We wanted a quick break away and stayed for a Saturday night. It was really enjoyable as the staff were great and the breakfast first class .The hotel was clean and tidy in a great location overlooking the lough We got the ferry to Strangford for an evening meal and returned for the entertainment by a two piece band . A lovely get away a bit of a hidden gem really
You can't eat in the resteraunt after 6 pm .....you can't get any breakfast until 9 pm ...so if you are very keen on an early night ,followed by a long lie ....this then is the place for you .. If you have someone whose conversation is dull then why not enjoy your dinner in the bar with the live music curtails any of that chat nonsense ..... And if you want some of the juicey world famous portavogie prawn cocktail they used to do , you will have to go to portavogie ....
On arrival I was approached by a pushy waitress asking for my food order before I had even sat down. My wife had taken our youngest daughter to the bathroom so I politely declined a food order there and then but instead ordered a bottle of wine and soft drinks for the kids. 10 mins later when the family had picked from the menu we ordered 2 two course meals for my wife and myself and 2 meals from the kids menu. Food came out and still no drinks which was almost half an hour since we had sat done. As we seemed to be invisible to the waiting staff, I had to get up and ask the young waitress laying a table further down the restaurant if she could please check up on our drinks order. She politely smiled, said yes then continued to lay other tables, unbelievable! A few minutes later I approached the pushy lady who first 'greeted' us. We were given the excuse that the computer system had gone down therefore the bar hadn't received our order. On receiving our drinks just as we were finishing our meal we had a tepid apology. The best was yet to come though, when I received the bill they had charged me for an extra main course. Needless to say there was tip left, something I have never done. Now I know it was mothers day but the restaurant was far from capacity busy. During our engagements with the staff we were polite but we were left with a very uneasy feeling. I am a Northern Ireland national while my wife is a lady of colour. Naturally our 2 kids are mixed race. I won't use the R word but observing the rest of the customers in the restaurant we did seem to getting some serious second class treatment. WE WONT BE BACK…
We looked forward to Sunday lunch in reopened hotel. We were very disappointed at standard of food! Mussels cooked in tomatoes and peppers… tasteless without garlic and/or onion. Soup was made from dehydrated soup mix! Main course of beef edible. Sent mussels back but was still charged until objection raised. Waiting staff were pleasant and attentive! A disappointing lunch! Won’t be back.
Staff were friendly and food was beautiful. We stayed in a lough view room. We enjoyed watching the boat going to and coming from strangford. Had a great stay and will definitely be back again. Exploris aquarium within walking distance (1 minute away)
