I stayed at Balrath back in September 2018 and really liked it it was cosy had everything I needed. It’s out of the way quiet beautiful Meath as ever. Frances the host was very kind and she was telling me she has nice plans for the place in the future. I WOULD RECOMMEND Balrath
we stayed in a block known as the schoolhouse, Ballymagarvey Village which is a group of outbuildings to Ballymagarvey, Balrath, Co. Meath. The original house was built mid 18th century and has been thoroughly restored. It was once the home of the Osborne family. back to our room. it was unusual, opening directly off the courtyard. The only window was a tiny one incorporated into the door. The bathroom was lovely. there was no TV. there was no tea making facilities in the room. the bed was big. Clearly it has been developed for a particular type of customer.
Terrible Experience of host (and we didn’t even get the honour to stay)! 1) lack of communication from host for 18 days when wanting to change my booking- had booked two nights and wanted to cancel the second due to family concerns - called and emailed host on 1 November 2018 re my booking on 31 December 2018 (2 months notice) and did not hear from her until 18 November 2018 after stating that I’d be writing to Failte Ireland; 2) when host finally contacted us to say she had received my voice messages and emails she continued to state that she was charging us for cancelling the second night; 3) I was not provided with a cancellation policy at time of booking and when reviewing her website there was none to be found; 4) host called me and said I had 24-48 hours to pay for my first nights accommodation including the cancellation fee or she was cancelling my booking because if I can cancel then she can cancel too; 4) when I asked where her cancellation policy was she abruptly told me to “look for it yourself!”; 5) 19 November 2018- I took screen grabs of the website with no cancellation policy anywhere to be found however between the hours of 6pm and 8 am the following morning the host had updated her website and included a T&Cs which she has been updating since- which surprise surprise note that you are to give at least 8 weeks notice (exactly what I had given!) Thanks to the internet, You can actually check her older website via a web archive site and see that no cancellation policy or terms are included on the sight from between January 2018 to August 2018 and I can guarantee they were not there to 19 November 2018 either via screen grabs; 6) Host falsely mentions on her website that she is Failte Ireland approved - I contacted Failte Ireland with my complaints about the host and they informed me that her accommodation was not recognized or affiliated with them and they would write to her to ask her to take it down; 7) wrote to host asking her to stop withholding my deposit and return it to me and have had no responses; 8) my last resort, due to the unreasonableness and lack of any type of logic or mediation, is to go to small claims court as I don’t see how this host can carry on/ behave in such a manner over €70!! 9) the chances that she has rebooked the room and made no loss (and in fact a gain from withholding our deposit) is that there was a list of people looking for accomidation in the area due to a wedding in a near by hotel on the night!…
I booked Balrath for a one night stay and due to family circumstances I had to cancel, I gave Frances almost three weeks notice of the cancellation but she still insisted in a very off hand manner to retain my deposit, definitely a place to avoid.
Stayed in Balrath Courtyard for wedding in Ballymagarvey. Less than a mile away although would not advice to walk at night as it's on a windy country road. Check in and check out was seamless. Stayed in 2 bed cottage which was perfect for family of four. Didn't get to appreciate the nice garden area as it was raining but it would be lovely for a get together. All essentials supplied including scones for arrival and makings of a breakfast.
