We (3 people) stayed for 5 days at Riana's Homestay, and we've had an amazing time! Every morning we got a nice breakfast (banana pancake) with coffee or tea. The rooms were quite simple, but nice and cheap, and in front of the rooms you could find a nice, shared balcony. The owner of the homestay can tell you a lot about the history and culture of the Toraja people and of Indonesia in general, which was very valuable and helpful to gain a better understanding of it. We went to a traditional funeral with the owner and did a two day trekking in which we stayed at a very nice place at the top of a mountain. The trekking was quite unique since we walked through all the rice fields. In general, we can say that we had a wonderful stay and we are grateful that the owner shared all his knowledge and thoughts with us.…
Riana homestay is conveniently located, but it's not very well taken care of. You provide your own toiletries, and the shower's freezing cold and doesn't drain. There is a lot of noise so its difficult to sleep there. As a guide, the owner is a very knowledgeable about Torajan culture, but he really doesn't seem to like muslims, because he spends half the time as your guide talking about that. He also doesn't care if you get what you want, just that he gets your money. Make sure to settle prices on paper before you accept his services - the prices will magically increase after you're fully committed. The motorbike rental here is 100K per day, and you have to return it before sundown which is about as bad as deal gets in Indonesia, especially if you want to see a sunset in the mountains. You can rent for better prices outside, but the owner will probably be angry with you and make you uncomfortable and frustrated, which he does well. He is rude and dismissive to guests the second he realizes he will not get any more money from them, and he doesn't care to hide it. I got sick of the attitude and dishonesty of the owner, and left to stay at another homestay. It was cheaper, better taken care of, had a working shower, cheaper rentals, better guide, better suggestions, and the type of warmth and kindness that you find everywhere else in Toraja. Be careful about the owner of Riana, he will tell you whatever you need to hear to convince you there aren't better options, but if you look you'll find better prices, better services, and kinder people across the board.…
The place has is located in the center of the "city" you can reach everything what you need by walking. You can rent a bike for an acceptable price and also go to a funeral with the owner of the hotel. They also offer rooms with hot shower.
Clean place, english speaking owner who is very cautious about foreign tourists. (I have to say that i saw tourist do many bad things, so I wont take that from him) Possible motorbike rent -1 day motorbike rent is not 24 hours like they tought me in school. Owners "day" is when there is sunlight. So i had to pay another day even though i used it only for 2hrs in the very early morning. No negotiation about the price, i was trying to pay half-day even for two hours. But when you need it u have no other option. Too focused on money. Still didnt make me bitter from visiting Toraja. Except of this i had amazing time. 😊😊
I stayed 2 nights with the friendly family. The rooms are clean, fresh towels although no toilet paper but incl breakfast. Good location, highly recommend if you want to explore north and south Toraja. The owner takes time to give you valuable tips and has motorbike for rent.
