Lebala means 'wide open spaces'. 40 times larger than Manhattan, the Kwando Private Concession sits on a critical elephant migration route and is renowned for consistent predator sightings in the lush reaches of Botswana's northern wetlands. The main area is built on stilts above the fluctuating swamps of the Kwando River and has an unfussy but comfortable, homely atmosphere. Pull up to the bar and help yourself to a drink while watching the weaver birds in the reeds or scanning for lions. One of the largest private wildlife reserves in the world. Kwando Private Concession spans 232,000 ha / 573,300 acres in the far north of Botswana. Lebala has expansive tracts of African grasslands and water fringed floodplains for tracking predators off-road.

We stayed at this lodge for 3 days, there were two game drives each day, starting at 6am. Arriving by bush flight from Kasane we were out hunting for lions soon after we arrived. The game drives were amazing with so much to see and our guide, Richard and tracker, Major were excellent and dedicated to giving us the best experience. The accommodation is perfect for the location with each room a separate cabin surrounded by the African bush. The staff are so caring and helpful, we felt extremely well looked after. The meals are communal, which is great fun, exchanging stories of the game drive experiences with other guests and the food is excellent. You are unlikely to go hungry, breakfast at 5.30am, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea, sundowner and evening meal are all opportunities to eat and drink. Could not recommend this lodge more highly. It was booked for us by Africa Travel Resource (ATR) as part of a safari trip to Botswana.

Beautiful location and friendly staff. The lodge is well run by Mr Shorty (a very tall man!) . The staff is wonderful and there is a ton of game to spot. Special mention for guide Mr G, who was sweet and wonderful and did his best to honour our wishes. Minus points: lack of Wifi and connectivity, as well as the buffet meals, which were really not tasty. Hard fish, cold and tough meat. At this level, with so few guests and the fee charged per night, buffets really do not make sense and make the location feel cheap

Just great! Our guide, Thabo, and tracker, Leo, were terrific from the time that they picked us up from the airstrip until the time we met the Lagoon team at the halfway point. That first afternoon, they offered to take us to camp or start right away on safari. So,someone came in another vehicle to take our luggage. I'm glad we decided to drive because we saw a large leopard (who had a kill in a nearby tree) and, soon after, a hyena who made the leopard (full bellied) relocate from his resting spot . Back at camp after sundowners, we met the camp staff who were all terrific, as well. After dinner, on our way to our tent, 7 lions strolled through camp behind the tents. This is when I knew then that this was going to be an epic safari! The next day, we spent 1 1/2 hours tracking the 2 cheetah brothers. And, by tracking, I mean tracking! We had never seen true tracking before. But, this was to become the normal for most of the guiding team at the Kwando camps. The elephant herds in the Kwando concession are truly amazing! We felt like there were almost as many babies and youngsters as there were adult females. Our second morning, we spent about an hour looking for 2 lionesses with their 5 cubs. We found the females in the brush and parked the vehicle, waiting for the cubs to appear. The 2, slightly older ones, came out first. At one point, these 2 were so curious about the vehicle that they came over and starting sniffing and biting the tires (which we have on video). So cute! One night at sundowner, I was telling Thabo and Leo that our favorite way to have gin and tonic is with cucumber, so the next night, we had cucumber in our G & T. This just shows how well they listen and want to please. The morning of the transfer to Lagoon was action packed, as well. We were driving and Thabo got a radio call from who would be our guide at Lagoon that there were about 4 dogs that they had tracked. So, we were rushing to get there to see them and, almost drove over some older lion cubs lying right next to the road. So, we opted to stay with the cubs whose lazy and full father was babysitting them. We could hear the mother calling in the distance. It was all so good!

We were at Lebala for three nights in November. The room and the camp are lovely and the staff, Barcos, Osee, Patricia and Cathy couldn't have been more helpful. They really made us feel special. When we stayed we were the only guests there and so had the camp to ourselves. That sounds great but it was rather intimidating especially as Kwando has a policy that your driver stays up with you and escorts you to your room at the end of the evening. We really didn't like this as the driver is up giving you a wake up call at 05.00 and so we felt obliged to go to bed early. Dalton our driver was brilliant and his spotter KB excellent. They worked their socks off to try and find us Wild Dogs, which was our main aim. Unfortunately they were not to be found and we must have travelled hundreds of Km looking for them! There had obviously been a lot of fire damaged in this area recently and so game of any description was scarce, hence a main reason for not rating this camp higher.

