Stay in the Village and walk everywhere. The Blair House is world famous as the home of Jessica Fletcher, the iconic character played by Angela Landsbury in Murder She Wrote. Closed for five years, Blair House reopened in 2023 after being completely remodeled and has had stellar reviews ever since. With only four guest rooms and in one family’s ownership since 1985, it’s like staying in a friend’s cozy home filled with heirloom antiques. Built in 1888 from old growth Redwood and Douglas Fir, it was described in the Mendocino Beacon as the “finest house on the North Coast.” Blair House is filled with romantic charm, wonderful high ceilings and unique historic details. It cheerfully decorated with botanical prints, wallpapers and antiques. The original first floor double parlor is a voluminous suite. Most rooms have private or half bath. Private and cozy Blair Cottage, with its massive plank floors, was part of the horse barn— it has a quaint kitchenette, and allows for pets. High speed intranet is free, but rooms have books instead televisions. It’s a short walk from Blair House Inn to anywhere in the village and the Headlands Park.

We had a wonderful trip to Mendocino with my 85 yo mother and my daughters. The Blair house felt like a home away from home.
Each room has an interesting and unique design. The place is very clean. It is located right in the town, within walking distance from all the shops and restaurants.

My fiancé and I spent a wonderful weekend at Blair House. Helen was very pleasant and accommodating, even though we arrived late in the evening. The Angela Suite on the first floor is beautifully appointed, with a lovely bathroom and old-fashioned tub. The bedroom and sitting room have a wonderful 1800s vibe that we both found charming and inviting. A bookcase cabinet filled with books and the fresh flowers on the mantel added to the warmth of the room. Although we didn't use it, the first floor kitchen is beautiful, modern and well-equipped. Next visit, we plan to cook our own meals there. The home itself is beautiful on the outside, dating from 1888. The yard is filled with flowers and the location is easy walking distance to shops, restaurants and the beach. Our relaxing stay at Blair House really brought the two of us together and remains our most romantic getaway to date. Highly recommended.

A fan of "Murder She Wrote" will recognize the exterior of the Blair House from the Cabot Cove episodes. The house was historical built in the 1880's; well preserved and maintains many original features and charm of the period; while providing modern comforts and conveniences. I stayed in the quaint, cozy Blair Cottage which at one time was the original barn for the Blair House. The Cottage came equipped with a kitchenette, private bath and fire place. The bed was comfy with downy linens, comforter and lovely quilt duvet. At night I could hear the faint sound of the fog horn in the distance. Blair House Inn is perfectly located within walking distance to Mendocino Headlands, Big River and Mendocino Village restaurants/pubs and shops. Innkeeper, Helen, perfect hostess. Made sure I was comfortable and gave recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing that did not disappoint. Highly recommend for your next trip to the Mendocino Coast.

The "Family" was husband and wife. We discovered Blair House only after our previously favorite main street hotel stuck us in a tiny, dank, and dark room that we refused. Blair House was our next contact and we were so delighted we stayed an extra night. Innkeeper Helen was attentive, friendly, and helpful, besides providing spotless rooms with lofty down beds and pillows, even spotlessly clean windows. This is a perfectly lovely place to spend a night or a week.

We stayed in the cottage of the property and had our small dog with us. The home is in the middle of downtown Mendo and an easy walk to hikes or shopping. The main house was not open due to a remodel. While we weren't able to experience the interior of the house, it was fantastic to be the only visitor! Helen and her dog were wonderful hosts being very available via text and checking in on us.
The cottage has a very plush queen bed, a wood stove (although the small heater was all we needed and used), and a small kitchen. The bathroom has a small shower (I describe it as an Italian sized, like those you might see in Italy) that some might find tight. The kitchen had everything we needed for our short 4 day/3 night visit. The small fridge was packed with all sorts of drinks, a couple of apples, cheese and splits of Husch Sav Blanc wine. The cupboards had crackers, oatmeal packs, tea, coffee, jam and more to snack on. I had tea / breakfast at the small bar area and gazed out the window onto the house and garden area.
If you are looking for a quiet, cozy place, you have a dog and want to be in the middle of downtown Mendocino, this is the place to be!
PRO TIP:
- A lot fo shops and restaurants are closed or close early on Tuesdays. Shop early and if you plan on having dinner out on Tues, make a reservation!

My younger daughter is a huge Murder, She Wrote fan, so we were thrilled to get to stay at The Blair House. Helen was wonderfully welcoming, setting our family up in the two prettiest rooms since we were the only guests there at the time. Helen was very accommodating towards our 11 and 13 year olds. The rooms were gorgeous - we had ocean views from our bed. It was an easy walk to any amenity in Mendocino. Our Blair House stay was the highlight of our California trip.

We've had several wonderful stays at Blair House. It's perfectly located in the heart of Mendocino with quick walking access to the beach, stores and restaurants. The Inn has been well kept and continues to be upgraded while keeping to its original Victorian history.

My boyfriend surprised me for Valentine’s Day and booked the cottage for the night. The house was already booked up. We met Helen, the most warm and friendly hostess/house sitter, who was welcoming and informative. Helen made sure we were warm and recommended a local restaurant for dinner, which also didn’t disappoint. Overall, I loved it and will be staying there again, hopefully in Jessica’s room.

Sorry that you missed Jessica’s on the 14th! It’s a favorite because of the nice view over the town, but the cottage is very private. Please reach out as soon as you think you might want to stay and we will be sure to reserve Jennifer’s. Thanks so much for your kind compliments and your shout out to Helen.

We were delighted with our stay at Blair house. The Victorian house is superb, very well maintained, and our lovely suite was very comfortable. There were bouquets of fresh flowers even in the bathroom!
Helen, our charming hostess, made us feel very welcome and gave us lots of information about Mendocino and the nearby restaurants.
An excellent address, we'll be back!
