We chose this hotel for a one night stopover en route to a long weekend on the Northumbrian coast, noting we wouldn't be able to get into our self catering accommodation there until 5pm, so wanting a base to spend a day exploring the Yorkshire Moors. This Inn fitted the bill perfectly - lovely quiet village on the edge of the Moors, with comfortable rooms and lovely food. I liked the fact that on the hotel's own website, you could select your actual room rather than be allocated on arrival. We opted for Pinkers Pond which had lovely light and airy decor. There was a side view to the countryside, although across the car park. There was a basin in the room and then a small ensuite toilet/shower room, which was fine for our purposes. Unfortunately when we arrived just after 2pm to check in (which is the time when rooms are due to be available) we were advised that there had been a hick up with the laundry delivery and so they had not been able to make the bed. We were offered a free drink whilst we waited which we enjoyed out on the seats in front. However the laundry still had not arrived by 4.30pm so when we chased up, we were allowed to leave our luggage and freshen up in the room. We then headed out for a couple of hours to explore and came back thankfully to find the room completed. Not the Inn's fault, but it was frustrating after our long journey.
Dinner was excellent quality - we shared a starter of battered black pudding which was plenty for the 2 of us and surprisingly light in texture, and then Roundy loved his flat iron steak and I had a lovely plate of seafood with some great chips. We sadly didn't have room for dessert! The place was full of diners so obviously has a good reputation.
We were given a form to complete and hand in in the evening, with our breakfast selection, including exactly what we wanted as part of our cooked breakfast. This was then served in the dining room at our agreed time (between 8am and 10am). Excellent cooked breakfast - everything properly hot and good quality. We both commented on our good it was and I cleared my plate which is unusual for me at breakfast time!
Great stay, just a shame about the frustration with the laundry but I'm sure the staff were as frustrated by this as we were, with a queue of people waiting to check in and it being outside of their control!

Spent a lovely peaceful evening at the fauconberg arms on Saturday, good beer, good food and attentive staff.
The room was spotless with a lovely aspect, comfy bed and large bathroom.
On arrival we were shown to our room and left with decanted water and a flask of fresh milk which was lovely, as tea and coffee are always better with proper milk instead of that synthetic stuff that’s probably older than me.
The evening before you are asked to pre order breakfast and confirm a time you would like to eat, this was brilliant as you ordered what you wanted and it kept waiting to a minimal everything was beautifully cooked and served with freshly brewed coffee. (Nothing pre cooked and sitting under heat lamps)
Even though they had a function on it appeared all the staff coped well, with efficient service, both at the bar and from the kitchen.
All in all would highly recommend this place for a pleasant relaxing break where it seemed everyone from travelers to locals are made welcome.

Stopped here for a night not really knowing what we were booking we booked the Garden room which was situated at the very bottom of the garden outside composting toilet and gas shower very different if a little unkept we had to sweep up when we arrived was warm and dry and had what we needed (shower was like warm) price was right.
As for the pub beer was good I had found my self a nice window seat for a few beers but was asked to
Move by the owner as other people wanted to sit there which was if fact her friends only 2 of them which was odd as there was other tables but I moved they apologised to me which was not a problem just a strange thing.
The food was very good could not fault that found staff to be nice a on the ball with service would I go back probably not for a stop over maybe for food if i got the right seat 😂

Thank you for your review - most people don’t realise that the garden room is indeed in the garden unless they visit the website. I’m sorry if there were leaves on the patio - it is situated under a tree so was probably swept in the morning and more had fallen off. Our regulars do request certain tables, which is probably why you were asked to move - I’m sorry if this upset you as it wasn’t intended to! We do have en-suite rooms in the pub if you wanted a bit more comfort and a warmer shower! Annelies

We were greeting with a chaotic reception area with rubbish on the floor. Our room was entitled a superior double room and at £125 for bed and breakfast we were anticipating a real treat. However whilst decor was pleasant the shower over the bath advertised was simply a hand held shower attachment. The brown towels had bleach stains on, the tiny TV could only pick up 2 obscure Channels. We went for a drink in the bar but was asked to move to accommodate a restaurant booking , which is understandable. The snug we were invited to move to did not look very inviting so we decided to return to our room. I decided to take a bath and when I got out I fortunately noticed water in the corner of the room and called my husband who was able to fix the problem before all the water was released and we were able to use the towels to mop up the floor. When we notified the owner as we were booking out we were somewhat nonplussed to be told that all of the plumbing was rubbish due to poor workmanship but surely action should be taken to rectify this if you are providing a service

