Since it was founded in 1985, Drake Bay Wilderness Resort has continued to be a family run business. Our focus has been to take good care of our guests so that they'll feel right at home. We try to be as flexible as possible, taking into consideration people´s needs and we do our very best to fulfill special requests. For instance, we will prepare meals for special diets. Furthermore, the hotel is situated in one of the most beautiful locations in the area. It has large open areas with a bounty of beautiful flowers, tropical plants, big mango trees, and beach almond trees that attract the raucous macaws. The property gives you the feel of being in a private island since the river flows along the backside of the property and the whole front side meets the ocean. In addition to this, most visitors come to us by boat and the access by land to the hotel is a small path, unreachable by car, that is submerged in a jungle. Best of all, there is a paradise like view of the bay and ocean, reflecting the deep blue sky and, beyond that, hills bound in lush forests. We offer all sorts of extras that help make our guests' stay more comfortable and enjoyable. For example, we include a full laundry service. Kayaks close to the water are always at our guests' disposal. We have a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, dock, and hammocks to relax under the shade of a tree with the cool ocean breeze blowing on you. From our hotel we take guests on adventures in snorkeling, hiking, diving, canoeing and whale watching. Visitors often see four species of monkeys, sloths, tapir, caiman and a myriad of birds, including the scarlet macaw, mangrove hawk, toucan...

We loved our stay at Drake Bay Wilderness Resort. It is in a gorgeous location right where the river meets the ocean, with a long stretch of waterfront property and dramatic ocean views. I particularly like that it is family-run by a lovely Costa Rican family (who are also bilingual) who clearly work hard to keep the beautiful grounds and flowering plants in tip-top shape. The staff were so friendly and kind, and the meals were excellent. I also loved that they have canoes for guests to use; canoeing down the river is definitely worth doing. Finally, the owner told us about a large tide pool just at the end of the property that was a perfect place for our girls to swim. Go check it out!

We have just returned from Costa Rica and spent eight nights at this great resort. We had such a brilliant time! We flew down via Stansa Air on a quick 40 min flight, to save us driving from San Jose. The resort organise a car to collect you from the airport (about 25 mins) and take you to Drake Bay. Once there, they collect you in a boat (remove shoes and socks to get in!) and then in five minutes you arrive at the hotel dock. There's a warm welcome with a cool drink on arrival. We were a family of four, with two adult sons, and stayed in two rooms. The rooms are simple in design, cleaned daily, with a huge bathroom, great shower, small fridge and air conditioning (which we were very appreciative of in the humid climate). We took a snorkelling trip out to Cano Island, a trip to the National Park and the Mangrove tour. In addition, we borrowed the kayaks and did part of the coastal walk. One of the staff kindly dropped us off by boat at a beach down the coast and we walked back enjoying the beautiful views. You can stop off at the beaches along the way for a quick dip in the ocean to cool off. A 15 min walk from the hotel brings you to Cocalito Beach which we loved. The sea is warm and sandy underfoot and macaws were flying above and chattering in the trees. We also enjoyed a bug hunt with Tracie at night - great fun. The staff are all so helpful, nothing was too much trouble and the trips are all efficiently organised. A big shout out to Alonso who looked after us so well at the bar and for mealtimes. We enjoyed his cocktails but our favourite was his Gin and Tonic! We enjoyed these in our favourite place in the bar, with a fantastic, ever changing view across the bay. (This is the only place where you can access wifi but who needs that in such a beautiful place!) Now on to the catering which is full board. Lots of choices for breakfast, fantastic tacos, salads for lunch and a three course meal every night. It was all delicious - we didn't have one meal that was not wonderful. Always different, beautifully prepared and presented. We loved it all! If you go on a trip they let you know if you are going to be back for lunch or eat out. Excursions are always by boat and fruit, water and cookies are provided. The trips started early - we would not normally have breakfast at 5.30 am but if you are going out and won't be back for lunch, we always took advantage of having something before. Although we were there for a week, we didn't struggle for things to do at all. All in all, a brilliant place to stay,

The best option in this area and possibly Costa Rica, as a Tico (people from Costa Rica) who loves to really know his country. I can state this place is such an nice place. If we perform an evaluation of this place in terms of operational excellence we can say:

Time to receive services: outstanding
Benefit VS cost: outstanding
Quality: Outstanding
Customer Service: Exceptional

Even though this place is not a foreign hotel is better than others even outside Costa Rica, is a Real Tourism Experience y Customer Service.

