Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Based on reviews I chose a cottage near the back of the property to minimize road noise (it's basically roadside on Highway 1, on the side away from the coast). Despite the name, it's not on or near a shoreline. I was in cottage 7 because I wanted a kitchen. It was very clean and mostly updated aside from heavy sticking old wooden cabinets and drawers in the kitchen. The bed was comfortable, the kitchen had everything I needed to cook meals and there's a couple grocery stores nearby. The hot tub was lovely at night. The place was very near Fort Bragg without being down in it. Everything nearby is a few minutes drive away, but don't expect anything really within walking distance. The heater was a faux-fireplace thing that had only on or off, so it got a bit cold at night once I turned it off to sleep! But the blankets were warm. I'd recommend staying here!

Room Tip: Cottage 7 is far from the road and close to the hot tub.

Our renovated roadside cottage was spacious and comfortable. Dog friendly (for a price). We just stayed overnight but the kitchen and good internet would allow a longer stay to explore the area. There's a nice area outside for a barbecue (but it was raining when we were there). Not a particularly lovely part of town and no view, but I would come back.

The cottages are very private and comfortable. Each cottage has its own carport. I really like the location near the Mendocino Botanical Gardens. I had my choice on the website for your desired cottage, which I picked; but I never got the required email. It was to give the code for entry since there is no formal check-in desk. On the day I was to arrive, I finally had messaged them and got the code but it was not to the cottage I originally chose.

A pleasant surprise as we turned into this neat and well kept motor-court off Hwy 1. The reservation and keys were prepared on the self-checkin office counter, and then the cottage was very clean, nicely appointed with full cottage-kitchen, great bed and beautiful hardwood floors. Each cottage is uniquely appointed with charming touches like linen and china.

We booked 3 nights but had to cancel way in advance. They said of course they will not charge the card. A month later they charged my card for a full 3 day stay plus dog fee anyway. I have called them 3 times to get refunded but they are saying it was a previous owner that fraudulently charged the card and are not helping me to get refunded.

This was part of a 2 road trip from Southern California to Portland, We stayed at 3,4,and 5 star hotels THis is a 3 star. But it was clean , had a well stocked kitchen area and great towels, The price reflected the star rating. It is very dog friendly and close to the beach--but there is no sea side view and the most updated part of the cottages is the sign on Hwy 1. The shower nozzle was super high and you had to genuflect to get wet, the toilet ran all night and the towel rack fell off the wall--It is an average hotel , with average prices in a non scenic location

When I booked this room I was told there was a mini stove and a hot plate, yet we had neither. The DVD player did not work (we tried many DVD's from their selection)and the TV did not have a clear picture. Our neighbors were very loud. The room was much smaller than it appeared in the photos and did not feel welcoming. Toilet paper rack fell off the wall and shower head was dripping. When we arrived about 2 hours after check-in, the room was not ready. Staff was nice but not masked. We paid way more than our room was worth.

We’ll start off on a positive note—The staff was great in facilitating a way for my wife and I to check in after hours, when the office was already locked up for the night. Now for the not-so-positive…Our stay was for one night in unit 10. Whenever we check in to a different hotel/motel, the very first thing I do is pull back the sheets and check the mattress folds for critters and the sheets for cleanliness and freshness. Everyone should do this every time they check in to a hotel/motel. No critters here, but there were oily stains all over the sheets, along with lots of different human hairs—the linens were NOT fresh and obviously had NOT been changed despite the bed being made up for new guests. As we had checked in long after the office was locked up for the night, we were unable to have the linens changed and the linens we found for the futon weren’t much better, so my wife and I slept on top of the bedspread to minimize our exposure to the dirty sheets. It was a rather cool night and laying on TOP of the bed instead of IN the bed meant that we’d have to turn the heater on to stay warm. After unsuccessfully messing around with the remote control for the only heat source in the room—a gas fireplace—I removed the cover for the controls on the fireplace and discovered that the electronic unit that turns the fireplace on was completely missing! My wife and I spent a sleepless night huddled together for warmth on top of a dirty bed. Our 7am departure the next day meant that the office was still unattended (office is staffed after 8am) so we left without being able to speak to anyone from Shoreline Cottages about these issues. We DID send an email to the address shown on the Shoreline website, for whatever that was worth. SHORELINE: MAKING UP A BED AS IF YOU HAVE WASHED AND CHANGED THE SHEETS WHEN YOU REALLY HAVEN’T IS A BETRAYAL OF A GUEST’S TRUST THAT YOU HAVE THEIR BEST INTERESTS IN MIND. These issues were all the more disappointing in light of all the favorable reviews that prompted us to stay at Shoreline Cottages in the first place.
