My wife and I booked a table for evening dining last week. We used to live the in the village around 10 years ago but never got around to dining here. We now live nearly an hours drive away but decided to take the trip anyway as we love our good food. My wife made the booking via email which was as simple as agreeing a time and informing of how many people for. It’s a lovely building tucked back off of the main road, parking was a little tricky as spaces are limited and shared between diners and people staying. The staff on arrival were great and explained that the lounge was full as asked if we would mind going straight to our table, which wasn’t a problem. We were there for 3 courses but received some tasty nibbles when we sat down and a lovely taster to start. The chef clearly knows their food. The only issue we had was when we came to order. The main section on the menu had no vegetarian option at all. This is very strange and something I’ve never seen lacking on any menu. When the waitress, a lady we hadn’t seen already that evening, came to our table to take our order, we asked what the veggie option was. We were met with a confused look and was informed that any dietary requirements should have been made clear when making our booked. We informed the waitress that this was not made clear to us when booking and that being vegetarian is not a dietary requirement. Also, written at the bottom of the menu it said, “please let your waitress know of any dietary requirements”, so clearly this could be made known at the time. It was very unprofessional to blame the customer for this, but I will give the waitress the benefit of the doubt because she did do her best to see what alternative she could arrange for my wife. The dish my wife received in the end, although a plate of sides, was very tasty and was like a plater. Again, the chef clearly knows their food. It’s a real shame that a veggie option is not always on the menu as the food was really good, and for this reason we sadly won’t be returning. I would however, encourage anyone who eats meat and fish to try this place for food at it was lovely and good value.

A warm welcome from Richard on arrival followed by a slice of home made cake , a real nice touch, the double room we stayed in was very comfortable and well equipped. The staff are a credit to the hotel and cannot do to much for you and make you very welcome at all times. We have saved the food until last as this was definitely our highlight due to the high end quality , we both loved it

Recommended by a friend who lives locally. Very warm professional welcome on arrival. Called before we arrived to see if we wanted to book for dinner. We had Room 26 at the top which was massive! It was very clean, very comfortable, warm, nice blend of modern with character and some great in room touches (tea, coffee, bottled water in reusable water bottle, fruit and some biscuits and flapjacks too!) Kettle, TV and stereo. I professionally environmentally audit accommodation, so I spotted a couple of very minor maintenance issues and improvements (e.g. bathroom got very steamy due to extractor fan grate needing cleaning!) which the owners took as feedback with great grace to improve with housekeeping for the next guests. The breakfast was truly amazing, freshly cooked and extremely tasty; with a comfortable and welcoming dining room. You choose the night before by ticking on a menu. Car parking was plentiful. Would we stay again? Without hesitation, and so should you too if you’re in the area! Well done to the Plantation House team, I hope it’s a great year for you all.

We live locally, but had never dined at The Plantation House so thought we’d give it a go. Where do I start? The lady working front of house (sorry, I wish I had asked your name), greeted us, took our coats and escorted us through to the lounge. She could not have been more pleasant or efficient. I used to manage a similar establishment and know the value of such an outstanding staff member. The lounge was sophisticated and elegant but still cosy. We were then shown through to a small restaurant, perfect in size. The food came out at the right speed and was very good. The service throughout was faultless. I look forward to our next visit.

As a long time South Hams resident I can say that this is the best food in the South Hams area. The clientele is older and the atmosphere is subdued, but relaxing as the service is impeccable. Belgium combines with Devon to be quick, attentive and good humoured. If you order a bottle of the house wine in the lounge do ask to see the bottle before they open & pour what they think you want behind the bar. The only tiny blemish in a very enjoyable evening. Richard should appear and take the compliments.

A very warm welcome from the owner, showed to a very comfortable room, 26, at the top of the hotel. The room was very nicely decorated & comfy. We ate in the restaurant for 3 nights, the staff were friendly & so helpful. Couldn’t fault them. The menu changed each night, 5 choices for starter, 3 main course & 4 for dessert. This is a small restaurant so a good choice on the menu. A good selection of wines. If you like whiskey there are dozens to try! A good selection for breakfast, pre ordered so everything is freshly cooked & there is no waste. If you want something that’s not listed they will try & accommodate, for example poached or scrambled eggs. Hope to return as there’s much to do in the area.

