It pains me to write this review as I’ve tried my hardest to contact the hotel directly through both head office and privately through social media but to no avail as no one appears to care about our thoughts on our stay here (there is no email address to anyone directly at the Compleat Angler).

I have to say that sums up the stay, the front of house were very attentive and the lobby area clean bright and airy. We checked into room 61 and had to head straight out to meet friends for dinner locally, so we dropped our bags in the room and left.

In the morning we started to notice just how tired and old the room was, the bathroom was dirty, the door split and marks on the fake marble side. The wallpaper was coming away in the bedroom, there were cobwebs hanging from the curtains and a live wire taped over right outside our window.

All this for £197 a night, paid in advance, without breakfast! (However if we did wish to pay for breakfast upon arrival we could be booked into the restaurant in the morning at either 7am or 7:45am neither of which are ideal, but I feel this was a blessing in disguise given the rest of stay and The Ivy down the road does a wonderful breakfast at what I would imagine a similar cost).

This hotel is living on its location and its past reputation but if other rooms are similar to ours this hotel is now also lost in the past.

What frustrates me most is that I’ve never taken to trip advisor with a poor review as I will always try and give establishments the opportunity to act before this.

As previous reviewers have pointed out, the hotel is in a quite unique situation. Right by the Thames, within walking distance of Marlow and close by other areas of interest. Your first impression is one of delight. It fades somewhat as you make your way upstairs to your room when you notice the decor appears to be somewhat dated but it is still very clean. The room allocated to my wife and I overlooked the car park and was perfectly OK for us. The en-suite looked fairly new and everything worked perfectly. The staff are extremely well trained and very competent. The set-menu evening meals were outstanding and are a complement to the chef and his team. However, the thing that struck me as really annoying was the price of wine in the dining room. Incidentally, I can stomach a £9.50 small gin and tonic on the lawn because of the view and the situation but £31.90 plus a 12.5% service charge for a £7 bottle of wine is incomprehensible. It appeared to me that a 400% mark up was the norm across all wines on offer. I did take it up with the Manager who admitted that the prices were set by Directors of the company. I must say in his defence that he worked his socks off making sure all his guests were well looked after. Hats off to Gavin and his team.
In summary it's a great hotel and well worth a visit. Hopefully by the time you go there, sense will have prevailed re the price of their wine.
As I write this, it appears likely that a further lockdown will happen. Despite the fact that hand sanitizers and notices about the wearing of masks were everywhere, it appears that many hotel guests and visitors were immune to Covid 19 as they simply did not comply with the rules re social distancing and the wearing of masks!!

Thank you very much for your review and honest feedback. The team work incredibly hard to make our guests feel welcome and looked after, so your comments are greatly appreciated. I know board are looking at reviewing our prices very soon so hopefully this will put minds at rest for future guests. I can also confirm that over the last week there has been a remarkable improvement in guests wearing masks when entering or moving around the hotel which is very reassuring. I look forward to welcoming you back very soon. Kind regards Gavin

We have now visited this hotel about 4/5 times over the past few years and its location and stay never fails to disappoint. We have very luckily ended up in the same part of the hotel, overlooking the rear garden and weir the last two times. The sounds of the water rushing over the weir at night is so relaxing or sitting out on the small balcony, when the sun came out was super. We didn't eat here this time and as we had transferred a previously booked winter break to May, we didn't have breakfast included without paying quite a hefty supplement. So we chose room only, as we had some other meals booked in Marlow itself. Staff were very helpful and attentive and the location is right across the bridge from the high street and with great access to the Thames bath. We will be back I am sure.

