Absolutely love this place. The rooms are spotless, fluffy towels, bathrobes, all toiletries provided. But the highlights are the fabulous evening meal and the delicious breakfast. You won’t find better. Everything is homemade, thoughtfully served and tastes wonderful. Thank you Paul and your team.

Thank you Kirstene - we even have body lotion in the bathroom - thank you for appreciating all the little extras that we would like ourselves when we go away - but rarely find! Our restaurant has maintained its' 2AA Rosettes - since 2011 - which all of us including our kitchen team are justifiable proud of - again, thank you - for appreciating all their hard work.

Everything from the welcome to the comfortable room, exquisite food and fab wine not to mention the setting. A gem. Food and service second to none, a credit to the team and the welcome notes were witty and on point with everything covered as well as giving you a smile. Loved it, can't believe I didnt go to this fabulous place before. In your own private space yet 2 minute walk from the village where great music & craic awaits. Thank you Paul & team.

We just returned from a fabulous two day break to Ghan House. The house is very close to Carlingford and yet is set in lovely tranquil grounds. Lots of garden furniture around for guests to enjoy a quiet moment listening to the rustle of the trees & birdsong. The lady whom we met on arrival was very welcoming , friendly, highly professional and showed us to our room. I think her name is Hannah. We stayed in one of the garden rooms beside the main house. The room was both very comfortable, clean , had an old world vibe to it and had everything that you would require. There was Tea / coffee facilities in the room with a couple of small homemade cookies was a nice touch. The only very minor blip was the need for a few extra tea bags. There was also a nice range of irish made toiletries from the Hand made Soap company. The wet room with power shower was an adequate sized & suitable for those with mobility issues. While we were visiting a new walkway between the house & annex was being created to assist guests who use either wheelchairs or rollators . There are two electric charging points for cars available. We enjoyed both breakfasts each morning with an excellent selection of cold buffet & made to order hot breakfasts. The homemade brown bread was excellent I would highly recommend it. The lady serving breakfast was very friendly & helpful. Nothing was too much for her. On one of the evenings we enjoyed a sumptuous tasting dinner with matching wines from the Maison Sichel winery near Bordeaux. We were given an informative background to each wine by a member of the Sichel family. There was a relaxed ambience in the elegant dining room with lovely views of Carlingford harbour. The food was amazing and full complements to the chef. Service was delivered very professionally by both Paul and his excellent team. A truly outstanding event and would highly recommend any future events at Ghan House. Well done to all. We look forward to a return visit soon.

A discerning, well travelled guest - who likes to enjoy themselves! Thank you for appreciating all the effort we put in to make our guests enjoy their stay and noticing the little details we add. We're already planning the next wine grower visit to Ghan House - later this autumn we hope - to showcase their wines along with a tasting dinner - keep an eye on our website - we didn't need to advertise the last one and we had to put on an extra night to satisfy demand! Yes, thank you for noticing - our wheel friendly path will be completed this week! Thank you for taking the time out to write about us. See you for our next Special Event!

We spent the weekend in Ghan House with friends and it was such a chilled weekend in this lovely house. It is full of history, very comfortable rooms, lovely friendly staff. Great location for walking into Carlingford, we walked part of the local greenway which you can access just a short distance away with parking down by the marina. We had a delicious dinner on the Saturday night and it was served with no rush and very relaxed which we really enjoyed. Good value wine list. We all really enjoyed our weekend in Ghan house and were able to bring home some lovely homemade marmalade and granola.! It also has 2 electric points. We would love to return soon.

Thank you for taking time out to write about us - from up to date charging points - 2 of them - installed in 2013 (we were ready!) - to enjoying the history of Ghan House - an early Georgian House built in 1727 brought right up to date whilst maintaining the character that you obviously appreciated - thank you for appreciating both ends of the historical spectrum. As you saw - we're a tree length away from Medieval Carlingford with everything that it has to offer - other restaurants, cafés, shops, town tours & much more. Great that you enjoyed The Greenway - a stunning walk, away from the road, along the shores of Carlingford Lough. Relaxed is what we do. It's what many guests say when they are here - which is what it's all about when you one has a well deserved break! Yes - you're not the first to say - our wine list (unlike many other places you can choose to stay) - does not take advantage - you can get an extremely decent bottle of wine that elsewhere could be up to €10 to €40 more a bottle. Glad you enjoyed dinner in our 2AA Rosette restaurant - which we're very proud to have maintained since 2011. All of which adds up to you (& many other) guests enjoying their stay. Thank you. Oh - nice car!

