything Cape Town has to offer. The public areas are spotless, beautifully decorated with the feel of a large comfortable home offering a splendid breakfast and an "honor system" bar to help yourself to snacks and a terrific selection of local wines and spirits. Our room was again spotless, very comfortable and well designed with enough space to work when we needed to use our laptops. The pool offers striking views of Table Mountain and the terrace is the perfect spot for cocktails as the sun goes down!! However, what makes this hotel special is the team, they act like owners, know what they are doing and are ready to help with anything. We were sad to leave Luca, Patience and the whole gang and look forward to staying here again.

Thank you so much for this, andrewpI4663GT! You've touched on so many key points of our service philosophy and guest experience aspirations -- it's always lovely to hear back from guests for whom we've delivered, especially discerning travellers like yourselves. While our location so close to the many attractions of Kloof Street is fortuitous (especially glad that you loved our favourite neighbourhood tip, the Black Sheep), here in the hotel, our whole team do truly go the extra mile to ensure that your visit is the absolute best it can be--whether in the content and quality of breakfast, the afternoon tea spread, wine and craft beer selection in the Honesty bar, or the cleanliness of your room. Coming from an experienced hospitality professional like yourself, your commendation is especially meaningful and very much appreciated by all of us. We too look forward to welcoming you back again on a future visit -- and have no doubt that the African bug has bitten 🐘! Still so many photo opportunities await . . . See you next time! All the very best to you both from sunny Cape Town, Anahid, Armin & the Derwent team

We recently stayed at the Derwent House while on our honeymoon. In its entirety, it was the best hotel I have stayed at. Each day starts with a full breakfast spread of fresh juice, oatmeal, pancakes, yogurt and more. The staff is there to greet you as they offer to make you a coffee or tea and ask you about your plans for the day to see if they can offer any advice.
While you're out visiting Cape Town, housekeeping will tidy up your room and leave you a warm water bladder to have you coming back to a cozy bed. Before making your way up to your room, you're greeted at the door with a nightcap on the house with a warm smile from the staff asking about your day.
In addition to some chocolate treats you'll get on your bed, the staff also prepares a suggestion of activities to do for the following day with detailed descriptions.
It's also worth noting the unique layout of the hotel. It feels more like you're in a large house as the common area and dining area invites guests to mingle. We made friends with visitors from Texas, New York, France, London and Australia. The decor and layout felt homey while having some lounge-like feelings with the deck, pool and hottub.
Last, and most important, is the people that work at Derwent House. Always with a big smile on their face, their genuine interest in you as a guest stood out more than any other hospitality experience I've had. We found ourselves several times in deep conversation with them.
This stay is the complete experience, near great restaurants, and at a very reasonable price. Cannot recommend this place enough to provide a great experience.
P.S. Ask them about day tours - they set us up with 2 that were amazing.

Wow, Kevin R -- what an incredible endorsement: you've really made our day! Can't get better than "best hotel . . ." (Although we won't stop trying 🥰). And for all of us, best of all in your wonderfully detailed review of your stay is the intimacy and ambience of the hotel that made you feel at home and even encouraged you to make some new friends along the way . . . This is truly what we aspire to in our hospitality journey and it's so gratifying to get such lovely feedback from guests that we're getting it right. We promise you an even better Derwent House next time! Warm greetings and grateful thanks from the whole team, Anahid

Hi Teba2020,
Yes, definitely: if we are able, we'll always offer you a late checkout - but if not, you're definitely most welcome to leave your luggage with us and we'll make a plan to offer you a "refresh" room before departure.
Let me know if you have any further questions!
Best regards,
Anahid
The room we booked had a very comfy king bed.
Hello,
we never felt unsafe around the hotel. It's a residential area and the hotel has a security guard outside during the night. The walk from the hotel to the restaurants on Kloof Nek Road and Buitengragt Street is short. And Uber is cheap if you feel unsafe.
Best wishes