Loved this camp, it was our first stop on our Botswana holiday to belatedly celebrate my birthday. The rooms are comfortable with amazing views. In February it was still hot at night but sleeping under a damp kikoy shawl provided by the lodge worked a treat. The lodge was very well managed by Barcos and all the staff were so friendly and made us feel at ease immediately especially Patricia, Joanne, Beyonce & Oncey. The food was delicious and different every night. We were so lucky with our wildlife sightings guided by Elvis with his encyclopedic knowledge and tracker Akim with his eagle eye sight. A truly memorable experience. Thankyou

I don't even know where to start. Lebala was the best way to end our spring break trip and it was our 5th and last camp. We had the most wonderful time and in every aspect imaginable, this camp was fantastic.
Starting with the lodge and the accommodations, the family tent was perfect for our family of 5. It was spacious, and very comfortable. A very cute touch was the towel animals they placed on our bed with a welcome note and the nighttime stories left on our pillows. Our kids enjoyed reading the stories before bed. Barcos, the site manager, was so welcoming and we truly felt welcome at the lodge. He truly made the camp so special for our 3 children that they have been begging to return. From the fun activity packets they received, to the wonderful meals, to playing morabaraba with the staff, they had a wonderful time.
The game drives were fantastic and our guide Mayezi and our spotter Akeem were fantastic. They worked well together and we saw so many amazing things. From following a hunting lion, to observing 3 large male lions prowling their territory, to seeing a leopard mom and her newborn cub, the afterbirth of an elephant to an African wild cat and mole rat smiling at us, the game viewing was spectacular. Mayezi and Akeen truly catered to our family - from packing extra snacks for the morning drives, to letting the kids radio their sightings to the camp, pulling out a soccer ball for an impromptu match with elephant dung as the goalposts, to staying after dinner to help them with their activity packets, we cannot say enough about the hospitality we received at this camp. Thank you to the Kwando Safaris Lebala staff for such a memorable stay!!
Also as another example of the wonderful time we had at Lebala, our flight out of Lebala to Kasane was delayed by over 5 hours when the Moremi Air plane wouldn’t start. Our youngest shouted ‘hooray for one more game drive!’ and Mayezi and team quickly regrouped and took us on another game drive. They also went to find us an ant lion to get us closer to seeing the Little Five! Then they brought us back to camp for lunch before bringing us back out til the flight was rescheduled. We were so impressed at the quick thinking and hospitality of the team to welcome us back and fill the time with other activities.

My husband and I traveled 2 weeks in Africa recently and stayed at 3 different safari camps. Kwando Lebala was the second camp we stayed at and, while it was an excellent camp, it was the most dated of the 3 we stayed at. I'm still giving it 5 stars because if we hadn't stayed at 2 others that were better, we would have given it 5 stars. It still would have deserved 5 stars in our opinion because of its prime location for wildlife viewing, which was the focus of our trip. We had tremendous viewings of lions, which was the one species we were hoping to see that we hadn't seen at the first camp, Kwando Kwara. We had the raw experience of witnessing a pride of lions dine on a zebra. What made the experience surreal was that a day earlier we'd all commented how cute the lion cubs were at a watering hole. We also had better viewings of elephants here due to their proliferation and proximity to a river.
The tents at this camp are quite different from those at Kwara - much more like tents (although still a wooden frame). We actually loved the mesh which enclosed the structure, but it took away the feeling of being secluded since we could see our neighbor's tent through the "wall". While the outdoor showers were wonderful and spacious (and very welcome due to the extreme heat wave), they were beside the walkway to tents beyond ours, so there was less feeling of privacy. Like Kwara, there was no A/C, which was only really an issue during afternoon siesta time. We tried going to the communal pool once, but it was very small and buggy - so we cooled off in the outdoor shower and bathtub.
All food and drink is included, which we loved, in theory, but the refrigerator in the communal area was small, operating badly, and saved for traditionally cooled beverages.. Red wine is my preference and is best served room temperature, but room temperature mid-day was 114 F, so I was rather out of luck.

I just finished a 4 night stay in Lebala Camp in August 2024. The staff was amazing. They were always happy and helpful. On one night, the staff sang and danced. You could see from how the staff participated that this was not a chore, but rather a joy to them. The rooms were spacious and the beds excellent. Food was very good and diversified over the 4 nights. Brunch after game drives was also good. Each afternoon at 'high tea' before game drives we always had a nice mix of sweet and savory options. Game viewing was very good, especially for lions.

This is what a safari camp should be! The tents looked out over the plains, lions came right up to camp, large herds of elephant and so much more. The guides work really hard to make sure you see it all and enjoy your experience. The camp staff were attentive and helpful and went out of their way to make sure I had gluten and dairy free options at all meals - including sundowners. I highly recommend this camp (we stayed at 5 camps from different companies on our July 2022 trip and Kwando camps were top of the list.) I would also recommend adding Kwara Camp on after Lebala.

Prior to our week of staying in Kwando Safari camps we were advised to message our friends and relatives to tell them that we would be a week without wi-fi. I told people that I had not died but was just going to heaven for a week. The enforced digital detox has been restorative and regenerative. Heaven has been provided by Kwando and the incredible wildlife and landscape of the Okavango Delta. I wish the creationists and the evolutionists could meet half way and visit this place together. The adaptations and strategies the animals have for survival are incredible. From the collaboration shown by the wild dogs to the importance of the termite in the construction of the whole delta. Barcos and his team at Lebala deliver an incredible experience. Our guide was George with his tracker KB. The bar was raised with every Safari drive. To experience nature in such an intimate and informed manner is truly Kwando’s edge. I am only looking forward to getting back on wifi to post this review then I am happy to go back to heaven, reassuring everyone that I have not died… Don’t miss this place.
