Traditional village pub with high standards. Unrivalled views of The Ridgway and Uffington White Horse. Local history goes back 3,000 years to the Bronze Age. See the Hill Fort and White Horse on the hill. Remains of a Roman Villa have been found nearby, and the paddock next to the car park shows the distinctive ridges of Saxon Farming. Much more information can be found in Uffington’s Tom Brown’s School Museum, and in Wantage at The Vale and Downland Museum, including local personalities, links to King Alfred and the Anglo-Saxons, and the legend of St George slaying the dragon within sight of here! Ideal base for exploring the region.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

A quiet spot the pub has four new rooms two overlooking the car park (great views of the ridge from here, red kites in the next field...). Our room had a v comfy bed, a small but good wetroom and was exceptionally well equipped with a proper chest of drawers, a hanging cupboard and tea and coffee equipment.

Breakfast the next morning was mixed. Good ingredients in the cooked breakfast (sausage and bacon especially) but it was tepid not even warm which was a shame. Coffee was instant so it would have been five stars but for the breakfast.

Strict adherence to hygiene standards as a result of the covid crisis which was good to see.

Would I stay here again? Yes if I was in the area but I wouldn't go too far out of my way.

The bill was £95. Oh and the beer was good.

The Fox and hounds are taking the Pandemic very seriously.
They made sure the room was clean to the highest standard. They include a break down list of everything that has been done to the rooms before you visit.
I will attach the photo of this to the review.

We booked here for a weekend of walking The Ridgeway and enjoying the stunning landscape of the North Wessex Downs. The staff were friendly and attentive, the room was large, spotlessly clean and well laid out and the pub was charming. Walking in the area is a delight so the pub is really well placed and the view to the White Horse Hill is gorgeous. The breakfast is sourced locally and was very welcomed!

Choose this cosy picturesque pub as a lunchtime venue.
Bit off the beaten track, but a worthy find.
I was attracted to with reasonably priced menu, with a good variety of choices. I was told there is a good choice of ales, I rarely drink (driving).
I was impressed with my Gammon Chump Steak, nicely presented and very tasty, my friends had steak burgers &
Trimmings, and we rounded off with some excellent puddings.
This is a place I recommend, and will use again

Stayed overnight last Saturday and ate in the pub with two other couples.

Evening food and breakfast were of excellent quality and prepared to top restaurant standard. The real ale was superb -'Bonkers Conkers'. Finally the room we stayed in was large, well equipped and the bed super wide and most comfortable :)

The sight of the sun rise over the hill made our trip a real weekend break.

This was our second stay and we will definitely stay again. Thanks to Michael for running a truly fabulous country pub.

Surrounded by stunning countryside and situated in a quaint little village. The rooms are nicely sized and bathrooms are very well planned with good facilities. They are far enough from the pub so that you can't hear any noise but near enough to get there from the bar within 30 seconds. The landlord couldn't be more helpful and waiting staff were exceptional. Can't fault it, great value

A very friendly atmosphere with very comfortable clean and warm rooms and excellent pub food. They have themed nights, pie night, steak night, tapas night and a normal menu. We couldn’t hear any noise from the pub as the rooms are away from the main building. The village is lovely and quiet. Within a couple of minutes walk there is a convenience store and a lovely little play ground for young children is next to a nice little grassed area, good for a dog walk. We also had our dog staying with us and the area is very dog friendly.

Clean rooms and a great bed are a must for me, my wife, and grandson and both rooms met up fully to our expectations.

It's been a year since I've been here and I love the consistency of how clean the rooms are at the Fox & Hounds. Situated on the site of the pub, which has GREAT food, there are four rooms within very close walking distance to the restaurant. There's loads of spaces for your car in the car park.

If you need a retreat, or just a night to stay, this is a wonderful place, in a village that is in the vale of the White Horse.

Overall the food was very average.
I had the roast beef Sunday lunch which was very tasty, hot and good portion size. My other family members had the burger and chips which they described as being very average.
The one thing which really upset us was the length of time we had to wait for our main courses. This was over one hour by the time we finished our starters and the pub wasn’t even that busy. I do expect that due to COVID 19 that everything would be slightly slower but to wait for an hour and ten minutes for your main course is totally unacceptable.
Probably won’t go back, will try another pub next time we are around that area.

Room comfortable and clean but small.
Not terribly welcoming.
We reserved a table for dinner in advance. Checked in at 3pm. At 7pm when we went for dinner we were told the restaurant was closed but they would provide food for us as we were staying. We were given a very restricted menu. Not acceptable. We went elsewhere.
Breakfast was fine but something not quite right here.

Answer from Janet K
Uffington
Hello from The Fox & Hounds! Our least expensive room is Room 2 for Twin or Double Occupancy at £69 per night Room Only. I have been in touch with Evvivo who manage our Web presence in these matters, and they tell me that discounts from OUR room prices are absorbed by the Travel Provider's Commission (which is about 20% plus VAT and fees). If you have found such a deal, good luck! WE have not authorised ANY discounts. I will just have to check our Statement next month from Evvivo. Full English Breakfast is an optional extra (as not all of our Guests want Breakfast).. This is charged at £10 per person per Breakfast, and can be arranged on arrival. I trust this helps! We have our own web site where you may find the pricing options clearer, but I am not allowed to send a link Sorry for the confusion, but not of our making. Kind regards.
