Being quite local to Lanchester I didn’t know this wonderful place existed.
It was my husbands birthday and we were going for a meal at a nearby restaurant and rather than taxi backwards and forwards we decided to stay overnight at the Old Post Office.
We were not disappointed. I received a phone call from owner Keith just prior to our arrival. He gave us instructions on parking etc and assured us they were Covid safe.
On our arrival his wife Pauline welcomed us showed us to our room. The room was lovely. A very comfortable room with four poster king size bed, plenty of space in which to relax. Extensive coffee and tea selection with a complimentary box of chocolates and homemade biscuits. A fridge is provided on the landing which fresh milk (so much nicer than UHT milk in my opinion!). There were so many nice little touches in the room.
The en-suite bathroom was very nice with a lovely large shower and really nice toiletries and big fluffy towels and bathrobes.
Breakfast the next morning freshly cooked by Keith was wonderful. Using local ingredients it was cooked to perfection.
All in all we had a perfect stay and Keith and Pauline are perfect hosts. Would highly recommend

My sincere apologies for the late response to you wonderful review Freeman 172. It appears that we had a communication breakdown between Tripadviser and our B&B until recently. Thank you for your detailed and comprehensive review. We hope that you would consider visiting us again in the near future. All the best Keith & Pauline.

This B&B exceeded our expectations on all fronts. Our visit started with a warm welcome; we stayed in a very well equipped and comfortable bedroom and we had an outstanding breakfast.
A great deal of attention was paid by our hosts, Kieth and Pauline, to the fine detail of the accommodation. It included very good tea and coffee making facilities in the room with fresh milk and delicious homemade biscuits; high quality towels and bath robes and a very comfortable bed. The WiFi signal was strong and we could park directly in front of the house.
The breakfast menu included a good choice of dishes with locally sourced ingredients, including home made bread and marmalade. The standard of cooking was high.
The B&B is very well located in the centre of Lanchester close to restaurants and small retail outlets.

The old post office bed and breakfast was really nice, old fashioned and comfortable. Keith and Pauline were wonderful hosts playing attention to the smallest details like fresh milk for teas and coffees in the room, homemade chocolate cup cakes and biscuits! The family room itself was spacious with comfortable king size bed and two single beds. We all enjoyed a good nights sleep. The next morning, Keith made a lovely English breakfast with most of the produce being locally sourced. My daughter who is vegetarian had freshly made porridge and scrambled eggs, again from the hens they keep.
There were plenty of restaurants nearby as well to choose from for dinner and we had superb Italian seafood at Ravello's. Durham is only a short drive away.
All in all, highly recommended to stay at the old post office. We would go again.

My friend and I were cycling the coast to coast on our e-bikes and needed a place to stay for the final leg of our journey. Although a little out of our way, it sounded like it would suit our needs, so we booked. How glad we are!
There is not one element that could be improved about this guest house and is quite possibly the favourite of all the ones I have stayed in, and there have been a few!

Keith was more than helpful when I called to ask if there was somewhere safe to lock our bikes up and ask for evening meal recommendations. He explained about where we could put the bikes and about places to eat. Then booked us in to the fabulous restaurant next door.

Pauline’s touch is clear throughout The room which has two very comfortable twin beds that can be made into a super king size bed. There is a kettle, coffee pod machine with a selection of pods, delicious homemade biscuits and even a box of chocolates! The en-suite had a wonderful selection of high end products that were magic after a gruelling day of cycling on the hottest day of the year! The fresh robe hanging in there was heavenly to sit and relax in too.

Keith’s cooked breakfast was absolutely perfect and set us up for the day as well. You can’t beat a proper free range egg, nicer still to know that they come from Keith and Pauline’s own hens!

There are many more elements that make The Old Post Office fantastic. There will most definitely be a return visit where the local area can be appreciated more fully.

Thank you Keith and Pauline, you are wonderful hosts!

Stayed overnight for my husband's birthday . Pauline and Keith were welcoming and lovely hosts . We were hoping to walk on the Lanchester railway path but the weather stopped us . Our room ( Penny black ) was a comfortable and relaxing haven from the downpour outside! Homemade biscuits , chocolates and a coffee machine were special touches. The breakfast was hot, locally sourced and delicious. We will definitely be back at some point, hopefully in better weather to sit in the beautiful garden

Hello Pauline - many thanks for your extensive review and we are so happy that you enjoyed many aspects of your stay. We had a vision when we first started our B&B to include a homely feel, comfortable beds, extensive room facilities and as much locally sourced produce as we could. It is very heartening that you appreciated and mentioned all of these aspects in your review. Once again many thanks and we hope we can host you again in the future. Keith & Pauline

Very, very occasionally and with luck and a fair wind, you will come across a B&B such as this.
The building is steeped in history, the rooms immaculate and tastefully decorated, the bed linen crisp and fresh, the complimentary refreshments off the scale, the breakfast a thing of legend with no ingredient sourced from more than a mile distant. Oh and the host, a very personable fellow who gives you a warm welcome into his home; thank you for everything Keith.
I’ll be back but next time I’ll be bringing the Memsahib.