Upon arrival was struck by the location and beauty of the hotel. We got to the hotel an hour before check in time but staff were very accommodating and held our luggage behind the desk for us and we went into the bar and sat on the veranda next to the river Thames which was very pleasant. Staff were friendly in the bar and made polite chit chat and wore their masks appropriately. We had booked the room up from their very basic and had breakfast included which was over £200 for the one night. When we got to the room I was pleasantly surprised to see a nespresso coffee machine as I have one at home so was pleased to be able to have a decent coffee in the room only to soon find no pods had been provided for the machine and no other tea or coffee services provided like kettle, tea and milk etc. When I queried at reception later on they left me some instant coffee outside my door but still no milks etc and I’d have expected a little better to be honest. Provided included in the room was a bottle of still and sparkling water which was a nice touch. And also dressing gowns and slippers.

I’d like to recommend as well to the hotel that perhaps at least one socket in the room could be changed to provide usb charging as well as there are none in the rooms (or not in the one we were in at least).

We ate in Sindhu restaurant which is located in the hotel in the evening and the food was amazing so would definitely recommend that whilst staying here. We had breakfast in the lounge downstairs which was also lovely and the food itself very good quality. Upon leaving there was an issue with our bill where things we hadn’t ordered or eaten were on there but was quickly sorted and a refund issued.

All in all, a very enjoyable stay and nothing spoiled it, just the little mistakes and oversights were unnecessary and could have been avoided.

I’d definitely stay again and look forward to it.

Reading some of the reviews I was pretty apprehensive about staying, especially since we’d cancelled a stay elsewhere.

Overall a good stay at the Compleat Angler. The room had a nice view of the garden and Victorian bridge over the river thames. I agree with other reviewers that it wasn’t the newest or slickest room; the a/c didn’t seem to work at all (although maybe as not to circulate air between rooms and make the place more Covid safe). There was a mini fridge to use, plenty of tea and coffee choices in room, and amenities like iron, hairdryer and fan (thank god!).

The outside bar was great and we used twice during our stay, although it was very pricey even considering the area; fine if you’re on business, but not so much if you’re shelling out yourself. Inside the restaurant was good, all staff wearing masks and gloves, and the food was rather good too. The only trouble seemed to be the slightly confusing layout which meant another couple and ourselves hanging around the empty bar area waiting for someone to seat us.

Breakfast was room service only, but was really well put together and at the time we requested it - couldn’t fault that at all.

The staff generally were great, attentive, friendly, and doing an outstanding job in these difficult times. It’s a shame some of the guests couldn’t show some more respect towards the staff and other guests by face covering through the tight corridors of the hotel.

Along with two friends we booked for afternoon tea at The Compleat Angler in Marlow. The hotel has done a really good job of social distancing signage and copious amounts of hand sanitiser available everywhere making the experience feel very relaxed and comfortable. From being greeted by the General Manager and served by 'Ovo' the whole afternoon was extremely enjoyable. We sat overlooking the River Thames, Marlow Bridge and the Church and were treated to an excellent selection of Teas, sandwiches, Scones and Cakes. `the addition of Lemon Curd with the scones along with Strawberry Jam and Clotted Cream was a nice touch.
Ovo's attention to detail and service was impeccable. Thanks.
We have already booked to return in two weeks time and are looking forward to it as another special treat!

Too much effort to book. Too little to impress (other than location). Won't be returning.

I always believed that the Compleat Angler was one of those names on the Thames that eschewed the smooth elegance of best service, exquisite rooms and world class food and wine, so finding ourselves still in Marlow after a longer than anticipated lunch, we tried to book in instead of making the long drive home.

As I had questions about the rooms and service that wasn't available on the website I tried to call. The Macdonald's multichoice phone system is painful at best but with none of the choices being answered at all (bookings, reception, corporate bookings, or even restaurant) it took 2 hours of repeated calls to get through to a central offsite call centre. A dreadful first impression.

The lady on reception when we arrived was very helpful and made sure we had a river view despite being in a standard room.

The view was wonderful but the walls were paper thin with noise from conversations in the next room being embarrasingly clear.

We passed on evening dining at the restaurants but had the breakfast. It was exceedingly average. So many small improvements could have easily lifted the experience.

A limited choice. Full cooked or continental with any normal buffet styled starters and cereals offered only as a 'has to be ordered due to covid', but without being able to see what was available it made it unworthwhile.

