WELLIES is a unique small hotel only one hour from Tokyo in Karuizawa. Chris, the British owner offer gastro-pub style cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. Most of our rooms have cool functional designs and funky British wallpaper. Spend time on the terrace or garden enjoying the natural surroundings (we are very popular with Birders in the winter), or have a drink at the bar with friends old and new. We are only 10 minutes drive from the JR Karuizawa (Shinkansen) , Outlet shopping, Prince ski resort and Kyu-Karuizawa old town. We are less than 5-minutes from Hoshino area (Harunire Terrace, Tombo No Yu hot spring, Stone Church, Seizon Art Museum and Blestoncourt wedding hotel). We are only 3 minutes drive from Naka-Karuizawa station. Convenient for birding. Eat with us or we can give advice on local restaurants and also the inside track on things to do and see in the area. We are about 7 minutes walk from Naka-Karuizawa station. The whole hotel is NO SMOKING inside.

We where looking for a short family escape from Tokyo especially as no return to the UK this year. Wellies didn’t disappoint! Great British breakfast, great British hospitality and great British beer. Sociable dog and friendly chickens - kids enjoyed the animals. Our room was spacious (easily enough room for two adults and three teenage kids) and the garden setting was very relaxing.

We stayed earlier this week with our two teenage boys. I chose Wellies based on all the great previous reviews and because my husband and sons are fussy eaters and I thought the English meals would be a nice change in the middle of our trip in Japan. Chris suggested we have dinner at Wellies the first night which was fantastic and pleased even the fussiest of eaters. We ended up eating dinner at Wellies all 3 nights of our stays and every night we had something different and delicious. Breakfast was perfect every morning too. The rooms were big, warm and comfortable. We hired bikes one day and even though it was chilly it was a nice flat ride into the old town, maybe 15-20 minutes on electric bikes. You could ride to the prince outlet stores in about the same amount of time, or do both. Or Chris will drop you off for a small fee if you’re not up for biking. We went to the prince snow resort one day and Chris dropped us there and picked us up when we were ready. The personal service at Wellies is what sets this place apart. We felt like we were staying with family or old friends. Our boys loved playing darts and we played some board games and cards in the relaxed, cosy lounge. Was so nice to have this space to relax and not be confined to a tiny hotel room. I would definitely recommend Wellies to anyone looking for a relaxed, personal stay. Thanks again Chris & the rest of team Wellies!

Thank you so much. Sorry for the late reply. Thnak you for eating with us all 3 nights. Glad you enjoyed it. I remember we had a Vegemite v Marmite taste off, with both of us supporting our national yeast spread - but it was a draw in the end - they are the same! Best regards, Chris

My friends and I stayed in Hotel Wellies this May for one night. The rooms are so comfortable and we love the English breakfast so much! The owner Chris is very helpful and such a nice English gentleman. He gave us really practical advice for our short stay in Kazuizawa. He is an expert of Karuizawa indeed. He knew everything in this region. The Italian restaurant he recommended was so good! I wish I could have stayed longer in Hotel Wellies! Oh and my friends’ daughters had a great time with Freddy😬 I’ve stayed in other luxurious resorts in Karuizawa before. But if I go back to Karuizawa again, I will definitely stay there! Highly recommend!

We stayed at Hotel Wellies in late July. In short, we had an amazing time. Chris, Judy and the Hotel Wellies staff made us feel welcome and amongst friends. We stayed for two nights. The room was clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated. Our room had a flower feature wall. I am curious about what the other rooms looked like! Breakfast and dinner are served from the dining area on the ground floor. We had dinner at the restaurant one night, consisting of more traditional British fare (bangers and mash). Definitely give it a go! There is also a small bar and lounge area, with a nice selection of drinks. There were some interesting house cocktails and craft beers on offer. Hotel Wellies is a short walk from Naka Karuizawa, one stop from the JR Karuizawa station. Hotel staff (Judy) drove us to the station.
