Grimsstadir Guesthouse

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed here just for one night in July 2015. Our hostess Sigga couldn't have been more accommodating. We had a lovely room. It's also a great location for exploring Dettifoss etc. Highly recommended.

Ok, you've got volcanos, waterfall, lake, glacier all fantastic places but I prefer to see how human adapt to a place, how they live their day to day life and this place gave me a great opportunity to discover Iceland and to spend time with local.
Sigga was great, very polite and helpful and I wish I had more time to spend with her houseband talking about passions we share.
The house was immaculate, very clean, warm and with a great view, not the biggest room but I only had to slip in it and the bed was really comfortable.
I think is a good place to use as a base to visit the surrounding areas (with a car) and probably the best would be to ask for a good local guide to show you around.
Shortly after our arrival Sigga's family joined us, They've been really helpful and willing to spend time with us and tell us about their view on Iceland, places to visit, food to try and just talking about different life style. Great great great people!
Oh by the way excellent wifi.

We stayed at Grimsstadir Guesthouse for two nights in late August 2012 while visiting Jökulsárgljúfur National Park. The owners, Sigga and Bragi, were very gracious, welcoming and helpful in planning our day long hike in the park. The meals Sigga prepared were delicious, the best on our trip.

The location feels like it's in the middle of nowhere but that's how it is in this part of Iceland. We had a hard time finding accomodation anywhere near the park but this fit the bill perfectly (only 15-20 miles to Dettifoss, which is a must-see).

We here that a Chinese company is planning to build a huge resort nearby so check out the status of that if that concerns you.

During our 17 day journey in Iceland, we stayed here for 1 night. Accommodation was nice, and that's where it ends. The food and coffee were in different locations. No coffee in room. The owner told us it was a 5-6 min. ride between the two facilities. It was at least 15 min. on a rutted gravel road. The owner is not very much of a host. Very cold personality. Now for the worst part, the food. We spent $138 for breakfast and dinner (2 people). Here is what we got. We arrived for dinner at the designated time. Then we had to wait nearly an hour because another group was late. The dinner was served buffet style. They had chicken, pork, and lamb. It was so overcooked it was like eating shoe leather. Definitely the worst meal we had in Iceland. Maybe the worst meal anywhere. Breakfast was a cold buffet, and it was an improvement over the dinner. BTW, Booking.com's reviews are skewed. If you send in a negative review they will not post it. Stick with independent reviews.

We stayed three nights at grimstadir guesthouse. The location is remote but yet easily accessible, the atmosphere is warm and cozy. The breakfast was diverse and fresh. We had a wonderful stay and could really feel ourselves at home.

We stayed a night here on out way around the Ring. Sigga was a friendly and helpful host. The house is comfortable and very clean. We also had a lovely lamb meal. It was lovely to stay with a local family. A sheep farm in a remote location the home is in a lovely setting and a great base for visiting the fabulous waterfalls Detifoss and Selfoss and the gorge beyond

The farmer Sigga owns a house in the countryside of North Iceland where she offers sleeping bag accommodation for 5000 ISK/person. We were so lucky to have the whole house for ourselves. The house was and old building, but it had everything we could have wished for and it felt homey. We really enjoyed our stay here, but we expected animals in the farm, which our kids would have loved, and there weren't any, so we were a little disappointed with that. Sigga was friendly and nice, but we didn't have much contact with her (we just met her when we arrived and said goodbye when we left) and we didn't get to experience the "farm-experience" as we expected it. But overall this is a good alternative to the expensive Mytvatn (and its mosquitoes) if you don't mind driving about 40 minutes each way to reach the highlights of the area

We really enjoyed our stay with Sigga and her husband, they are lovely and it was like staying with your lovely Aunty. The room is small but very comfortable and the darkest room we have slept in, gotta love that!! The bathroom is modern with loads of hot wAter.

We had dinner cooked by Sigga, a beautiful lamb roast with veges and salad and then dessert.

Not cheap, but nothing is in Iceland. It would be best suited for quieter types. Whilst very welcoming, it was a little awkward cos we weren't told where the bathroom was, or if we could help ourselves to tea and coffee etc. We didn't want to help ourselves as it is their home, but would have preferred not to feel that we had to ask for a glass of water. It's a toss up - regular guesthouse and be left alone, or a home stay and get to meet people in their own home.

All in all I'd go for the latter and stay with Sigga. It was lovely and peaceful.

One of the more "interesting" experiences we had on our Ring Road roadtrip. First, this guesthouse is not particularly close to Lake Myvatn, so if you're looking to be directly in that area, choose elsewhere. It is very convenient, however, to Dettifoss. The guesthouse is just off the Ring Road, in a very remote area of Iceland....you won't see other businesses or restaurants around.

Reading the reviews, I wasn't prepared for the fact that we were in the owners' actual HOUSE. As in, we were using their living room and their sunroom. To me, that's a little more what you'd expect from a room booked on Airbnb than an independent guesthouse....it's a little awkward. If you're looking for privacy, this isn't a good choice. The bathroom they supply for guests, however, is modern and very nice. You can tell they are very proud of their home.

Lack of privacy aside, the hosts were great. Their English isn't the greatest, but they are very friendly and accommodating. We had two meals with them - dinner and breakfast - and both were terrific (although if you're squeamish, ask how the smoked salmon is smoked before you dive in). We also appreciated being able to see the glow of the raging volcano in the distance, as well as the Northern Lights.
