Caution: When we stayed there 2nd week of Dec, there was a major construction of an outdoor glass patio in front of their lobby.

When we first arrived, we were dropped by our taxi at the south gate. We got lost carrying our luggage and local resident called the hotel for us and picked us up with their van. Upon arrival, the hotel gave an impression of a barn its massive wooden doors and dirt mounds all over the place encasing the property with 20 ft high walls. When we got inside, the complex looked very new while the lobby looked dark and dingy. The lobby didnt look like a "lobby". It had a desk with a woman and few men hanging around. Nobody spoke english but we spoke basic mandarin. Even english apps using their phone does not make any sense (example; boy happy house eating walking-type of sentence!!) In front the lobby was a major construction that looked like a patio. The hotel itself looked and felt new. The interior of the complex opened up into a large courtyard with 2 storey buildings on the south, west, and east sides. The courtyard had a unfinished fish pond with chinese round alley entrance. The 3-two storey building all had beautiful chinese artisitic hand painted facades and brilliant colors. Everything looked "zen" like EXCEPT the unfinished glass patio? I personally think even when the patio is done, it will look totally out of place from the beautiful grounds of this hotel. I would get rid of the person who thought of that idea.

While the grounds and hotel exterior looked beautiful the interior of the rooms looked mediocre. The bathrooms felt squeezed and the rooms didnt have a safe. The restaurant/breakfast area was at the back and it was not great. It was mostly for chinese clients. The ladies at the kitchen didnt speak english but understood my hand gestures.

I stayed for 4days and i didnt see any other guests during the 3 days. Saw chinese guests during the 4th day since it was weekend. Pingyao in general, was quiet and barely had tourists (understandable since it was -11C). only saw 3 other foreigners during that time and I loved it! hate crowds. the best part is that this location is near the north gate where you buy your all-inclusive ticket to old houses including climbing the ramparts of the ancient wall. The other good part is that it is very quiet.

if your looking for those cute small ancient courtyards, this is not for you. This hotel will give you a lot of space. staff was nice to bring me to the high speed train terminal which was a 50yuan taxi trip.

Dear guest, Please allow us to apologize for any inconvenience it caused during our renovation in previous winter. This property was changed to a new owner - which is me, and was facing some problems of facilities and staff, while I am glad to tell that we'd fixed them. There is a new team with passionate people dedicating on service; our cook makes delicious meal upon your request; we re-decorated the garden - as you can find from the picture, bamboos are growing and turning into green, we dig a small pool with gold-fishes living inside of it; you can choose local tour direct to nearby ancient villages, we bet you will like it. We love this place, it means not only business for us, it is life. We hope you enjoyed some point of this courtyard during the mess period, and we also expect better experience for our future guests. If there is a chance, come again, we will AMAZE you this time!

We rented the Standard Chinese Kang Bedroom and both the room and the bathroom were very spacious and nicely done. Pingyang is very walkable, and so it doesn't matter which part of the walled city you are in. For a very reasonable price, the hotel drove us to the airport when we left town. The breakfast is very skimpy--just eggs and bread and tea. The staff is very nice. There was a large party of lodgers who were quite noisy, but they quieted down at bedtime. We would stay here again.

There are many traditional style hotels in Pingyao. However, I recommend this hotel to westerners. While other hotel I've visited in Pingyao have traditional enclosed house gardens with relatively small space, this hotel has been remodeled from a traditional school of this city. So, it gives you much more spacious garden which can give you more openness and comfort. This hotel was not located at the main street, so you have to walk just a little bit more into the inner part from the street. It prevents loud noises from the main streets and provides calmness. This hotel provides you a pick-up/drop-off service from the station if you call them or send a message to a staff, so you don't need to worry to find this hotel by yourself with a map. Also the location is very close to the south gate of the city where you can buy tickets for city tour. Staffs are very kind (and beautiful). The CEO has a good sense of hosting and various international experience. Their cat is so lovely and friendly to new visitors. When I and my friend were concerned about the next trip route due to our luggage, they were very kind to arrange a taxi for two days to Mian Mountain and Wang Family courtyard with local prices, which was a very nice deal. Due to their kindness, we were able to catch up our next steps without any problem.

This hotel is more like a hostel and I don't recommend it at all. The location maybe great but the rest is not.
The rooms we were offered only had futons and they didn't have beds. It was so uncomfortable we could hardly sleep. The shower has no separation in the bathroom and in a second, you have a swimming pool.
Moreover they told us they didn't accept paying with card when in their website it says clearly that all cards are accepted (they only wanted the cash). Also their English is quite limited and they didn't understand we I told them we wanted a receipt, which I hardly doubt. Don't come here.

Sometimes you want to pay extra for a hotel after long travels. We did so in Pingyao. It is a city worth visiting, and the hotel looks very nice. The emperor slept here for one night more than 100 years ago. And the hotel is still in style.

The room is spacious, the traditional bed fits five people, the bathroom is luxurious with an extra faucet for drinking water.

However, the service was very poor! We had arranged a transfer from the train station (with confirmation), but the hotel failed to pick us up. The bed sheets were not clean! Although we were the only customers in the entire hotel, they did not clean our room after the first night. So no fresh towels (which is not the biggest problem), but also no emptying of the toilet paper basket (which is the bare minimum of service). The breakfast is also not something to look forward to.

We are sorry to be this negative about a hotel. We have travelled in many countries, and are used to different service levels, but this was really disappointing. Especially, considering that there are many other options available in Pingyao at lower costs!
