The Metropole Hotel presents a mixed bag of experiences, with some guests praising its spotless rooms and inviting spa, while others lament the outdated decor and occasional maintenance issues. Service quality varies, with reports of both attentive and dismissive staff. While the hotel's cleanliness and ample parking are commended, the atmosphere is often described as nostalgic, lacking contemporary charm. Opinions on value diverge; some visitors feel the hotel is overpriced given the level of service and dated rooms, though there are guests who consider their stay to be a good value.

We stayed for one night, on the way to Cardiff and enjoyed the experience. Llandrindod Wells is an attractive old Victorian spa town, with a number of large hotels and the Metropole is probably the biggest. There is a large car park and public areas are huge and attractive, with original features such as stained glass.

We’d booked a superior room and were disappointed with our ‘free upgrade’ to two small connecting rooms on the first floor, one with a double bunk. However after some kerfuffle at Reception, the friendly and very professional man in charge showed us a much nicer and bigger room on the third floor, which we were happy to take. Later, when one of the radiators turned out not to be working, he quickly arranged for a portable heater to be left in the room.

The room was quiet, well furnished with plenty of storage and the bathroom was large and convenient, with both a bath and a separate shower. Wifi was good and the 40” TV had a good selection of channels (though no Sky News).

Breakfast in the vast dining area was generally good, though the selection was limited. Staff throughout were warm and friendly. The evening before, we ate in the Brasserie, where the food was OK and the service excellent. We’d stay here again.

We turned up in reception yesterday afternoon to enquire about a room and had a very warm welcome. The hotel is well appointed, our room, complete with very spacious shower, was comfortable and the general ambience throughout extremely pleasing. We opted for a well priced three course meal in the restaurant and were very satisfied with the quality of the meal, the size of the portions and the service. When we had a drink in the bar I noticed how carefully tables and chairs were sanitised when customers left. In our room a resume of the cleaning procedures was left on the table. Our stay was short but very enjoyable. It was a treat to stay here and eat in the hotel and I would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

We previously visited the Metropole 6 years ago & decided to visit again after following Justin’s videos during lockdown (of the hotel). The booking process over the phone was easy & we had a special offer for when we stayed of 3 nights for the price of 2 due to a cancellation.
There is a large car park to the rear of the hotel & then a lift to get you upto the ground floor. We then made our way to reception, we checked in which was easy & told where our rooms were (porters were available if required).
I think I had the same room as my previous stay. We then unpacked & then made our to the spa, where we we met & explained where things were the changing facilities were good & clean. The pool was a good size 54’ (not the 54” on the app) even though it was a kidney shape you could get 4 or 5 people swimming in it without too much trouble, we didn’t try out the spa bath, sauna or steam room.
The hotel is getting a bit tired around the edges now & could do with some updates, however this would probably incur some increase in prices, the public areas were fine though.
The Metropole is in a good location to tour mid Wales attractions & coast line, just don’t expect everything to be perfect. The bills were put under our room doors so we could check them prior to checking out which was a nice touch. There are separate reviews for the restaurants.

Just home today from our fourth visit. This time had two superior rooms on the two night Travelzoo gourmet break which included B&B plus a six course evening taster menu and a glass of Prosecco. As we chose a Saturday evening to arrive there was a £30 per room supplement but still amazing value for money. The food was beautifully presented and tasted great. Staff as always, were so attentive and pleasant and despite being really busy on Saturday evening, our six courses were delivered efficiently and timely....the whole meal taking just under two hours. On our second night (Sunday) we opted for the three course menu and the options were great and all very tasty. Far fewer guests Sunday evening but again great service and food.
The spa pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna are a great extra but really wish they didn’t allow very young children in the jacuzzi, sauna and steam room....... one family using these facilities at the same time as us had zero control, or a lack of consideration for others, over their two youngsters (probably 5 and 7 years old) and were happy to let them jump into the pool and jacuzzi, crawl around the sauna and steam room and generally cause other guests inconvenience. In most other hotels we’ve been there is a minimum age of either 12 or 14 to use the facilities other than the pool. That was the only niggle on the Saturday.
Our rooms were great (308 and 236), spacious, clean and well equipped. Really is a splendid hotel and we will certainly be back. Location is ideal for exploring the area around mid Wales.

This was our fourth visit to the Metropole having previously been delighted with what was on offer. We saw our current offer of a two night stay to include B&B and six course tasting menu on both evenings on the Travel Zoo website, and I telephoned the Metropole prior to purchasing the voucher to check whether they could accommodate us for a specific date. The receptionist spoken to suggested I could book directly with the hotel and confirm the reservation at that time with a Master Card payment, at the same price the Travel Zoo were quoting.

I emphasised at the time of booking that my wife was very fussy about the food she likes, but after looking at the spring six course tasting menu on offer there was nothing on this menu she didn’t like. We had this menu on the first evening which we really very much enjoyed and we looked forward to the following evening to repeat the same menu again. Alas however on our arrival to the restaurant on the second evening we were given the standard three course menu to choose from and told our package only included the ‘taster menu’ on the first evening. This menu we felt was a poor alternative which offered limited choice, none of which appealed to us. At the time we reluctantly accepted what we were told that our package didn’t include the taster menu on both evenings. Regrettably we never enjoyed this dining experience and it wasn’t until returning to our room after looking at our confirmation documentation that we had in fact contracted for the taster menu on both evenings.