What a beautiful, lush, hotel. Very friendly staff, especially the Belgium lady that served us the most delicious breakfast. We stayed for 2 days, 11 of us. My room was large well decorated with a big comfy bed, on suite, with a bath with a shower in it, pleased there was a shower. My sisters room had a walk in shower which would be better for an older person. There are stairs up to the rooms. Stunning garden,& outside sitting area. There is a lounge & bar area & a breakfast & supper area. We did not eat supper here but if it is anything like the breakfast it must be next level. Beautiful art work all around the hotel & the whole place is very tastefully done. We went for a lovely walk across the road next to the river, through the fields. Lovely pubs in Ermington as well.

From the moment arriving at the Plantation House hotel, it was clear that Richard and his team’s attention to detail was first class - the greeting with tea and cake, personal service to access the rooms, bar service, a private dinner for 12, as we’d booked most of the hotel for a wedding nearby, the breakfast etc etc, all attended to personally by Richard and his amazing team. The best way to end this review is that Richard and his team, more than exceeded the website description of his wonderful hotel - you will not be disappointed if you visit and we will definitely be back. Thanks for helping make our weekend very special.

Let me first say that the staff were amazing. Emma greeted us so nicely. and welcomed us in a very relaxed way and showed us our room and asked us to tick the breakfast menu for the following morning. This is a beautiful old style country rectory with a very gracious owner and Chef, called Richard. I travelled with my daughter and we stayed for two nights, B&B plus evening dinner. The room had everything we required and the bed and pillows were very comfortable. Great pressure from the shower and lovely soft robes provided with plenty of fresh towels along with cotton wool wipes etc. On entry to the Rectory to the right there is a drawing room with a mini style bar and extended dining room. Very nice to have a pre dinner drink. The evening menu was good and interesting, 5 or 6 starters to choose from and 3 main courses. I had the medley of fish started which was delicious. Fresh home made bread and butter was also provided. Main course being, leg of duck, Gurnard fish, Rump of lamb. I tried the fish and it was nice but it was the sauce that actually made the dish along with baby potatoes and some veg. my daughter had the leg of duck which she struggled to eat. I would eat breast of duck but not leg. The chocolate dessert/pudding was delicious and the cheese board was very good too. There was a good selection of wines to choose from. We were told that the menu would change the following evening but unfortunately it did not. That was disappointing as we knew what two of the 3 mains dishes tasted like. I queries the type of meat the lamb was and I also queried the type of meat used in the Thai starter the following night and it was rump of lamb and chicken thigh so I went instead for the mushroom dish for starter which was delicious. I tried the rump lamp for main course, it was well presented with a lovely jus along with some veg and latkes/hash brown potato. The Chef did a very good job using cheaper cuts of meat. I had never eaten rump of lamp before. Nothing like the leg of lamb though. Overall, the Chef presented the food very nicely. Breakfast on both mornings was very good and top quality. Lovely white tablecloths with fresh wild flowers. Plenty of choice. Freshly squeezed orange juice blended with berries. Plenty of toast, pot of tea with real tea leaves, coffee pot for my daughter was great. Homemade seville marmalade and strawberry jam. Again the staff serving were fantastic and so accommodating, friendly and nice. Lastly, there were fresh flowers throughout the establishment, which is a very nice touch indeed. (We will excuse the other young guest who came back at 4.45am banging on the front door to get in, who must have woken the entire house up, apparently he was at late night party, his poor young wife eventually let him in. The banging on the front door went on for a considerable time. I thought initially it was an early call for another guest to catch a flight to the airport but I looked out the window and below was the guilty party asking for forgiveness, when she finally let him in. The front door was directly under our window to the front of the house, so we heard everything. He had absolutely no regard for anyone other than himself).