A roaring fire in the hall was a very warm welcome on a chilly February afternoon . Our first trip to Ghan house I hope will not be our last. The owner Paul was friendly & helpful. The bar a snug spot with an extensive selection of wines & spirits is a great place to enjoy a night cap. The breakfasts were delicious & piping hot & our meal on one of the nights of our stay was absolutely delicious . I cannot recommend Ghan House for an unpretentious country house hotel stay . Several restaurants within a 3 mins walk of Ghan house were also exceptionally good & the pubs all really lovely too. The bathroom had the most comfortable roll top bath , separate shower & period suite. I found the towels to be of a quality rarely found in five star hotels . They were super fuffy . I also noticed that a young waiting staff were , well informed & friendly with each other , including their boss

I joined a group of friends for a pre-Christmas escape to Ghan House. Paul Carroll and his team ensured that our arrival and check in at Ghan House was seamless and welcoming. My room was gorgeous, dark furniture, welcoming music playing in the room and on a wet blustery day it was warm, cosy and inviting. The bathroom with it's roll top bath, old fashioned high-cisterned toilet and fittings all tasteful and full of class. We dined in the large dining room with a grand piano at it's centre, with venison, scallops, hake and petit fours it was a fantastic experience . Breakfast the next morning with all of Joyce's home made treats (Paul's Mum) from granola, muesli to fresh fruit and her infamous bread meant we drove home on Christmas Eve truly spoilt. This is a fabulous venue and worth putting on your list for 2023.

And all* our bedrooms now have roll top bath & separate power shower en-suite (*except for one ground floor room that has an easy accessible 'wet room') - thank you for highlighting all that we enjoy here! Overall we were disappointed. The bedroom and bathroom in the main house were fine if a little faded. The public rooms were somewhat limited - not much room for residents if it is fully booked with added non-residents dining. The dining room itself was quaint but the food was poor - overcooking an apparent problem. We found the service and staff no better than adequate. Breakfast was the same. We never came across any management or anyone who presented themselves as such so there was little use in raising issues. We will simply vote with our feet and not return. We would have expected more from a long standing Blue Book member

I see you travel, write & comment about your travels a lot – 2, 451 times to be precise. Reviewing anything from Chicken & chips to your time in Tenerife. We value yours & everyone who stays with us input. Context however, is important; Stretching back 2 years, on Google reviews of the last 50 reviews - 45 were 5 star, 3 were 4 star & 2 were 3 star – 243 out of a max of 250 or 97% satisfaction rating. Stretching back 2 ½ years on Tripadvisor, of the last 35 reviews - 33 were 5 bubble and 2 were 4 bubble – a total of 173 out of a max of 175 or 99% satisfaction rating. Stretching back 2 ½ years on booking.com, of the last 50 reviews - 31 marked us 10/10, 17 marked us 9/10 and 2 marked us 8/10 – a total of 479 out of 500 or 95% satisfaction rating. “Ghan House is easily one of the best places we have stayed in. It is warm, homely with exceptional attention to detail.” “Relaxing atmosphere with friendly staff, delicious food, and spacious accommodation.” “Absolutely amazing cuisine in an elegant historical setting” “Great stay, gorgeous house, rooms and gardens. Food was fab, will definitely be back” “Everything from the welcome to the comfortable room, exquisite food and fab wine not to mention the setting. A gem. Food and service second to none” “Spectacular staff, amazing food and you can’t get a better location. Beds were very comfortable and water was hot, breakfast made to order and a great selection of fruit, yogurt toast and juice in addition to the main breakfast. The little extras give this place have a special charm that will stay in your memories forever.” “Wonderful character filled properly very tastefully decorated and opulent” We give every guest of ours a questionnaire which you did not fill in. We ask every guest on leaving if they enjoyed their stay – of which you did decided not to let us know any of your opinions you express here. Thank you for taking the time to tell the whole world of your own opinions behind an anonymous pseudonym via this platform which we all have seen and which we all take very seriously here at Ghan House. A positive constructive contribution would be letting us know exactly when you were here & letting us know anything at the time of your stay that we could have corrected for you. We are not perfect but we do know guests do enjoy themselves when they stay with us & appreciate all the attention that we put into everyone’s stay. Praise and appreciation can lead to complacency and we know that we can’t please all the people all the time – I don’t think there is a hospitality venue in the world that can. Our reputation is garnered over 27 years of continual improvement – throughout all aspects. We are visited many times by travel critics who write the guidebooks – we’ve been honored to have been recommended in “The Best 100 Places to Stay in Ireland” by John & Sally McKenna, won the “Best Breakfast" award by Georgina Campbell in “Best of the Best Places to stay in Ireland” and many more accolades. Indeed, the AA – as well as awarding us for 4* for our bedrooms (all have roll top bath & separate power shower, mountain views etc) and 2AA Rosettes for the restaurant – maintained since 2011 – they awarded us “Best Guest Accommodation in Ireland” 2020. You decided to write your review after visiting us once. You made no mention of anything you write whilst you were here. Maybe next time you stay somewhere – it would be helpful to let them know of anything that is not to your level of satisfaction. Next time you have something at work which doesn’t go as you had planned – imagine one of your peers writes on a social media site about you – one that everyone could see, what your failings were on that 1 day. Otherwise, you’re the standout employee at work. How would that make you feel? Sometimes reviews can say much more about the reviewer.

