Magical and relaxing family run hotel. Peaceful location, amazing jasmine scented garden, delicious food (home made), crystal clear sea, interesting and friendly fellow guests, lovely walks to nearby villages and tavernas, well thought out excursions introducing local history and culture, comfortable beds and brilliant showers. Daphne, Iannis, Lina and Christophe have created heaven on earth. Have stayed twice at Votsala since my mum ‘discovered’ the hotel a year ago - History week in September 2023 and Greek Easter 2024. Both weeks were wonderful. Will definitely be back. Only regret is we didn’t find Votsala sooner.

Votsala is Votsala, Not only for“repeaters „ . You go there youre welcome like an old Friend, First Time as well as 6th Time.
No need to accomodate you relax from the 1St minute: Daphne, Iannis, Lina, Christoph and the whole staff do all to make your life easy and chilled. It is just fantastic. The Votsala Team is skilled to senseyour needs, not over exaggerated, they do it just the right way. For us Votsala is…
the view onto the aegean sea
the light Summer breeze
discovering the Island
Meet people from across Europe even from other Continents
Morning Swimming in the Aegean
Meeting nice people (for not nice people don‘ t come to Votsala!!)
enjoying the morning Breakfast (7-11! can you believe that?)
Our advice: try and come to feel the Votsala spirit.

This is probably the most peaceful and lovely place we’ve been to! Excellent and very friendly service. The breakfast is great with a lovely view.
The hotel has such a friendly ambiance and it was nice to talk to the other guest from different countries.
We’ll be back next year.

The Votsala owners and staff are the friendliest of any hotel I've visited, anywhere. Others who have stayed here clearly agree, since it has a large number of regular guests who return each year. The hotel's website is very informative and worth checking out.

The Votsala is the antithesis of flashy nouveau-luxe; the rooms have the feel of simple summer cottages rather than Xanadu by the beach. Rooms are located in three long motel-like structures either two or three storeys high. Each room has a balcony or patio facing the sea. The rooms in the front building and on the third floor of the rear building have the best sea views, though there really isn't such a thing as a bad room at the Votsala.

Breakfasts include home-made savory and sweet dishes that change from one day to the next, as well as sliced meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, bread or toast, jams, etc.; also juice, tea, and coffee (including espresso). Guests serve themselves from the buffet and then sit outside under the olive trees by the shore of the Agean. The setting is peaceful and completely idyllic. The hotel also serves freshly prepared lunches every day and dinner two nights a week--definitely worth signing up for. On other nights, guests can wander over to the harbour, where there are two restaurants next to the water serving a wide range of fresh fish and other typical Greek dishes. (We strongly preferred the restaurant that was closer to the Votsala.) The Votsala has no disco or taverna, but it contains a bar for hotel guests that is very well stocked, and drinks are generous.

In the other direction along the shore, about 1 km south of the Votsala, is a sandy beach with warm water and several bars and restaurants next to the beach. This beach and the bars behind it attract lots of young people starting in the late afternoon (and all day on weekends). The crowd is about 95% local, since tourists are a relatively small minority on this part of the island.

The Votsala staff organize various events, including boat trips and archaeological tours (the hotel is next door to an archaeological site), which are generally worth doing. There's an informal soccer game on the lawn by the shore each evening for anyone who cares to join in. The staff are also extremely knowledgeable about the island and can give you advice on where to go, including lots of places off the beaten track.

Apart from the idyllic setting and fine food, it bears repeating that the people who run the Votsala are the best thing about this hotel. I first visited in 1999, when I was teaching at a summer school nearby, and when I returned this year (6 years after my previous visit) I was greeted like a long lost member of their extended family. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

Mytiline -the capital of Lesbso- is a busy and traffic ridden city with poor air quality - but just 10k away is the town of Pyrgi Thermis and the family run Hotel Votsala. Votsala is on the Agean and the grounds are filled with aromatics - roses and honeysuckle mixed with sea breeze - it is a world away from the city.

Rooms are simple and clean. Owners are very helpful and friendly. They host lots of planned activities - like excursions to nearby caves and archealogical sites - but it is just as nice to lounge in one of the many deck chairs on the small rocky beach or on the hotel grounds.

