Charming, traditional, old world style hotel in a fantastic location. The location is truly the reason to stay: closer to beach for a morning stroll, in shopping (business) district and a downhill walk after dinner if you eat in town! Il Fornaio on site - always my go to prior to covid (happy hour was the best, (great bartenders now and management is stellar) hope Happy Hour returns)…reservations are a must for dinner as is most all of Carmel.

Cons: No lock on bathroom door. Towel rack at toilet, not near shower/tub/sink, marble floors may be slippery when wet. Complimentary breakfast only M-F, only after 8am, very limited and very small. The display food is the size for paying visitors (guest sizes are half what is displayed). No safe in room. Limited on site parking - no guarantee. Hot water is temperamental. Even with covid cleaning, doors are dirty around handles.

Other Pros: The lovely staff and front desk definitely add to the experience and the rates are reasonable. Pine Inn and Tally Ho (newer and across street) are same ownership. On site parking if you check in early.

The room was too hot and stuffy to sleep comfortably despite the outside being in the mid 60s. with the windows open we were only able to cool the room down to a sleepable temp at around 2am. In addition the garbage truck, street sweeper, and recycle is right outside our room every morning at 630am.

Great location though, close to beach and restaurants, very clean, covid conscience.

Good Morning, Thank you for taking the time to write this review. I am truly sorry that your stay was less than desirable. With regard to the heat, Carmel experiences an occasional heat wave, typically once or twice a year. As you are aware, there is no air conditioning at the Pine Inn and in fact, virtually no residence or lodging establishment has air conditioning. We would like to see you again when the weather is more cooperative. John Lloyd General Manager

We had room no. 3 for four people: a spacious, beautifully furnished sun-lit room, on a quiet street, very close to the beach (5 mins. walk), ideally located, close to main restaurants etc. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful, cosy lobby, historical building, free parking (but you must arrive early to have a space there!), good breakfast. The only small point to note: the restaurant was very busy that night and they didn't take the room service order. In sum - strongly recommended!

First off it’s Covid and the city has mandated lockdown of non essential which means all dining is take out only and retail only 20% capacity. I had booked 3 months prior on a whime after eating at Il Fornio which we loved. (restaurant on property) I also loved the age of the property and the charm. I did call ahead to make sure it was still okay to come and was assured it was.

As we arrived on a Sunday at 5:30, she knew who we were before I gave her a name. She says, oh your room is small.. do you want a king bed, it will be an extra $115 a night? I was astonished and humiliated as she showed us the difference in the rooms. There were 4 cars in the parking lot, and she knew us because no one else was checking in! They could not have been at more than 10% capacity. I literally saw one other couple the entire 48 hours we were there. Knowing we would have to eat every meal in our room it felt like extortion- I was not going to be held over a barrel. Having spent years in the hotel industry I never nickel and dimed guests over the size of the bed. Even a nominal upgrade fee would of been more appropriate- or hey it’s a pandemic and there is no one here- here is a king bed! Especially when you take away services like breakfast and daily housekeeping.

I had planned on frequenting the restaurant often and tipping generously. I did not, I took my money to ever other eatery in town.

I had read online about the great breakfast and wasn’t expecting that because of covid but only stumbled upon the coffee and packaged pastries the second morning. There was one random masked attendant looking at us like we shouldn’t be there. He was also so busy that he was sitting the lobby like a guest when we went to check out.

They have signs in the lobby saying no food and drinks which again I thought was covid related, apparently not. They think their faux antiques are too valuable. Being able to sit in the lobby enjoy my paper and coffee shouldn’t be a privilege!

Bottom line, this hotel does not know it’s product. Management is way out of touch with service and hospitality. They work hard at making you feel unwelcome.