I’m so sorry to read so many amazing positive reviews but I’m afraid my review is not one of them. I was attending with a party of 20+ for a celebration and from start to finish I’m afraid to say it was all terrible.
Upon arrival we were shunted towards the room that had been set aside for the celebration, it was empty and lifeless. Even after asking if there was a bar it was recommended we waited in the room. However, I found the bar and was served drink by staff that made no effort to communicate in a friendly way whatsoever, it could even have been a comment ‘beautiful day today’, despite my own efforts to start conversation there was nothing.
When sitting down for the meal we lifted the name cards to move one around so a husband and wife could sit together and we were literally shouted at by a member of staff ‘don’t move the names around’. While I can understand you may a system in place so food gets delivered to the right people, there is a way to speak to customers.
The food arrived, course after course and what was served was utterly disappointing for the money it cost which was more than 60euro per person. Some cold chefs’ appetiser for vegetarian, which was tasteless, cold rice with no taste. My starter was ‘waffle’ which was nice but cold, but to be honest I’m not sure if it should have been served hot or cold!!
My potato main was then served with . . . . . ‘Potato’s of the day’, so my main was potato with potatoes, no offer of seasonal veg or any other side. Dessert was ‘mascarpone mousse’ but judging by how many people at my table left their dessert they must have felt the same as me. We discussed the dessert at length but reckon the mascarpone had been left out. It was tasteless with something like gelatine running through it, I managed to eat the fruit from it, that was it, the texture of the dessert was horrible.
The person beside me had a vegan dessert which was chunks of banana on a plate with some horrible jelly type brown stuff in the middle, we all did have a really good giggle around the table and dared her to eat it, its look so disgusting and so poorly presented. I really wish I had taken pictures of this food as you can’t imagine it really by my description.
Unfortunately staff were very unfriendly, they made no effort to communicate or be friendly at all. It looked a bit like it was all run under some strict regime. The atmosphere was cold with no background music.
As I was with a party that I hadn’t organised I didn’t feel it was right at the time to complain (I didn’t want to create an ‘atmosphere’ and spoil the celebration). I’m sure the owner will suggest that I should have raised my complaints at the time, but it wasn’t appropriate and quite frankly the food that was being served should have been noticed by the staff and owners as poor.
If my experience had been excellent I would also have left a review but unfortunately myself or the friends I was sitting with won’t be revisiting. I had heard so much positive about this venue and there is no doubt the surrounds and the building are beautiful. In my opinion this was pretentious food poorly executed in an unfriendly environment.

