We arrived by boat after an enjoyable transfer with the opportunity to see more of this relatively unspoilt area. The hotel is relaxed and welcoming. We were shown to our bungalow accommodation which had a great view over the water. The bungalow was clean and spacious with a good bathroom. Unfortunately it lacked air conditioning and a fridge which we certainly would have liked given the weather, we clearly missed these points when booking. Everyone is on full board and receives the same food (although we were asked if we were vegetarian when we arrived so assume this is catered for). The meals were good and service was prompt - too prompt on some occasions and we were still chewing one course when the plate was whisked away and replaced by the next. The meal service times were inflexible which we appreciated meant the food was freshly served but it didn't make meal times very relaxing. During our stay we went on the national park tour which was excellent and the snorkelling which again was very good but we would have liked the opportunity to explore at our own pace instead of swimming as one group. All in all a very enjoyable stay.

We really enjoyed our time here. Of all the places we stayed the food was the best (hope you have the chocolate brownie) as were the staff who were all lovely. You feel wrapped in a little bubble away from it all.

We had room 1 which was air conditioned which was good but it was above the kitchen so you could hear them get ready for breakfast. This is okay if you have an early start. In fairness, when I mentioned it to the manager it was quieter the next day. Wish we had paid for an air conditioned cabin. We really liked that they leave the tea, coffee and biscuits out so you can help yourself at any time of the day.

We got into a lovely routine of getting back after a trip in the morning, by the pool in the afternoon,(if you can get one of the few sun beds) get ready about 5pm ready for happy hour and then the evening meal. As everyone has said the day shifts so by 8.15 if you are still in the restaurant area you will be the last up! We were very lucky as we met a fantastic couple from Belgium who we got on with really well so spent many a happy hour chatting to and laughing with them every meal.

We had a walk into the village one morning (about 25 minutes) and it is pleasant with the beach on your right. Not a lot to see ( a couple of supermarkets) but we had a drink in a lovely cafe where they had put out food to attract the birds.

This hotel is a good place to stay at Drake Bay. It's right next to the coast and a river, and it's surrounded by nature. The rooms are good, nothing fancy. I chose a room with AC, and it worked like a charm. It also had hot shower water if you needed it. Drinking water was readily available everywhere and the staff is very attentive, both in person and email. The food is pretty good, nothing fancy, and you don't get much choice. The exception was dinner, which was restaurant quality (but also limited choice). It's very much worth the cost, I think.

I chose this hotel because of the diving center based off of it. The area is fantastic for diving, and the tour team was wonderful. I really loved my experience diving there. There are numerous other activities you can do, but I didn't have time for them.

One drawback of this hotel is that it's a bit far from town, about 30 mins walking. If you don't have a car it's a major inconvenience, and walking around at night is nearly impossible due to limited outside lighting. You can book a car to move you around, but it's not very convenient.

My wife and I stayed in the Bungalow for 3 nights and did the San Pedrillo and Sirena Ranger Station tours in Corcovado and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The boat ride from Sierpe to Pirate Cove was a great experience. It was about an hour with half on the River and half in the ocean. A little bumpy, but very scenic. This is a fast boat ride, so don’t expect a tour style ride.

The bungalow was very nice with chairs and a hammock on the porch. Shower was Luke-warm, but refreshing after a long day in the sun. There is no A/C in the bungalow, but the ceiling fan was plenty for this time of year. They had a pool, access to a small fresh water lagoon, and the beach. Kayaks were available for the lagoon and we saw monkeys, scarlet macaws, and tapir tracks all on the property.

Of the tours, I recommend the San Pedrillo Tour over the Sirena tour. We did see more wildlife at Sirena, but the overall feel is very touristy. We receive more information about park conservation efforts, wildlife info, and just an overall greater appreciation for the diversity in the park at San Pedrillo. Also, you get to swim in the river near a waterfall on the San Pedrillo hike, which was much needed with how hot and humid it was.

Be prepared that Pirate Cove is 25-30min walk from the town of Drake Bay, so we recommend having meals included. The food was fantastic, coffee all day, and they had a bar with a good variety of drinks. The kitchen staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating to vegetarians. The kitchen even shared some recipes with my wife.

Highly recommend this place if you are looking for a relaxing spot following your adventures in the Osa Peninsula area. It is not super touristy, and allows you to appreciate the easy going life-style in the area.

We had an excellent stay at this hotel.

Super friendly and helpful staff. We particularly enjoyed chatting with Emanuel, the bartender. He was very professional and served the best drinks. While people sat at the pool, he often brought us cold water and sometimes even served fruit to us. We did not ask for this but it was appreciated and very considerate of him to do this.

We stayed in a bungalow cabin deluxe room and this had the most amazing view we’ve ever had anywhere. Big balcony too!

The staff are constantly cleaning and are helpful with any concerns or questions we had.

Meals were delicious and portions were plentiful.

We were right on the beautiful, warm water beach and loved our time in the water.

We highly recommend this amazing hotel!

We took the Canó Island snorkelling tour and the Corcovado Park tour. Both were wonderful.

Drake Bay is a must see and Pirate Cove is an amazing hotel.