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. I can only apologise for the messy reception area - we are altering things at the moment so it isn’t as tidy as I could be. However, for the rest I will try and explain my comments. Your room is advertised as having a roll top bath - in my experience they usually only have a hand held shower on them as it’s quite difficult to attach a shower to the ceiling? The towels I have mentioned to my housekeepers and have been replaced. The television channels are somewhat out of my control as the mast that serves our area burned down a couple of months ago as all televisions are affected. I could buy new televisions with free view or subscribe to Sky but after the last year financially it’s not an option at the moment. And finally, I said that the plumbing was bad when I took over - and I have rectified it. The issue you had wasn’t one we’ve had before as the bathroom would have been permanently flooded so I’m at a loss how I could fix something that hadn’t happened before? And finally I’m sorry you didn’t like the snug - most people do find it cosy. Again, I’m sorry your experience was less than satisfactory. Annelies

Being in the hospitality industry ourselves and with all that's going on with the world at the moment we needed a night away.
Booked directly via the website which was easy to do with just a small deposit before arrival.
On arrival social distancing measure were well catered for with plenty of hand sanitizer points around. Clearly this a very popular place and very busy with people eating ( the food that passed us all looked delicious ), all the staff seemed very busy but they were all courteous and very polite.
The room was very clean and comfortable with a good selection of hot drinks with the welcome pack ( the fresh milk was a lovely touch ).
After a great night's sleep it was time for breakfast.
We had filled in a form the previous night for what we would like and we were shown to are table by the owner who immediately made us feel at home.
We both had the cooked breakfast and the quality of the ingredients definitely showed through and set us up for a day exploring perfectly.
It may have been only 45 minutes from home but felt like a world away. We would love to come and stay again in the future and would recommend to all.
I would just like to say thank you to all the staff, not only the ones we met but the whole team that make this establishment what it is.

This hotel is situated in a small village south of Thirsk. My wife and I stayed in a comfortable, decent sized bedroom at the rear of the hotel. Bathroom was fairly small comprising a shower cubicle and toilet, with the wash basin being in the bedroom itself. We had an evening meal there which as very good indeed with a good selection of drinks at a fair price. Breakfast was excellent in a very nice restaurant room. Would have no hesitation in recommending to others.

We spent 2 nights at the Fauconberg with 2 friends and their dog on 11th / 12th September 2021.
We were so impressed by the welcoming atmosphere of the whole team.
Staff were also friendly, engaging us in conversation and bothering to find out about us despite being incredibly busy.
The Fauconberg is well supported by the local community and that always speaks volumes but the fact that the seasoned locals seemed to welcome us too, offering advice on places to visit etc. was wonderful.
The rooms were well appointed, beautifully decorated and furnished and very clean and well equipped. The quirkiness of the ancient plumbing system was well explained by a sticker by the shower and we enjoyed hot showers for a long as needed.
It was great not to see a 5-page menu but a smaller menu with daily specials meaning that food was freshly prepared and delicious.
The food was to a high standard, good portions served piping hot. The steak pie was delicious with proper pastry crust top and bottom. The special Fish Pie was also a real treat.
We also enjoyed an excellent Sunday Roast dinner with plentiful vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and lashings of gravy. No stinting here.
The breakfasts were freshly cooked to order with local ingredients and were delicious.
We are so pleased to have met all at The Fauconberg and enjoyed our chat with Annelies. Your passion for good food and service is evident. Keep on what you are doing as it’s so great!
If ever we are in Yorkshire again we would not hesitate to stay at The Fauconberg and would highly recommend it to others.

We’ve just returned home after such a relaxing 2 night stay in the garden room at the Fauconberg. We were slightly apprehensive after reading the recent review but as soon as we arrived our fears were allayed . Staying in the garden room really gave the best of both worlds- the buzz of a great country pub, serving excellent food and the relaxation and tranquility of a cosy and well equipped wooden room , with balcony and chimnea overlooking the beautiful countryside. The bed was extremely comfy, with crisp, clean linen and the shower and toilet worked really well. The price included an excellent cooked breakfast served by really friendly staff , who could not do enough to help and we will definitely be booking a return trip very soon.

We stayed in the pub after the garden room we had originally booked was double booked, to which we then stayed in one of rooms above the pub, it was clean and comfortable. The pubs exterior is beautiful and set in a lovely village. Unfortunately, one staff member decided to swear in the bar area in an argument about her furlough which was totally unprofessional and the whole bar area, including children heard her language which was foul. The food menu was limited, fried food (scampi, chips, fish) bog standard pub food that is everywhere, they all came with garden peas, so this was a bit of a disappointment as the website makes the food look really good. The staff were polite but missed that usual Yorkshire welcome and warmth.
Not a bad stay overall but at the same time we left feeling a tad disappointed.

I am very disappointed that you experienced a less than perfect welcome and even more concerned about the argument you overheard. Our food menu was simplified when we reopened as I had staff members on furlough so we we’re running at lower staff levels- however, we do have a specials board with fresh fish etc on it. I will be looking into the points you made and can only apologise to you Annelies

Stayed for 2 night and really enjoyed it. Room was of a good size and clean, although the tap in the room was loose. Guests should be more considerate when closing their room doors instead of letting them just bang when closing.
The pub was lovely with a great atmosphere and the staff were very friendly and accomadating. We thought the food was nice and tasty but the portions were on the small size and a tad expensive.