Thank you for your honest review. You are completely entitled to relay your experience to everyone in the world rather than either talk to me on the evening or indeed pick up the 'phone and talk to me – which would have been far more humane. How would you feel, if on one day a client of yours was not happy with you, your staff or your product, and as well as declining to re-order from you, decided to put it on a dedicated social network that your business was involved in, on the world wide web, so that all your work colleagues and others in the same industry as you would see. Even though you and your company may indeed have a hard earnt, very good reputation built up over 25 years. But these are the times, some industries are living in. We have all seen your 2 reviews and are devastated. It’s not what we do. Now it seems much of society has reverted to being keyboard warriors that don’t face up directly to what is required. We have spent 25 years working hard to achieve the reputation that we have maintained – with the help of professional food critics, guide book writers and our valued returning guests who measure us on many visits. If we fell short in your opinion on this occasion – that certainly is not what we have based our business on these past 25 years – as many, many other reviews attest too – not just on this platform, but others also. I am very much a believer in that hearing positive reviews does not make us better, it’s ones such as yours, that we take on board that makes us better. We are always looking to improve. I personally look forward welcoming you back to Ghan House – please make yourself known to me – Paul - if you do decide to call – so we can show you that we are grateful for all the guests who return to Ghan House & show you both the reason why we have garnered a great reputation over 25 years and that we all work hard to achieve, maintain and take a great pride in.

Ghan House is a rare gem in hotels, a small boutique of luxury, with a welcoming host and an idyllic setting nestled on the the shores of Carlingford. We stayed in room four it was a luxurious room with a canopy bed, claw roll top bath and views across the water. Dinner was a delight, cooked by the French chef Stefan. Each course was a sensory experience of excellence. Looking at what everyone had chosen off the menu gave food envy. We felt very safe there and the breakfast the next morning was delightful with many home cooked treats including the wheaten bread and jams. The town was steeped in history along with small shops and boutiques selling art and jewellery. There is a castle and a harbour and a greenway inviting cyclist and walkers. There is also a ferry across to the other side of the estuary. Highly recommend Ghan House.

It's great to have guests who appreciate what we're all about - we care & we have fun taking care. We're small enough to feel safe in - just 12 bedrooms with restaurant in the high ceiling drawing room - socially spaced tables are easy in such a splendid large room. We're just this week finishing off the renovations of the last three bedrooms - so all our double & twin bedrooms have a roll top bath + separate power shower now - and the 2nd Air Source heat pump is being fitted this week - making the heating + hot water supply in both the main house & garden bedrooms using 100% renewable electricity. We're lucky enough that all our bedrooms have mountain views and all double beds are Queen Size or larger. Glad you enjoyed your dinner too - Stéphane our head chef has maintained our two AA Rosettes - first awarded in 2011. We're proud of the town we live in too - we enjoy & frequent the cute shops, cafés and other restaurants - when we have the time! And taking the car, bicycle or the walking shoes - on the ferry across the lough is a great thing to do! Glad you enjoyed your stay.

I booked a private Cookery Course with Paul and the team, the event got postponed ~6 times due to Covid - we finally got around to it last weekend. The Venue is an absolute favourite of mine, Small-ish, Old country house, open fireplace greeting you in the Hallway. The tone is set as soon as you enter that Hallway.
We were a party of 8, and Chief Niamh created a challenging menu for us, 3 starters, 3mains courses, 3 desserts, and Guinness Breads. The team were split into 3, and we were put to work ! Over the next 3 hours, we worked Hard and Merrily to Christmas music, broke to freshen up before we privately Dined in the gorgeous room off the ground floor Hallway. The team couldn't do enough for us, the food was Fabulous, the atmosphere was magical, and the craic was mighty.
I cannot recommend this Venue and Activity enough. My team of 8 couldn't stop raving about it all through the meal, and all the following day, each urgently trying to recreate the food while fresh in our memories.
If you have a group of close friends, or family, and you want to spend some badly missed time with them, due to the pandemic, this Activity and Venue is for you.
I cannot wait to go back.. Thanks Paul, Orla, Niamh and the team.

We have a converted stable that has two little areas for 2 dogs - just bring your own dog blanket/basket that they are used to.
In addition Carlingford has many marked walks - on the mountain, The Greenway that runs alongside Carlingford Lough and seashore walks.
Hope this helps.
If you wish to book - all the best packages are only available if you book direct with us.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Dear Tracey
Many thanks for your email.
Yes we can look after you for 1 night on Friday 27th March. We have 2 rooms available, both in the main house, both with bath & separate power shower en-suite and mountain views. For the bigger room at €140 per person - for accommodation, dinner & breakfast - call that €130 pp!
Just accommodation & breakfast does not work out quite as good. it is €95 per person for the standard room.
Kind regards
Paul
