We spent 5 nights at Lua Cheia in December/January. A superb place for true rest and relaxation. Days were spent lounging, reading, swimming when the tide was high, exploring rock pools when it was low and long walks along the beach. A day-trip sailing on a dhow to Barracuni island was a high point. We also had a snorkeling trip...

We visited Lua Cheia with our two children aged 5 and 9. What an amazing place! The camp looks out onto a beautiful beach where the kids explored rock pools when the tide was out. The managers, Andreas and Laura, were really friendly and accommodating and the staff were lovely. Particularly Aly, the chef, who cooked us delicious food during...

Just spent some days in Lua Cheia tented camp. The place is great for those who look for tranquility and still quite unspoiled nature. The staff (thank you again, Tyler, Dhoudi, Omal and Ali) were truely nice. We went for a fantastic trip to a remote Island and had a nice Barbecue there. Also went snorkeling, which was quite nice...

we are just back from Mafia island . we spent our holidays in lua cheia , tent lodge, in northern side of Mafia island, located near a fisherman village, and few minutes far from light house. we were worried because we read the review of peacefreak67..... but since we entered in , we were satisfied of our choice. 1- the...

Mafia island is a little natural jewel that hasn't still been ruined by tourism. Lua Cheia is perfect if you look for a new experience in contact with nature and you do not pretend all the comforts we are used to (no internet and no phone connection). There are only 6 simple bungalows and a little common space where you...

(This review is reposted, because it seems our original review has been removed?!?!?) We stayed at Lua cheia in early August 2010. (Twenty-TEN) The owners have access to an incredibly beautiful venue, and have built a comfortable-enough lodge, but the facilities were poor quality (and continually failing) and the service was honestly terrible. The rates charged for the lodge are...

We got there after having spent 5 days in the south of the Island where it was so windy and cold that we were not able to have a nice swim anywhere. When we arrived we were quite happy not to have any wind on that side of the island but after a couple of hours we discovered some inconvenient...

"As the managers and directors of the company we find this comment very unusual and somewhat confused. First of all the Lua Cheia beach camp is located within a small natural forest that is home to many animals, including bush babies (galagos) and squirrels, both of which look like rats especially after dark. As we are in a forest bush...

I cannot say enough about the lovely Lua Cheia Resort. My fifteen year old daughter and I traveled to Mafia Island after completing a Kilimanjaro climb and felt as though we were in heaven. We are typically a five star travelers and I was a bit apprehensive about staying in a tented community on a rather quiet island. It was...

We were the first guests to split our week between Lua Cheia and Kinasi Lodge, and one of the first to stay at Lua Cheia. We are working in Tanzania as volunteers in education and we needed a complete rest and what we found at Lua Cheia suited us perfectly. It is not a place to expect the luxury and...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Furnished in an Africanised Bali-style, the wooden floors of the bar and restaurant, the antique and dhow-wood furniture and the soft sand under the tent floors at this beach camp, all conspire to give the “barefoot” experience that guests seek to enjoy. There are six large tents under thatched “bandas” with verandas leading directly onto the private beach. The tents are situated in such a way to take advantage of the sea breezes during the hot-season, as well as the marvelous sunsets. The proprietors have worked hard to keep the site as simple and undisturbed as possible while still providing all the necessary comforts. Each tent is equipped with a complete bathroom with solar showers. Energy for the tents is provided by solar panels and wind generation allowing the beach camp to supply guests with 24 hour electricity without the need of a generator. The lights and ceiling fans are also energy efficient. All the water from the showers and sinks supports constructed wetlands, providing controlled nutrition to a variety of plants. The toilets are low-flush, reducing water usage with the resulting waste being filtered into composting units, eliminating the need for septic tanks. The stunning feature of the location is nearly 3 km of private beach stretching away in both directions. The sand is white and pure and one can always swim despite tidal changes. Situated on Mafia Island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania, the complete isolation from any other tourist facility, or commercial activity of any kind, offers guests solitude, nature and complete relaxation. ... more   less
