Yes, it is more rustic but still very comfortable place to stay. Beds are very comfy, great storage space and a good fan for those hot afternoons. The difference with the more expensive camps is a poorer shower head and a toilet that has no sound proofing whatsoever😊.
It was smart to start the trip at Hyena Pan as the next 2 lodges were more luxurious - best to start with more rustic.
Location of Hyena Pan is great especially due to proximity to elephants. There is a watering hole right in front of the camp.
Hyena Pan is a further drive to see the animals so you have to go out about 30 minutes, but not a problem. They also have a “hide” which was fantastic for seeing elephants, zebras etc. up close. Let your guide know as soon as you get there that you want to go into the hide. He has to book it as it only holds 6 people.
The landscape at Hyena Pan can be described, in places, as post-apocalyptic, due to all the downed trees caused by the elephants. Great to see this area and then go to Chobe area for the next camp – quite a difference. (Chobe gets more rain so it is a different habitat)

Laundry: They do it daily but no “smalls”. The only thing is that this place was not a great one to have laundry done. Clothes come back “rough”. Is this due to the salt content in the water? You notice it when you wash your hair, as well.

Our guide gave us brief “lectures” every day when we went out, which was very helpful. Guides did this at all camps – very knowledgeable.

Dining: Of the 3 camps best food was at Hyena Pan! Dining is not communal, which we thought was good until we went to second camp and realized that we loved the communal dining. One night we were the only 2 at the camp and because that night is always BBQ night they still did the full spread along with singing.

We stayed for three nights and had a wonderful time. Our guide Naku, excuse the spelling, collected us from the airstrip and was with us throughout our stay. We enjoyed a late afternoon game drive on our way to the camp including our first sundowners before reaching the camp as darkness was falling. Our tented accommodation was on a raised platform overlooking the water and was comfortable and clean. The staff sang a lovely welcome song and we were given a brief orientation talk. Everyone was very friendly and the service levels were very good. Lots of staff training was evident. Food was announced by the chef and beautifully presented. Vegetarian choices were available. We had early morning and late afternoon game drives with a good number of species sighted. Wild dogs, Lions, Wild cat and Leopard and many antelope and Elephant. Good bird knowledge shown too. The area is quite wooded so don’t expect plains species in any number. The Hyena didn’t show up but footprints around the tent each morning showed they were about somewhere. Fantastic Elephant encounters from the deck of the camp at several times in the day and evening. Coffee stops, a wonderful bush picnic lunch laid out by the staff, high tea and daily sundowners meant we never went hungry or unrefreshed. We were always met on arrival and escorted to our vehicle on departure. Everyone checked how we were and showed interest in our experiences. The camp wasn’t full and could cope well with more visitors. Overall we couldn’t find any fault. We had hot water bottles for our beds and first thing in the morning and blankets whenever we needed them. It was winter. We did brave the pool mainly for its marvellous setting. No shortage of hot water in the tent.
A perfect camp for including in your safari and a good contrast being on the dry side rather than the wetter delta area and the more commercial Chobi river camps.

On arrival we witnessed a herd of elephants crossing the water. The accomodation at Hyena Pan is situated around a natural (but water fed) pan teaming with wildlife. It is not unusual to sit at dinner witnessing the antics of elephants splashing about just a few metres away. There are twice daily game drives plus other activities. However, the densely shrubbed location of Hyena Pan means that there is a reasonable drive to more open terrain to see some of the wildlife, particularly lions. Don't let that put you off though, there is plenty to see. An elephant appearing seemingly out of nowhere is not unusual. Add to that all kinds of antelope, warthogs, buffalo, birds and reptiles then you realise there is plenty of wildlife everywhere.
The accomodations is comfortable and offers differing views around the pan. The large tents (forget your perceptions about tents - this is luxury!) have comfortable beds and showers. There are no fences so wildlife is everywhere. You will be escorted back to your accommodation after dark for safety. See what footprints you find on the sandy soil as you venture out for breakfast!
The food is excellent, the staff friendly and helpful.

The Sky Beds experience at Hyena Pans was marvelous. Our Sky Beds were on the 3rd level of the structure with a mosquito net covering a very comfortable bed with a deck.
Toilet, wash hand basin etc. next level down.
We enjoyed sundowners overlooking the pan with elephants drinking. The food was delicious and our guide used a laser beam to point out the myriad constellations above us.

