After flying into San Jose and driving down the coast highway 34 to Dominical, we made the trek into Rio Magnolia for the first three nights of a 10-night trip to CR. After the... interesting drive in from the road (about 15 minutes, and there was some doubt our little Daihatsu 4WD would survive), we checked in and went to...

We spent 5 nights here on a honeymoon package (only 37 years late). We'd echo all the enthusiastic comments below; the location, accommodation, food and service are all outstanding. We particularly enjoyed the house party atmosphere, with guests dining together and enjoying fascinating conversation. We thought Simon the house manager was extremely professional. We'd recommend the birding tour, although we...

This place is truly one of a kind -- in a very good way. The lodge is sited on the side of a mountain with a million dollar view over the surrounding forest towards the sea. John and Maureen built the lodge from scratch. They did a wonderful job of it. It's first rate. And -- being good Canadian engineers...

This hotel is amazing! We became cloud sleepers because on a regular basis, the lodge was enveloped in clouds. The attention of the owners, Maureen and John, to insuring you have a great stay is unmatched, mention a preference and they immediately try to accommodate it. We had the most restful stay ever. Just relaxing on the veranda you will...

Our week at the Rio Magnolia was magical. The extensive property provided us with a variety of experiences - from hiking stunning jungle trails (thanks to Eliecer, the property foreman, for acting as a guide on one of many walks), to learning about their coffee production, to viewing the hydro generating system. The pool was a fabulous way to end...

We totally enjoyed our stay at the Rio Magnolia! It's a little hard to get to, and when they say you need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to negotiate the road that goes there, they're serious. We arrived after dark, and the owners arranged for someone to guide us in from the main road...and though we had missed the regular serving...

Palomo takes his job as guide very seriously :). We are glad you enjoyed your stay in Mono Congo. We hope you will come back and visit again. Thanks so much for bringing the many school supplies for the students at our local elementary school. Rio Magnolia collects school supplies annually from our generous guests. It really helps out the...

We recently stayed at the Rio Magnolia lodge. What an extraordinary property! From the moment we started to drive onto the grounds we knew we were in for something truly special. The Property is expansive with abundant wildlife. The owners Maureen and John, and staff were welcoming, gracious and always available and accommodating in every way. Outstanding service! We are glad you enjoyed your stay and the birding tour by Andres. It was a pleasure meeting the four of you. When guests would like an onsite birding/naturalist tour it is best to book it in advance. The cost is $140 and tour runs from 6 am to 2 pm.

Our few days at Rio Magnolia in April were a dream. The setting, the accommodation, the food, the hosts, all were just perfect. We truly had the feeling of staying with friends who had a large home. We strongly encouraged a visit to everyone going to Costa Rica.

The somewhat harrowing drive from the main San Isidro-Dominical road requires the right vehicle and the right attitude, but is amply rewarded by the setting of this upscale, secluded yet homey lodge. Perfect for birders, hikers, sustainability fans, relaxers and gourmets, with a spectacular natural water slide for those requiring a little more adrenaline. Those in search of still more...

Thank you for such a nice review. The information about the road in from the highway (6 km) is extremely useful. Four wheel drive is necessary. Eliecer, our foreman, is very happy to drive guests in or lead them in from Soda Elizabeth located in San Cristobal. Also, cars can be parked there. It is best to arrive in the...

From the moment we reached Rio Magnolia, we knew this was going to be a vacation to remember. Between the green vista views to the lovely ecolodge, the tasty, local food that all family members enjoyed to the hammock, we couldn't have asked for anything better. The accommodating hosts arranged two off site excursions (horseback riding to waterfalls and zip-lining...