While we decided to make the drive to Pirates Cove versus taking the boat, we made it fine and in the end we were glad to have our vehicle since we were able to drive and visit many little bars and restaurants a short drive from Pirates Cove. The facility was good not great. WiFi was ok at the restaurant area but non existent in our room. Upon our arrival we were not greeted with any enthusiasm or excitement but rather a ho-hum attitude. The food was just okay and we were somewhat disappointed because some of the reviews stated the food was good. I will say the security-maintenance guy (Primo) was a deluge and would do anything you needed or asked. The dive people (boat and guide) were excellent and made sure all went well. Thanks Wilson!! All in all I would rate our stay an average 3 stars or so.

We stayed here in 2010 and always wanted to return. We were not disappointed. It is less primitive than it was … now with spacious air conditioned cabins (at least the deluxe are). We often sat on the deck and watched and listened to birds along the river. The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful, and there is an ever changing assortment of other guests to share travel stories with and with whom we engaged in various guided tours. They arranged an exceptional bird watch for us with a local expert (Neyer), and a staff member (Abraham) led us in a fantastic snorkel at Cano Island. We also did an exciting hike (sirena station) at Corcovado National Park. The only suggestion I would make is make sure you get all the details of each excursion. We were taken by surprise that there is food available in Corcovado, and you may need cash, since the credit card machine doesn’t always work. Although you may be told it’s a 1 hr boat ride to the park, it can also be closer to two if they stop to pick up other hikers along the way. Since all landings are wet, wear appropriate clothes for that and sturdy shoes or boots for hiking.
Do yourself a favor and take the Sierpe River ferry down the river from Sierpe. One “captain” took us through a very cool mangrove swamp and stopped to watch some spider monkeys in trees along the shore.
If you rely on wifi….the speed was usually less than 1 mbps …only a problem if you can’t untether. It makes it very difficult if you have to, for example, check on your house back home. Speed via verizon was also quite slow. We managed and, yes, it was worth it for a great experience.
The meals at Pirate Cove are quite good.

A great choice for anyone wanting to see this part of Costa Rica without the crowds. I’d recommend full board; their food quality is excellent (and they catered to our dietary needs). If you chose not to full board we aware that the nearest restaurants are quite a distance away. Their inclusive trips were brilliant- we chose to snorkel on Cano Island (a 40 min boat ride away) and swam with turtles. Our second trip to Corcovado Park was also excellent; we saw a lot of wildlife with a very informative and helpful guide. Be aware that Corcovado is ONLY accessible with a licensed guide and the numbers allowed per day in the park are very limited (I think around 100?) Both trips are shown as “morning” but in fact take much of the day (both are early starts around 6am and return around 2pm). The lodge has several trees in the front that scarlet macaws visit every day- a real bonus.
NOTE Not mentioned in any literature is the fact that the hotel does not have a jetty; you will need to wade through the sea to get to / from the lodge, so dress accordingly.

Pirates cove is a nice hotel in Drake and more rustic but perfect for us as we were seeking simple, green, and out close to the wild. Rooms were ample and clean and we opted to spend a little more for the A/C we used rarely during our February stay. Staff were friendly, spoke english, and very helpful. Definitely things are laid back in Drake and definitely a very remote location which is what we wanted. The food was plentiful and tasty and being an all inclusive was great as the town of Drake is very small rustic town with limited choices so not having to think about food was great. Offered gluten free options for my wife, just let them know if you have special food needs ahead of time. The 1 hour boat ride to the hotel from Sierpe is definitely a unique experience! When they said 'wet' exit they weren't kidding.....no dock at hotel so yes you have to step out in ~12" of water, surf splashing, onto the beach which definitely added to the experience, so bring your hiking or water sandals. Definitely would recommend but if you're looking for plush then you shouldnt' be coming to Drake at all. If you're looking for a more wild and natural experience in a small very rural Costa Rica town this is you're place. The front desk help arrange extra excursions so don't worry about filling your schedule before you get there other than perhaps the N.Park for which I'd recommend a private tour if you can afford to get further away from the crowds and do more remote hiking.. Snorkling from beach at hotel was poor visibility so had to take island tour for that....but we had a wonderful 3 day stay and experience things we'll never forget. If you're a diver there is a dive shop/service on site. RECOMMEND.

We had a delux cabin. It was nice and a beautiful view from the big balcony. It was a bit dark, especially in the bathroom.
The pool area is very small and not very welcoming. Leftover snacks from the day before were not removed.
Staff was in generel friendly and helpful.
The bar was fine. But after dinner is served at 6 pm, everything is closed down at 7 pm.
One evening, the city had a power cut at 8PM, but no information was given to any guests. The staff has left the reception and no one could help, e.g. support with a flash light. We wandered around a completely dark and empty lodge, trying to find someone.
Lunch and dinner are okay. Breakfast is not good at all. It is a buffet with really poor hygiene. Flies everywhere, also under the lits to the food. Food is left for a long time with no cooling.

Response from Caño Divers, General Manager at Pirate Cove
Responded 17 Apr 2024
Good morning Marianne, We are sorry that you couldn´t enjoy Hotel Pirate Cove. The deluxe cabin are our bets rooms , they have a big glass door with curtains, you need to open the curtains in order to let the light enter to the room. In the web page are the pictures of the pool, it is small, we are a small hotel. Also we have the times in our web page about the bar, dinning room. The receptionis is until 7:30 p.m but always there is a guard in the hotel, the hotel never is alone. The problems with the electricity is our of our hands, we are in the jungle and sometimes it hapends. There are not flies, the insects are bees atractive for the fruits, but all the food is covered. Normally the people eat breakfast at the same time because the tourist normally go to the tours, then we don´t need to cooling the fruits. The customers eat very fast and we put new fruit.