Good Afternoon, I am truly sorry that your stay was less than desirable. With regard to the size of the bed/guestroom, the clerk was trying to upsell to a larger room where you would have been more comfortable while eating and relaxing. Just as an FYI - those faux antiques you mentioned are indeed the real thing. John Lloyd General Manager

Full service hotel, including a decent Italian restaurant. Efficient check-in with a friendly staff. The location could not be better — right in the heart of town so there are many nice shops and restaurants just a short walk away. High quality mattress, pillows and sheets. Now for the bad. The biggest problem is that there is virtually no parking. The hotel has a very small lot across the street, but in two days I never saw a single open spot. To park you have to drive around a very crowded area and hope someone pulls out of a spot as you approach. On a Saturday night, I literally drove around for 40 minutes before I found a spot. And that was four blocks from the hotel! Intolerable, and I would not stay here again for that reason alone. The other issue was poor lighting in the room. The light over the bathroom sink did not work. Lamp on one side of the bed likewise did not work. I just expect more from a premium hotel.

Pros: Location is great. Breakfast included is nice. I love the history but bordering on shabby. Parking lot is helpful except when it’s always full. Bed and bed linens were nice.
Cons: The biggest issue was the noise from outside (and inside) beginning at 6:00 a.m. My room was on the north side of the building overlooking the parking lot. There was constant street sweeping, beeping garbage trucks, rolling of garbage cans, power tools, etc. Inside, the pipes were clanging loudly, walls are thin so noises from hallway and other rooms, and there were other noises I couldn’t identify. I was up for the day at 6:00 rather I wanted to be or not.
The room was so small it would not have fit two people, so fortunate that I was alone.
Historic is good but dated is not - especially bathrooms.

This hotel could be called charming or eclectic, but it is not a 4 Star hotel.

We stayed in Room 10 which we highly recommend UNLESS you are a late sleeper and like to have the window open. The trash pickup is right under the window and the loud truck arrive at 6:30 to pick up. I'm an early riser, so that was no problem to me. Large room with great bed and comfortable sofa & chair for reading or watching TV. Fine bathroom - my wife loved the shower. The included breakfast (weekday) was limited but high quality and filling. Good coffee! Convenient included private parking. We'll be back! The walk down to the beach to watch the sunset is good exercise. Everything else is close to hand. Loved the Basis Restaurant.

Rooms are antiquated without modern luxury but comfortable, and you could not choose a better location in downtown Carmel by the Sea. The history and the lobby are amazing! Il Fornaio restaurant and bakery downstairs and lots of restaurants coffee shops and galleries within a couple blocks. You are basically in the center of the main street in town.

I am not typically the kind of person who writes negative reviews since I understand that many unfortunate things can occur which are outside the control of a business owners. However, the “Pine Inn” is by far the worst hotel experience that I have ever had the misfortune of encountering.

My husband and I arrived on his birthday in Carmel and went to check into the “Pine Inn” which we had booked directly through the hotel a little over a month ago. When we arrived everything seemed fine despite one particular grey-haired front desk attendant being quite unprofessional and abrasive with the gentleman who was helping us when my husband inquired about charging the room to a different credit card. Nevertheless, we brushed it off as an awkward exchange between coworkers and walked up the one flight of stairs to our assigned room which was room number 19.

The minute I walked into the room an overwhelming smell of smoke hit me in the face (through my N95 face mask) so I walked over to the windows to open them in an effort to “air out the room.” Unfortunately, this only allowed more smoke to pour into the room as the restaurant’s exhaust fan appeared to be right outside of our widow. Since I am currently in the third trimester of my pregnancy I was concerned what inhaling this amount of smoke the entire weekend would do to my health and the health of my unborn child. My husband and I went back to the front counter to politely ask if we could be moved to a room that would not expose me to a dangerous level of smoke during my pregnancy. The hotel staff informed us that they were unable to move us to another room since they were completely booked but assured us that it would be like we had never been there at all and would process a full refund immediately.

The “Pine Inn” charged over one thousand dollars to my husband’s card which is completely unethical. They should not be charging ANY money for a service which they are unable to provide. This whole experience has been very upsetting by putting my husband and I through an unnecessary amount of stress and inconvenience when we had made these plans over a month prior.

We’ve stayed here for many years and while the charm of the hotel is it’s old-time feel, it definitely shows that there haven’t been any renovations in recent. Could use some new carpet, linens and refreshing of the bathrooms (were dirty when we got there and the bathtub didn’t drain). Some updates would be worth the time and money! Definitely will not be staying here until this is fixed.