This is an excellent B&B with lots of “extras” like coffee machine and selection of coffees, homemade biscuits, torches and earplugs, wine and water glasses and teacups as well as mugs. Very comfortable bed, all spotlessly clean. And an amazing breakfast offering, so much better than many hotels we have stayed in. Cannot recommend highly enough.

The owners have created a comfortable and welcoming bed and breakfast with superb attention to detail. They have managed to effortlessly combine modern conveniences such as a large walk-in shower with traditional decors that reflect the history of the building. The refreshment tray in the room was generous and the selection of drinks, chocolates and home made treats was as good as any 5* hotel I have stayed in. The breakfast selection was comprehensive. The owner sourced several vegan options for me which were cooked to perfection and served at exactly the time I had requested. This is a gem of a place and should I be in the area, I will definitely being staying. Keith, the owner is kind, friendly and genuinely interested in his guests. A big thanks to him for making the stay so lovely.

This place really was a find. We stayed there as we were visiting Beamish which is close. We were so glad that we did. We had a lovely welcome from Keith who was full of information about where to eat etc.
Our room was lovely and very well equipped with a beautiful ensuite and a good range of quality toiletries. The bed was so comfortable that I slept well even on the first night which is most unusual. There is an excellent range of teas, coffees etc. in the room complemented by the most delicious home baked biscuits.
Breakfast was superb! All the produce is locally sourced and if the highest quality. Keith is an excellent cook and presented us with a beautifully cooked full English we had chosen on day one. We could definitely have had this again but wished to try the eggs Benedict on day two. This was equally delicious. To top it all, Keith bakes his own bread made from locally milled flour. It is so good, especially when topped with the local marmalade.
If you like to dine locally for the evening and avoid driving, there is a bar/restaurant next door which is first class. The village boasts quite a few other eateries which are reputedly also very good, but we were more than happy to pop next door and then join in the quiz on day two.
Keith is a brilliant host and we enjoyed our chats about the very interesting life he has had. To sum up, this is an excellent b&b in a beautiful, friendly village.

Hello Doreen - soo many thanks for your fabulous review. We are delighted that you enjoyed so many aspects of what we and the local amenities can offer. We are blessed with a unique and quirky building that although 230 years old could have been designed as a modern day B&B with large spacious rooms. In addition, our village has 4 quality eating establishments within 200 metres of our front door. I do hope we can host you again in the future. Thanks again. Keith & Pauline

I first discovered Lanchester from the saddle of my bike, on the excellent Waskerly Way bicycle path. On this occasion I detoured to my favourite coffee shop, the Serendipity Cafe, just yards from the path. After my coffee and the best Bacon Butty I have ever had, I rode around the center of the village to take a look. It's a lovely place with some good restaurants and accommodation. We were so impressed that we decided to hire a car from Durham City and spend a couple of nights in Lanchester.
Susy our tour guide had found a place called The Old Post Office Bed and Breakfast.
The first bonus was that there was parking right outside the front door, and more at the rear.
Hosts Keith and Pauline invited us into this amazing place. It's big, with a decent sized dining area and a rear yard so big that the property line reaches into forest at the rear. The friendly chooks were happy to supply fresh eggs for the delicious scrambled eggs and smoked salmon that we had. Other options are available such as the sausages and bacon supplied by the local butcher. The coffee was aromatic and delicious. Keith makes his own delicious bread served with local marmalade.
Our bedroom was large with a 4 poster bed and a hot water system that heats up very fast, a bonus after our days out exploring in the chill rain.
Our hosts were friendly and helpful with interesting stories to tell and advice on what to do in the area.
There are many little villages and pubs nearby to explore.
Susan and Cliff the Aussies.

Hello - Our village is just 7 miles from the centre of Durham. We have a regular bus service called the 15 or 15A. The service runs every 30 minutes during the day and hourly after 7.00pm and it takes around 20 minutes. I hope this helps.