We just came home from 12 days in Botswana. The first place we stayed was at Hyena Pan Camp. We were on a safari that specialized watching and learning about elephants however it was far more reaching than just elephants. It was a great place to start our safari. The staff was excellent. All they cared about was our experience, and the guides knowledge on the area are rich; a true education We feel fortunate and are looking forward to going back with our older children
We had people in our party with dietary restrictions. They notify Hyena Camp in advance of their restrictions and they accommodated them seamlessly because of the prior notice

We were exceedingly disappointed in Hyena Pan. The manager of the resort was very rude and disrespectful to our daughter. And took no responsibility for her (the manager’s) behaviour. It completely ruined our stay - and if we could have left, we would have. We felt very uncomfortable. It is certainly not in keeping with our experiences travelling in Botswana. With regards to the camp, the other staff were respectful. The food was good. The game were very sparse - did a lot of driving and did not see much, compared to every other camp we have been in in Botswana. Hyena Pan felt more like an African Resort, rather than an authentic safari camp to us. When I contacted Natural Selection to follow up, I was disappointed with their response. While they said they “took the matter up” with the General Manager, they also said they had extensive contact with Bush Lark Safaris (the group that referred us to Hyena Pan), and when they didn’t hear back from Bush Lark, they “did not pursue the matter further.” Confusing, you would have thought they would have pursued it with me - the customer. We will not return to Hyena Pan or another Natural Selection property. And would not recommend them.

Hyena Pan is a superb camp. With only 10 huts not too big to loose the personal touch. The camp and huts were beautiful and well cared for and the staff were attentive and friendly.

The camp is situated on a waterhole frequented by elephants most of the day with visits from zebra and Kudu.

The safaris were jeep based with no more than 4 people and were mainly in bush/shrub. Plenty of wildlfe to be seen, both large (elephant, zebra, hippo, giraffe) and small, steinbuck, long eared fox, spotted owl, pelican, stalk) and the highlight, leopard.

Our guide, Mario, was friendly and knowledgeable and took very good care of us. Such a special experience.

We had a wonderful safari experience at hyena pan. We saw so many elephants and it was amazing to experience them up close! It was really hot when we were there but the pool was perfect, especially when the elephants came by while we were swimming.

Our guide Shabba was simply the best. He has so much knowledge and he was funny. We really enjoyed our 4 days with him as our guide! Highly recommend Shabba.

The food was delicious and the staff was friendly.

Elephants are our favorite safari animal which is why our travel agent recommended this place and it certainly did not disappoint.

Loved this place! Yes, it’s rustic, but you can’t beat sitting watching the elephants come and go while eating your evening meal. The staff were wonderful, very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. The food is excellent and the entertainment great fun. The guides were knowledgeable and full of information. It is a bit of a drive to the main okavango delta area but that wasn’t a problem, we still saw loads - cheetah, lions on a kill, elephant galore, giraffe, zebra, several different kinds of antelope, hyena, etc.etc. The birds were wonderful too.
I would definitely recommend hyena pan

Hello! We look forward to welcoming you. SkyBeds would need to be booked prior to arrival- as there are only three platforms and May is heading towards peak season we would hate for you to miss out. Please ask your agent or contact us if you have booked directly. You are correct, we have a new underground hide which is situated about 20 minutes from camp, around a waterhole which is great for any photographer (or budding photographer) as the wildlife seem around the pan are phenomenal. I hope that the above is of assistance however if you need anything further please feel free to give us a shout. Regards, Tamryn Natural Selection - Marketing

Dumela and thank you for contacting us. Hyena Pan is situated within the Khwai Private Reserve which boarders the Moremi Game Reserve. The camp is set around a pan, hence the name, where water is pumped during the dryer months. This means its a great spot to watch the elephants and various other wildlife. All tents have recently been completely refurbished and is looking absolutely stunning. As Hyena Pan is situated amongst the mopane tree we unfortunately do not offer any water based activities here. However if you are looking for a water-based camp, might I suggest our sister camp Sable Alley, also situated with the Khwai Private Reserve. The camp is situated around a lagoon (all 12 tents have the most gorgeous views of the lagoon) that is home not only to hippo but is a constant source of water & food for the elephants and other wildlife in the area. Here we are able to offer boating as well as mokoros, along with your game drives and walking safaris (by prior arrangement). Our third property within the reserve, SkyBeds, is a great addition to your stay at any of our camps. As the name suggests, these are no ordinary safari accommodations. Each “room” is actually a three-story raised platform overlooking the wildlife-rich 200,000-hectare reserve. Each SkyBed is illuminated by lanterns at night, and has a fully enclosed bathroom on the first floor with flushing toilets - don't worry your guide is also always near by should you need anything and if I may add offers some of the most breathtaking sunsets. July is a great time to head to Botswana as its dryer which makes for phenomenal game sightings and also means the animals head down to the waterholes. As it is peak season I would advise in booking early in order to secure your tent. I hope that the above is of assistance however if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us. Many thanks, Tamryn Natural Selection - Marketing

Hi, Rosemary! Did you get an answer from Hyena Pan? There is wifi in the common area, but not in your tent. You can use US dollars or Botswana Pula. If you are going to Victoria Falls or anywhere else in Zimbabwe, be sure to bring US dollars in very small ($1 and $5) denominations. You do need an adapter - I got one from amazon, but you can google that to get the right one! I'm sorry for the delay in responding! Anne