The toast served was of a lower quality than a Premier Inn. Cheapest thin white or basic brown. Nothing more exotic, not even sliced granary was available when requested and the bacon was overcooked and greasy (I suspect precooked and stored in a warming pan)

The basic level breakfast destroyed any belief that the restaurant was anything special and we were glad that we had skipped dinner.

Covid could be used as an excuse but having enjoyed a fantastic selection and quality breakfast at the Hotel Du Vin in Henley the day before we know that better is easily possible.

Overall it felt as though a once great establishment is now being run by a bland conference centre corporate.

Too much effort to book. Too little to impress (other than location). Won't be returning.

Thank you for your review, feedback and honesty. I am sorry you experienced trouble with the phone system which I appreciate would have been very frustrating for such a simple task. Your comments regarding breakfast are disappointing to read, as I know the team do their best to make this meal an enjoyable experience, therefore am so sorry this was not the case when you visited us. Our bread we use is Hovis Wholemeal and Hovis Soft White, again I am sorry this was not to your liking. The bacon should not been overcooked and greasy. I have already shared your feedback with my breakfast chef, who wishes to apologise too. Finally, I understand you are choosing not to return, however be assured if you ever did decide to visit again, I would personally ensure you have a much improved experience. Kind regards Gavin

We spent one night at this hotel during August and loved every minute. On arrival were impressed with the precautions taken for Covid-19, having been emailed ahead to inform us how the hotel were working to keep us safe.
From the one-way system, to the hand sanitising, and the sealed door sticker, we were impressed and felt comfortable with staying away from home.

The rooms were comfortable and clean, the staff polite and efficient, and the breakfast was good value and tasty.
It occupies a delightful position right on the river and we enjoyed afternoon tea overlooking the river in the garden and made use of the lovely deck chairs on the back lawn where we sat and read our books in the afternoon sunshine.
I will definitely return.

It's some while since we last reviewed the Riverside Restaurant. Whilst the setting overlooking the Thames, Bridge and Church is as sublime as ever, the Restaurant itself seems to have become much more popular and less efficient in the Kitchen.

We arrived at 1.20 on a busy weekday lunchtime; were greeted warmly by Ana and had an excellent table. Menus, drinks, bread and wine came very promptly thanks to Ana, but after ordering she went off shift - and we than waited almost an hour for starters ( which only came after someone casually asked if we had had them already !) and a further hour before mains arrived, by which time the restaurant was long deserted with only 1 other table occupied, loitering over their coffee. Dessert eventually came and after coffee we left at 5.00 pm !
The food itself was excellent in flavour and presentation and worth waiting for, but the long delays took the edge of an otherwise good experience. Fortunately we had much to discuss but otherwise would have been very frustrated. The day was saved by an exceptional later waiter called Ovo; who was very attentive, apologetic and anxious over the delays. Being a musician by trade he even spontaneously and entertainingly played several classical arrangements on the piano whilst we ( alone by now) waited. Good initiative and soothing; he's to be commended. Management needs to tighten up on order of service in the kitchen, as we heard 2 other tables complaining about the long delays. We appreciate the a la carte menu is fine dinning and good things need time to prepare and present, but even so; at these prices they could afford to have an extra sous chef to speed things along a little more.
So a slightly less satisfying experience on this occasion; we shall be back soon to se if better service has resumed !

From the moment you enter reception you are greeted with a smile and a lovely ambience.
The room was spacious and airy , had all the touches you expect (gowns, good quality products in the bathroom) extremely clean room , comfortable bed.
The whole hotel was clean so big thumbs up to housekeeping staff 😀
We ordered breakfast in bed and the order was missing a few items, however within a few minutes the lovely concierge apologised brought them to our room it’s those small things that make a Hotel from average to great.

Would definitely stay in the hotel again!

It is probably best to speak to the staff who are very helpful and can provide you with the best options. We were on the top floor over looking the weir in the main hotel but there is a newer annex which also has rooms over looking the river.