The following morning at checkout a receptionist asked if we had enjoyed our stay and at this point I mentioned our meal disappointment last evening. She asked if I would like to speak to the Operations Manager Mr Sam Batten about our experience which I agreed to do. Mr Batten confirmed we had the taster menu included on both evenings and suggested this was a ‘learning opportunity’ for the restaurant staff and apologised.

He told me a bottle of wine by way of compensation would be forthcoming with a future reservation and that a superior room would be provided. Big deal !, We have always had a superior room with previous packages anyway. We didn’t need appeasing at this late stage.

We really enjoyed our first evening but a ‘future bottle of wine’ by way of appeasement is quite insulting. We will not be rushing to make a further return visit to the Metropole.

Also bearing in mind that our two day experience cost us almost £250.00.

We have generously awarded the 4**** for the very nice meal we had on our first evening and our superior room was excellent.

We had a lovely 2 night stay here. We decided to splash out and get a tower room which was good as it had a seating area as well as the bedroom part. We had a nice warm welcome at reception and all of the staff were very friendly. The room was spotless and we enjoyed the food. The hotel was well equipped for covid-19 protection, with rooms sealed with a sticker before you check in so you know nobody had been in there since it was cleaned.

We needed a place to stay whilst visiting family in the area and stayed here for 3 nights during a cold, wet February. Friendly reception staff gave us a warm welcome and gave us clear information. Our superior room was on the first floor. We had to use 2 separate elevators to get our baggage up to the room from the ample sized car park but this wasn't a problem. The Victorian era hotel is tastefully decorated. There's a large restaurant as well as a bar which serves food. There are large lounge areas with sofas, tables and chairs. The hotel caters for events and has equipment and facilities. Our room was spacious with a very comfortable, large double bed, table and chairs, desk, closet room and an en suite bathroom with an over-bath shower. The shower worked well and there was plenty of hot water, but the taps were difficult to shut off completely without them dripping. There was a heated towel rail in the bathroom and two radiators in the bedroom. We were cold on our first night. This was because the heating was turned off at the thermostat. After we turned it on we were warmer, but it was a bit disappointing that it wasn't already on when we arrived. The food at this hotel is amazing. A full cooked Welsh breakfast is available every morning with other choices including pastries, fruits and cereals. Dinner menus provide good choices and we were impressed with the quality. Service was a bit slow, however. The head waiter assured us that this was due to unusual circumstances and wasn't normal. The pool is a reasonable size for relaxed swimming. The jacuzzi worked well. We found the sauna to be a little on the cool side. The steam room worked well at off peak times but couldn't retain it's steam very well due to a faulty door seal. This hotel is very well placed for exploring central Wales. We will definitely be staying here again.

Lovely room 324 23&24 July 2021, thoroughly recommend it.
We took our dog who was made to feel very welcome with Matthew the barman offering the dog a treat after we returned from a walk. Nice touch. In fact Matthew was ace during our brief stay, bringing drinks out to the back terrace of the hotel from the bar too.
We ate in the restaurant on both occasions, very tasty. The French onion soup is delicious.
The hotel takes every precaution to ensure covid safety and they do a great job at cleaning the room surfaces and the tables at dinner between people eating. Really nice to see.
The only downside which is nothing to do with the hotel is the amount of people who had joined on Friday from a coach trip. I think they came from a part of the country which did not have social distancing because at breakfast they were too close in the breakfast queue despite the many signs up to keep your distance.
Breakfast as always is first class at the Metropole. I tried to book in again for one night in August but they seem to do a 2 night minimum stay at the moment. Nice hotel, I must try the spa next time.
Parking is great at the hotel too.

Just coming towards the end of 4 night coach holiday here .
The hotel is very impressive from the outside , with a massive car park in the middle of this very small town . Reception , bars and dining room nicely furnished , a little worn but clean . The spa area is excellent , I used the gym and the pool looked great .
The food is very good , plenty of choice and good quality served quickly and efficiently by a helpful friendly team .
There was entertainment put on for three nights - not our preference , but was a welcome distraction as there’s nothing else to do in the evening .
Our room , 431 is a 4th floor ‘attic space ‘ - the only way I can describe it . Whilst clean , it is small with little character . Unfortunately we have been here during a heat wave , although we asked for a fan this did nothing to ease the soaring temperature and sleep was nigh on impossible. The windows are two thirds of the way up the wall and cannot be opened any more than a few inches . However the bed was comfortable with good linens .
The bathroom , although modern with a good shower , is controlled by a light that comes on automatically when you enter . There is no way of stopping this so in the middle of the night the bedroom is flooded with light . Then after you leave the room and shut the door , it stays on for a time then you get about 30 seconds of loud clicks before it turns off - very annoying .
On reflection I wished I’d asked if it was possible to change rooms when we arrived but most people we spoke to complained about the heat in their rooms . We had asked for a quiet room , which I admit we had , however I would recommend that people stay well away from 431 .

We had an overnight stay here recently, breaking our journey from the Wirral down to south Pembrokeshire. The hotel is absolutely huge and full of character - such a refreshing change from the modern characterless chains. It is family owned and clearly an important part of the town and its history. Amazing value - I paid £139 for a tower room (which had a separate seating area) which included breakfast and a 6 course tasting menu for two. Yes the room may have been a little tired here and there, but it was very clean and spacious and the front desk service was excellent, as was the service in the dining room. In all honesty, we'd have enjoyed another night to explore more of the hotel and the spa, plus the surrounding area of course. We would definitely return.

You can choose an early evening time to eat from a 2 hr window starting at 7 pm when you check in to the hotel. If you are eating on more than one evening they will assume unless you tell them otherwise that you want the same time again. It's a lovely hotel with great food.
