I was well aware of the reviews before I reluctantly booked The Bell Hotel for a last minute trip to see family. I have stayed in all types of accommodation through work and holidays. My parents had stayed a few times but didn’t like their rooms the same feedback they need updating etc. so when I booked my expectations were low. However what I found immediately was very friendly and helpful staff. Nothing was too much effort happy to chat and find you what you need which given the current climate is very reassuring and very nice. And that was all staff young and slightly older ! We had lunch which was delicious and cooked to perfection. I didn’t book breakfast but when I came back with my granddaughter to check out we did decide to have breakfast again not a problem the staff were great. Omelette was fab and the full English nice I should have asked for well done bacon though! We had room 30 .. this might scupper me going forward but after hearing my mum’s thoughts on the rooms reading reviews etc I was expecting the worst .. 5 star it isn’t but then I didn’t pay a 5 star price so keep that in mind before you complain.. it was a massive room we had our little Pug Bertie massive bathroom clean tidy yes it does need a little updating but it smelt nice and was comfy. But I
Do think Greene King owe it to this hotel to give it a good refurb because if you look closely it really is an old building with a lot of history and needs preserving.

I made the booking 4 months in advance and phoned twice in before we arrived. Once to ensure i had the Arthur Lowe suite (room 29) and once to book a dinner reservation because we had the dinner, breakfast and room rate. This was all done and we were very exited to spend the night. On arrival we checked in fine but we were told even though we had the dinner reservation we couldn't use it and had to eat at the bar because they had a function which was a bit annoying. Once getting into the room it looked amazing! but the en-suite bathroom was horrible. It wouldn't even be what you would expect in a motorway travelodge. The bath panel was loose, the floor was just two sheets of plywood, the toilet roll holder was broken and so was the toilet seat. This was quite alarming considering i would expect the toilet seat to be cleaned/ checked before a guest checks in. Once speaking to the manager this was rectified quickly by sending the off duty chef to sort it out. We had a nice few pints in the bar with our meal and it was a lovely end to the evening. In the morning we went to the restaurant and had a full English. Half way through my partners food she found a long grey hair on top of the black pudding, She was offered new food but the damage was already done. On checking out we were told that we owed over £20 on the tab and was told that she couldn't see what it was for. But we were advised that the meal that was included in our room rate only gave us a budget of £20 each. Which was weird as we were given a set menu. Because we were unaware of this the receptionist kindly let us off. Overall i would say that it wasnt worth the £165 i paid and the only good thing was knowing that the room had history with Arthur Lowe / Dads army.

Booked in for one night and pleased with super king 4 poster bed and LARGE room at a really good price but en- suite in urgent need of tidying ( never stayed in a room with an uncovered plywood floor!) and a thorough clean although the water pressure was perfect.
Had a meal in the bar and one of the best starters ( for the price) i have had for many a year, try the pate , main course of turkey and trimmings perfectly acceptable albeit a little too much for me . Full English breakfast ok if a bit on the cold side ( perhaps a minute longer in the Microwave needed ?).
Heard some strange noises in the night - perhaps this hotel is haunted- after all ?? Although the occupiers of the next room had a smile on their face in the morning which could explain the nocturnal acoustics....! ( oh to be young again)

Arrived to a warm welcome by the lovely lady on reception, Covid taken very seriously all staff wearing PPE and lots of hand sanitiser dotted around the hotel.
Was a party of 4 we were given rooms 15 & 16 on first floor overlooking street, first impressions were room was clean but cold as windows had been left open (which was fine as at least it had been aired out)
Windows are very old and in need of replacing and had moss/mould growing on outside.
Room had smell of new carpets (which was nice) however when you opened the wardrobe it smelt of damp so much so we just left our close in suit-bag, no drawers at all in room, Bathroom was clean but tired and needs replacing.
Kettle/Tea/Coffee/Shortbread etc on side table and refreshed daily.
Radiator not working but secondary convector heater on wall quickly heated up room, however had no hot water, told reception and the lady that had booked us in said in windy weather the fan to the boiler sometimes blows out so would go and check and get it working again.
Booked Dinner in the Lounge for later and went out to explore Thetford had coffee and sandwich in Cafe opposite (sorry cant remember name) which was really good and very cheap!
Came back had drinks in the bar went to freshen up ready for dinner to find hot water was still tepid.
Got ready and went down for dinner to find that we had been put in the bar as they had given our table in the lounge to another guest.
Dinner was ok apart from my starter (prawn/avocado cocktail) avocado was black so didn't eat it said it would be taken off bill but wasn't.
Hot water never happened so they moved us from 15 to room 6 which was a nicer room and had hot water but we now had no heating (a fan heater was delivered after we called reception)
Bathroom was similar to room 15, toilet roll was left on shelf when I placed it on the holder the holder fell off the wall bringing with it 4 tiles. (probably wyy it was left on shelf)
Best bit of all was the breakfast cooked fresh (waitress service) no self service due to Covid. lots to choose from and all lovely, coffee and tea was good and hot and could have refills if wanted, our lovely waitress was Lucy and she was absolutely brilliant a real asset to Green King!
Have to say ALL the staff were really lovely and couldn't do enough for us Green King needs to upgrade this hotel and really look after their wonderful loyal staff before they all move on..

