Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I had an unexpected four night stay in the Portaferry Hotel and I simply cannot praise the hotel and all the staff enough. Both Siobhan and Adele, at reception, made me feel so welcome and always made sure I had everything I needed, the young Bistro staff were an absolute credit to the hotel and the chef's breakfasts and dinners were quite exceptional. The Full Irish Breakfast (which they very happily made vegetarian for me) was so delicious and filling I couldn't manage lunches! The rooms were incredibly bright and comfortable and the views, over Strangford Lough, were memorising. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the hotel to anyone looking for food or accommodation in the area.

My husband and I decided to go to the Portferry Hotel for old times sake, as it had been our 50th wedding anniversary day before. On arrival we were not greeted,y husband had to ask for menus. Anyway we decided on 2 starters each as we didn't really fancy any of the mains on lunch menu. I ordered tapenade with breads and farmhouse butter. Firstly the butter was the usual small pats wrapped in gold foil with creamery name on! I really am at a loss to say just how bad the tapenade was, it was vile a very strong vinegar taste, inedible, I have had tapenade many, many times nothing like this. My husbands crispy belly pork, wasn't any better it had gravy all over it to take the crispness out of it, and a very nasty fatty taste ugh!. I am not going to go into the other 2 starters or I'll be here all night. I complained to the waiter who said he would speak to chef. He did not appear back! Very bad I feel and I may add expensive! Will never be back to Portaferry hotel, scandalous they get away with these standards of food. Very ,very poor.

Wonderful hotel, very reasonably priced including food and drink. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Stayed in a small double for 1 night which had everything you need but will stay in a bigger room next time with a lough view. Lovely breakfast cooked to order. Will definitely be back soon.

Went on a recommendation only to be told no walk ins even though it was a monday night and the place wasn't busy after going into the bar and booking online we got a table only to wait for nearly an hour on our main course. Other diners were leaving complaining the wait time was ridiculous. Main course stated buttered greens and on the plate was a few sprigs of asparagus we didn't dare wait for dessert so paid and left only to check the bill to find we had been charged £1 for tap water shocking first time ever. Spoilt a lovely stay in Portaferry probably why it was a ghost town compared to others nearby.

Been coming here for years ... It's been through the mill , and ups and downs with change of owners , mediocre food , silly eating hours , but now it is on the up . Food is excellent , staff are lovely , the whole hotel feels like it's sparkling with enthusiasm . All this and I haven't mentioned it's position next to the Lough .... All the best to all

Stayed here with my partner 11 July, checked into our room at 2-30 , beautiful room overlooking the Lough , dinner at 5-30 absolutely 1st class , sirloin for me , salmon for Claire , lovely bottle of Shiraz, the food was top dollar, ambience great, staff whilst friendly need some in-house training on the finer points of service, having said that a wonderful service, great food & a really enjoyable stay , get the staff trained up a bit more & you are looking at 💯. Will be back .

4 of us called in last Friday night. Absolutely delicious dinner, served by friendly and efficient staff. Spotlessly clean, in a very pleasant setting. Just one thing, which didn’t spoil our evening….not many people in the dining room but we were all put near each other which meant we could overhear their conversation and, I’m sure they ours. Just spread all the diners out a bit when its not too busy!