The price is very affordable and to the customer side in relation with the quality, and what you receive (exceed the expectations)

I impressed and amazed with this decision I made to come here with my family and friends!....

Drake Bay is well worth the struggle to get there (fly into small airport, drive/ford the roads and rivers to the beach, and finally, a boat to the Resort). Once there, you have the perfect little cabins (with air conditioning thankfully) right on the ocean, and an easy walk to the bar/pool, office, or the dining hall. Food is good, but leans towards typical Costa Rican foods. They went all out for Valentines Day, with roses and everything! Several tours to Corcovado NP and Cano Island and other interesting spots, plus kayaking in the River. The weather is hot and humid, so be prepared. Few bugs, and barefoot everywhere is ok except for the rocky volcanic shore.

First of all it is not possible to get to this resort by car. You will need to leave the car in a village nearby at the beach and will need to be picked up by boat. This information is very hard to come by.

When I finally got to the resort the reception was really disgraceful. The guy didn’t know of our reservation and had to check it up. He found it but he hardly spoke to me and any questions I asked were answered with as few words as possible. Mostly yes or no.
I had the impression I was really disturbing him.

There was another lady at the reception the next days, equally with a bad behavior. I went to ask something and she kept sitting at her desk with the window closed. Really? I need to shout for her to understand me? What’s wrong with these people, don’t they know how to behave properly towards guests?

The view from the room is beautiful, and the room itself is ok. There is no internet or TV in the room.
Internet access only at the reception and bar.
You can only book the hotel as half board, which makes sense because it is quite difficult to get out of the hotel, especially at night. The food is ok, but nothing special. Breakfast is between 6 and 8 am, dinner is at 6.30 pm.

In the 3 weeks traveling throughout Costa Rica, we’ve been in 8 hotels, this was by far the one with the worst attitude.

Response from Marleny Jimenez, Dueño at Drake Bay Wilderness Resort

Greetings, I will clear the confusion that this guest experienced as well as I can. We do not have vehicle access as anyone can see on Google maps or Waze, we are actually very happy with this because it keeps the area much more natural and serene, however it presents it's challenges. This guest reserved through Booking, I try my best to stay on top of guests travel plans so I can coordinate their pickup, however I did not recieve a text message from Booking, for this booking and it was made with only 1 day anticipation. When the guest arrived at the reception, unfortunately I was not expecting her, and for that I am truly sorry. However as soon as I was made aware of the situation I got busy looking for her reservation trying to figure out what had happened, checking on her room to make sure it was ready, contacting the kitchen staff to inform them 2 more people were coming for lunch, and organizing a boat to pickup her husband from the beach as soon as possible, my intention was not to ignore her but to accomodate her and her husband as soon as possible, I am sorry she got the wrong impression. My office partner is Asmatic, and she understandably takes much care of her health keeping the sliding clear glass window closed temporarily when guests aren't around helps alot with currently blooming mango trees around the property, however she is very friendly to customers and goes above and beyond to accomodate their needs. We encourage all travellers to please inform us regarding their travel plans so we can help them to choose the best route, and organize their arrival as safely as possible.

My family and I stayed at Drake Bay Wilderness Resort six years ago and we have kept coming back since. Before our first stay, we researched all of the hotels in the area and felt that the location was the most beautiful; we could not have made a better decision! We could not speak of the atmosphere, the owners and employees, and the amenities more highly. The hotel catered to our dietary needs and made sure that we were comfortable. The all-inclusive resort comes up in conversation at least once a month for innumerable reasons: the breathtaking views of wildlife and the peaceful ocean waves; the luxurious meals; the kindhearted concierge that welcomes you and treats you like family; and the fact that I already plan my next trip days before I leave the current adventure. I greatly look forward to my next visit!

