Very photogenic ancient castle from the outside and the present owner has to be commended for saving this historic castle from dereliction . It is a castle of two halves, one half is habitable and the other is open for public tours . The habitable half houses the current owner and rooms for rent to stay overnight in.
The half open for the castle tour is very eccentric. The structure of the building has been made watertight and and some restoration work carried out. The tour is like walking around a medieval junk shop. An eclectic mix of ancient curios and not so ancient odd ball what nots. Nothing is really relevant to the castle and is just a bamboozling exhibition of old curiosities collected by the owner who fills any space available with whatever he has in stock. There is no rhyme or reason to the exhibits and nothing makes any sense and you soon realise you are viewing a vast collection of hoarding.
It would be far more interesting if all this hoard was stripped out and left the bare bones of the castle to speak for them self and you could the appreciate the build quality and what a life this building has lived.

We stopped in the guards room, it had a kitchen sitting room bedroom and bathroom all of which is clean and still in keeping with the castle experience high beamed ceilings, log burner and oil heaters to keep you warm (I'm always cold but I just sat nearer to the fire) they had already started the fire for us before we got there and the house keeper was lovely, they provide logs but we took another bag with us I'd advise this in the icy weather which we arrived too on the 9th Dec 22 at 4pm, the courtyard is surrounded by trees and walking areas for you to explore. We didn't see a ghost much to my partners disappointment but not mine, we will definitely go again in the summer. Happy ghostly adventures x

Wow, just returned from our one night stay in the tower and we have enjoyed every minute at the castle! Nikki was fab and managed to get us on the ghost tour which we were so excited for. The ghost tour led by Andy was fantastic- both very spooky and interesting, it really made our night. The tower room itself was spotless and very comfortable, from the moment we arrived until check out, we were made to feel very welcome by all staff. We witnessed a few unexplained things whilst in the tower apartment, such as the hatch above the bathroom closing by itself, the fridge door opening, tapping noises during the night in the bedroom and footsteps. Overall, we had the best time and can’t wait to come back and explore again, thanks for having us!

shambles....

Messy, junk filled rooms full of what feels like carboot sale reject items. 99% of the items have no connection to the Castle or the history whatsoever. The guides were really, really miserable too.

The accommodation we stayed in was mouldy and basic, especially for the price. The service was crap and would not recommend anyone to stay here.

The information you receive via email offer no help as to parking and how to check in. The signage on-site is rubbish amd doesn't cater for any guests stating over night.

The guy who owns it, whome also married his cousin, states he specialises in exquisite furnishings from all over the world. This place is honestly a dump... The house of a wealthy hoarder...

Would not reccomend 0.5 /100

Well it has to be the oddest castle we’ve ever visited. I hate to tell the present owner, but we weren’t really bothered about you, it’s the history of the castle we care about. Chillingham is dirty, messy and is desperate for some money spend! The staff were surly and unfriendly, with the exception of one lovely lady in the drawing room. If you care about rubbish ephemera and want to see every colour supplement on the royal family then this is the castle for you, but we didn’t! And as for the Eton uniform which belonged to the present owner’s son - dear God! In saying that the gardens are lovely but I’d avoid the castle itself. The morbid and we assume money making view of treachery, Murder and ghostly goings on soon palls. It’s interesting that everywhere you look, there are signs saying the castle owners take no responsibility for any frailty of the visitor, if you fall and put your foot in a mantrap or fall down a hole, then tough luck! For God’s sake spend some money on it, get rid of the rubbish and give us something of interest!
I’m saying all this, it’s just our view and there were other people there who obviously loved it. But to us it all came over as a bit of a con.

This castle has been restored with a light touch so you could imagine the original owners had just left. Fascinating historical artefacts, you could spend hours learning about the castle and the history of the area. Quite different to the big castles of Alnwick and Bamburgh but that is why we found it charming. The tea room was cosy with a log fire. The famous cattle need a special booking as they run tours separately from the Castle visit.

Great place for a different few nights away.
Atmospheric, amazing grounds, a hop skip and a jump to holy island, Seahouses, Alnwick and Berwick.
Self catering towels and linens provided basic cooking equipment.

Room Tip: Make a beeline for the cafe whilst it's open. Ground only open during castle opening hours.

We visited the castle March '24 with our granddaughter who was very excited to see the castle but my husband and I felt it was quite expensive to get in considering you were done looking around in 45 minutes. A lot of the castle is out of bounds and it's so dark in some places you can barely see the attractions. There is a route that you gave to follow which leads you directly into the tearooms which are very disappointing. It is table service and we had sat for 15 minutes without being served so we left. Not one of the best castles to visit in Northumberland.

We first stayed in the Grey apartment for our honeymoon 10+ years ago and recently visited again with our two children (staying in the Tower apartment this time)
The whole family love the castle and it's location. It is a wonderful antithesis to the more well known sterile National Trust properties.
What a fantastic place to explore, inside and out. I love the slightly chaotic approach. Life after all is a collection of memories and Sir Humphrey has really excelled here to bring intrigue and enhance the atmosphere. Some fascinating objects on display.
The handwritten notes are a wonderful touch, being full of personality and humour.
There is definitely a presence here, and I would love to go a a proper ghost tour one day. Despite the paranormal, we still felt the castle had a wonderfully homely and peaceful feel on this latest stay. However I do recommend that an overnight stay is definitely not for the faint hearted and easily spooked.
I did explore the Still Room, Courtyard, Dungeon and grounds at dark once I built up the courage.
There is so much wonderful wildlife. We saw pipistrelle and brown long eared bats, a hare, deer, rabbits, and swallows.
There are plenty of walks to explore and the church next door is a must see.
The tearoom was lovely and the food very tasty.
The staff, though thin on the ground, were well humoured and friendly. I have no complaints about their customer service skills.
The children (9 and 11) state that this holiday was their best holiday ever and "better than Disney!" Which is a wonderful testament.
The self catering apartments are very comfortable and with good basic amenities. A little trip out to Morrisons in Alnwick is very convenient for stocking up for the week.
The castle is a wonderful base to explore Northumberland, as long as you don't mind a good drive ( which we love).
In fact it's very close to Alnwick, Bamburgh, and Holy Island for starters. Only about an hour from Beamish, Hadrian's wall etc.
We've even driven up to Edinburgh on a day trip from here.

I'd recommend to anyone who loves history, nature and has a spirit of adventure.

Definitely worth a day visit, I think it is great value for money.
Definitely worth a stay if you're a little "weird" like us.
Definitely worth ensuring the castle has another 900+ years of history ahead of it.

We will be returning again and again for as long as we are able.

What a privilege to be able to stay here.

Thanks for reading.

The Tower apartment was clean, cosy and had everything we needed for a two night stay. The beds were excellent.
Had some paranormal activity on the first night. Rhythmic tapping went on for nearly 2 hours. The door to room with the tiger kept swinging wide open and banging shut. Batteries in phones and tooth brushes drained very quickly.
The ghost tour on second night was very spooky. Door slammed shut violently in chapel.intresting place, odd collection of stuff. All staff very friendly and helpful.
Will audit again this was a birthday treat.