This is a beautiful looking old building but don’t be fooled. It’s a shame Greene King have let it fall behind.
Definitely not worth the £75 room only fee.
It’s in poor condition and the rooms are very tired looking which is a shame because it could have lots of character and be very nice.
To be honest we spent little time there and didn’t eat or visit the bar. But I m not sure I d like to given the run down rooms.
Parking is free and plentiful. We checked in and out very quickly and easily. Staff were polite kind and helpful throughout our overnight stay.
We were initially given a room which had a broken window that wouldn’t close properly so it was freezing on arrival. The radiator was cold. There was a small fan heater provided which sounded like a helicopter was landing in the room.
We complained about not being able to close the window and we were quickly taken to another room. This was clean, a very comfortable bed and clearly efforts made to improve it - new sink, shower and fairly recently updated With new carpet and painted room. But still paint peeling off the wall in the bathroom and limescale in the toilet.
So for £75 a night - definitely would choose somewhere else and definitely won’t be returning.
Whilst the staff were very friendly and polite a little training in etiquette of room charges would be helpful.
When checking out I overheard 2 conversations.
The first was about drinks being added to a room bill without the occupants knowledge. He paid though I m not sure why as he hadn’t signed for any drinks in the room.
The second where a breakfast charge was added to a room where this was included in the original booking. The breakfast charge was removed.

Partner and I visited for our first drink in Thetford, led to our table by a polite young assistant who took order. My Partner (who is in the pub trade) asked for Abbott but was told that nothing was coming out of the pump so he told her to turn the clip round. This didn't happen during the time we were there. The drinks took more than 10 minutes to arrive although there were few customers inside or outside. Eventually a half pint of lime and soda and an average IPA appeared with large bill. I queried the amount and was shocked when I was eventually told the price of a glass of soda with just a hint of lime. Shan't be going back!

I have just recently stayed at the Bell Hotel in the centre of Thetford. There is a carpark onsite but if you are not staying in the hotel there is a charge or you could be fined. I was greeted by a very friendly young lad before checking in. My room was on the first floor overlooking the courtyard carpark. The room was perfect for my stay although I couldn't get heating from the radiator. This wasn't too much of a problem.
I went down to the restaurant for my evening meal. There was a good choice of pub style food. I chose fish and chips and was upsold some scampi and bread as well. The meal was very hot and enjoyable.
During the evening and night the hotel was very quiet and I slept very well. As expected the guests start waking up from 06:00 using the bathroom so there is some noise - just normal.
I went for breakfast at 08:00 and chose a full English and toast. I think there was only one member of staff showing you to your table, taking orders, bring order to the table and clearing away. She was very overworked meaning from ordering to getting my breakfast took a fair while (the waitress was really rushed off her feet)
So overall a nice experience although I am still waiting for my invoice to be emailed to me for the final cost four days later.

We booked two rooms for an overnight stay. One was a superior double with a four poster bed in the old part of the hotel. It was a large room with comfy bed. The floor in the bathroom under the bath was very spongy and dipped quite alarmingly when you stood there.
We had a couple of dishes off the menu on Sunday evening. The staff were very busy but were very friendly. However some of the dishes were very disappointing. The nachos were "home made" and very greasy as they were fried. Almost inedible. When telling the member of staff, she said they'd been told to make home made ones, but ordinary Doritos out of a bag would have been far better.
The dessert of a choux bun was a big mush, tinned strawberries and not like the picture on the menu.
The apple and blackberry crumble pie was too much pastry. An ordinary crumble or pie would be better, not both.
Breakfast was better, a good choice of usual items, and the full English breakfast was cooked to order.
For the money, it was good value.

Pleasant hotel. We were going to a party in Thetford and my boyfriend booked us into this hotel. I read some bad reviews but still decided to go in with an open mind, and it was lovely. Ladies who worked there were really lovely. They did say the bar food was being served when it wasn't, but we only had to wait 45 mins and they took our order in the meantime and cooked it as soon as they opened for food. The room was clean and cosy, but plenty of room. Whilst the room and bathroom wasn't contemporarily modern, it was clean, very comfortable, spacious and had what we needed. We were in the old part of the hotel and had a lovley view of the church. Even though the hotel was busy it was lovely and quiet in our room. Breakfast was tasty. All in all, it wasn't an expensibe hotel and it is not 5star, but it is lovely and we got what we paid for and were happy we stayed.

Spent a fabulous night at The Bell at Thetford. The food was well prepared and delicious. The staff on Saturday, Lucy, Renee and Vinnie were professional, courtious and happy. Nothing was too much for us and made the evening no brilliantly. The Hotel are lucky to have such hard smiling working staff. Wish Greene King would spend some money on the rooms and communal areas as it would get alot more return custom if the rooms were refurbished.

Thank you The Bell in Thetford for all your hard work!!