We had a great stay! Highly recommend!
We were not sure what to expect when we booked. Initially we were a bit surprised at the fairly modest nature of the resort (vs a luxo place) but it grew on us very quickly. Very laid back and relaxed vibe here. It has the feel of a family run place. The resort was fully booked when we were here but it seemed remarkably uncrowded.
The rooms were very clean and maintained daily. The grounds were fairly well maintained and all the rooms were ground level facing the bay and ocean. The grounds and rooms do need a little maintenance work (ongoing?) but this was more then offset by the many positives we experienced.
Service was excellent! The staff was very friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome.
The food was top notch! Excellent preparation and imaginative preparation. As the meals are included we were typically offered 3 choices for each meal - meat, fish and vegetarian. All good!
There were a ton of little touches and interactions during our stay which were charming and very much appreciated.
The standard excursions are snorkling/diving off Cano Island Bio Reserve and touring the Corcavado NP. The snorkling was OK. Unfortunately the corals in this region have not fully recovered from the 83 and 98 El Nino events however there were lots of fish and the boat ride there was a blast. Dolphins and Manta Rays in abundance.
Corcavado NP was fantastic! Well worth going. It's a long (very interesting) boat ride along the Osa Peninsula. We saw a ton of wildlife including some primary lowland rain forest - although it seems birds and wildlife prefer the secondary forest.
There is a primary rainforest bordering the resort and you can experience this walking the trail to the town, kayaking up the river, or taking a short walk to the neighboring beach.
Thumbs up on this place!

Our family of 4 stayed at Drake Bay early January. It was such an idyllic spot -right on the point of the mouth of the bay. The front of the property faces the ocean and the back faces the river/jungle. It's a family run resort with friendly & helpful staff. They booked trips which were fun, and the food was delicious. In fact, it was by far the best food I've had on a vacation ~there wasn't a single meal that wasn't amazing. We saw a variety of animals, both on-site and on the tours (e.g., coatis, anteaters, monkeys, crocodile, shark, turtles, dolphins). You take a boat to get out to the property, and to go on tours, which is an adventure itself. The kayaks they provide were fun to use to explore the river and surf. The pool was refreshing, and the huge, heated shower had some of the best water pressure we've experienced in costa rica. None of us wanted to leave. Highly recommend.

This was the most hospitable resort. Everything was beautiful and thoughtful here. The beds were comfortable, food was delicious and the view/ location was fantastic. I especially appreciated how good the service was. They helped us organize everything we wanted to do to. For a few days during our trip I came down with a cold and they made me fresh ginger and tumeric tea for every meal. When we didnt go out on a tour one day they brought us lunch to a private table near our room where we had beautiful ocean views and macaws eating fruit above us. I really recommend this resort above all others.

My wife and i took a two week trip traveling all over Costa Rica. We started in San Jose, to La Fortuna, to Monteverde, then to Manuel Antonio, our last stop, and the one we were most excited about, was Drake Bay. We arrived by boat since the resort has to roads leading to it, and we were met with a welcome drink of some delicious fruit punch. We were then shown to our bungalow as the Owner/operator grabbed our bags (which weighed a total of about 80lbs) and carried them up to our room at the top of about 2 flights of stairs. The view was incredible. The staff was extremely friendly and really helpful with all our tours. We started our stay being the only guests in the whole place, but that didn't stop the wonderful service. The bar was open and ready to serve, the food... the food was the best food we had on our whole two week trip. It was amazing. I felt like i was at a 5 star gourmet restaurant and should've been wearing a 3 piece suit just by the way the food was prepared and served. Top of the line food for all 3 meals. Te people were so friendly and we had some great conversations with a lot of them. I can't say enough about this place and the way they treat their guests, it was just simply put, an amazing place, with amazing food, amazing views and amazing people. I hope we can go back for a visit sometime.

Corcovado and the Mangrove Tour both offer a great wealth of wildlife and plant life, both are great tours. Also, one of my favorite ones is the Rio Claro Tour. That tour offers relaxation and snorkeling at one of the most beautiful beaches in the area, San Josecito beach. Also, you can canoe up the Rio Claro River and cool off in a beautiful natural pool, hidden in the midst of a rock grove and fed by a stunning little waterfall.