Menu at Votsala is limited, but a short walk away is a town with a restaurants featuring freshly caught fish from the Agean. btw - Ouzo is a speciality of Lesbos. Have some!

On the minus side - the bathrooms are substandard. They are clean, but quite worn. Owner is presently renovating the bathrooms - ask for a room with a new one.

There can be few more relaxing and laid-back hotels in the World. The Votsala is not grand but it is the place to totally chill out and relax. The facilities are all one needs, the rooms and grounds are well maintained. The team of staff provide wonderful service and the local area is beautiful. The hotel's website tells the absolute truth. If you want a casual and relaxing holiday with out any artifical grandeur or prententiousness this is the place for you.

We were shocked and disappointed that this property consisted of the most basic communist era concrete buildings with old fashioned run-down facilities in the rooms (including linoleum floors). There was no hint of comfort or luxury - the food and bar were basic and overall the experience had all the charm of a stay in a prisoner of war camp. I am surprised at the glowing reports and declarations of return visits - we couldn't wait to leave and checked out after the first day.

Response from Votsala, Owner at Hotel Votsala
Responded 17 Oct 2011
Dear guests from Prague, thank you very much for taking some time to write your opinion about our hotel. Reading your comments I understand that the main reason for making you feel like prisoners for a night in our hotel was the look of the buildings and not their function which aims at giving guests the freedom and independence of entering and exiting their room through our large sea side garden, not obliging them to walk through the reception, carpets and elevators. Your are totally right there is no “luxury” in the hotel. No spa, no swimming pool, no television… If you have a closer look at our website we actually offer more than what we promise. BUT we believe that there is comfort according to our standards: Large and comfortable beds, plenty of sunlight in the rooms, renovated interiors, homemade breakfast by the sound and smell of the Mediterranean, and a very relaxed and informal atmosphere. For all the above reasons indeed more than 60% of our guests are repeaters. By getting older I know now that there is no absolute beauty. The only judge is the time. Therefore I believe that it is important for the history of a place to keep some characteristic buildings of a certain period, giving them the chance to be judged! It would be easy, for me as an architect to fully “modernise” Votsala. On the contrary, respecting the “less is more” principal of Bauhaus -which is similar to our hotel's philosophy- the only exterior change I decided to do was to add, next to the original local stone, one more traditional element: the colourful windows and walls of Lesvos. Many Bauhaus style buildings like Votsala are now protected in “ex-west” Europe. It is very possible that after one or two generations the "communist era concrete buildings" in Prague -that means the East version of Bauhaus- will be also protected! But in between we need to give buildings a chance and not to globalise everything erasing memories and History! Despite your experience at Votsala I hope you felt the very special charm of our island and found the right places on Lesvos to enjoy your holiday (actually there are very nice luxurious hotels on the island!). Best Regards, Iannis Troumbounis Hotel Owner

This was one of the most peaceful places ever. It was just as described in the web site and other review. Fruit trees with fruit for the picking, gorgeous views, beautiful calm water -- no real beach at the hotel but a dock for swimming and boats to take out. We had booked for two nights but stayed for five. Small problem when the usual breeze died for two days and mosquitoes came out -- a little hot and buggy, and plumbing not perfect but these things seemed minor in the context of the rest of the place. Iannis was the most gracious host ever.

This is not a hotel, this is a magic experience that is rare to find…
You should go there alone, ridden of all the baggage, material and immaterial, and rediscover the meaning of life. Happiness is to eat the homemade delicacies for breakfast, outdoors under the olive trees, gazing at the endless Aegean blue and hearing Maria Callas singing. Happiness is to see the Ursa Major and the Milky Way at night like you have never seen them before in your life, away from city lights. Happiness is to swim and the pebbles of the beach are remnants of a Neolithic settlement and an ancient ceramics factory. Happiness is to be drunk with the ethereal light of Mytilene. To walk with Iannis on his thought-provoking tours.
If you are looking for swimming pools, air conditioning, hotel attractions and plastic tourism, don’t go to Votsala. If you want to become a poet, then do.
